Haha, thanks. As mentioned elsewhere today already, even after the set-back of those 40€, I'm still in a spot to buy my own beer at the moment, fortunately. But I'll gladly have a beer with you if I'm ever in Vancouver again! I do like that city a lot, and my uncle has been living there off and on for at least ten years (currently off, though), so who knows.

I'm sitting in a dark smokey room with a watering can over my head, just so I can feel good about myself.

died trying--concerning the $100 bill, you are almost certainly in the clear. at least here in the u.s. atm's only dispense $20 bills, and therefore, all of the bills that get put into it are seen by the machine as $20 bills. they can't tell the difference between one bill they dispense and another. if there's a $100 bill in there, it's almost certainly because a machine operator somehow grabbed one $100 bill (or maybe a whole stack of them! too bad you can't afford to withdraw $20 more and see if it's another $100) and threw it into the stack of $20 bills that were going into the atm. the bank may eventually wonder why they're $80 short, but they'll be lucky to figure out that the $100 bill that they're missing went into the atm instead of wherever it was supposed to go, and they'll DEFINITELY be unable to figure out which of the many many atm customers they had that day ended up with it. so yeah, rejoice! as patti smith says, "free money!"

didn't they jail some guy who kept going back to the auto cashier at home depot when he found out that the $1 change slot got loaded with 20's?  So he'd buy sodas with a 20 and get 18 20's back?  Yeah they put him in jail.

yeah, I think if you just get extra money by mistake, you don't have the requisite mens rea to be charged with theft, although discovering the mistake and failing to return the money could be construed the same way.

Weren't the other two bills died_trying got just the expected regular 20-dollar bills? So it would seem that they didn't systematically load the machine with 100s instead of 20s, anyway.

i'm sorry miles, i hope you get better soon.  i make it a habit of asking every doctors office to send me a copy of my labs.  those would be good to have.  what's ailing you and what were they testing (if you don't mind me asking)

thanks, SWV--I just saw this.  I'm done with the antibiotics (and the UTI, hopefully).  the blood tests were for extreme fatigue I've been having, to the point I fall asleep on subways, can't make it through a normal work day, etc.  they didn't find anything bad in my blood, so I'm going to an allergist next, then back for more bloodwork if necessary.  it's been a bit better this week, though, despite the fact that I caught some stupid virus at work and now have a very charming death rattle thing going on in my lungs (I'm going to make some ginger-lemon tea now).  I should probably switch to the annoyed thread to say I'm sick of being sick.  meh.

you are correct alex

at my bank it's pretty common to get 100's or 50's when you make a large withdrawal. i get em all the time when i take out rent, which is why i'm sorta concerned there would be a system in place to keep track of the big bills.

don't give me something else to worry about i've already spent the day lamenting monday's poor judgment!

ah, well i'm sorry to hear that and i hope you feel better.  i've been trying a lot of weird homemade remedies, or just in general trying to eat healthier to overcome the fatigue/soreness issues i always have.  just yesterday i bought some ginger green tea, so here's to hoping it helps both of us.  let me know how the blood work goes, because i've been having a lot of run around with different antibody tests that never seem to go anywhere, so i'm always keen to hear other peoples experiences (and play armchair physician)  it could be your body is just taking its sweet time to recover from all the illnesses its had.  i don't know how you people in cold climates make it through winter with all the illnesses and the like.

ooooh, man, that shoots my theory all to shit. now i have no idea--they may actually be able to tell that you got an incorrect bill. on the other hand, it could now have more plausibly happened during stocking of the machine, so it seems like the chances are also better that the $100 was really in the $20 bill section.

i guess you should probably be circumspect, but i honestly think that odds are in your favor.

The experiment that I had been thinking of as an unmitigated disaster (70% of the fish escaped) has some cool patterns in the data, after all. Uncertain whether I'm pleased that something good will come of the effort, or pissed that I can't just pitch the whole thing and start on something untainted by the stink of failure.

Please tell me you walked into the lab to find a ladder coming out of the tank and a trail of water leading to an open window.

Greg that is classically funny.

but.

Yesterday I distinctly remember saving a file of this big paper I'm writing that my professor made comments on and now I can't find the copy that I spent all day revising.  I did a document search and it is yielding nothing, I have the two sections so far that weren't revised and I have a copy of his revisions in an email but I really do not want to have to go through and correct and ad info and change things around again.

oh sweet chiba I found it.  I am certain once again.

So, on Monday night it seems that I drunkenly ordered a book that I'd been meaning to read for quite a while (B.Anderson's Imagined Communities.) and it arrived today, thing is I don't really have the time to read it, I was planning to save it for the summer, but beer got in the way of that plan. It's bad enough I'm distracting myself with a little bit of fiction at this point, as I've got enough reading to do for school, but at the same time I wanna read it. It's a tough life.
