I can't get proper dinner cos I'm at school and the dairy just shut as I was going up to it to get 2 minute noodles, so I had to go to a vending machine
. Luckily I got chips that turned out to be pretty perfect; very thin cut, very vinegary and salty, and no weird quasi-reflux which I get from almost every food--often very badly from some kinds of chips--and sometimes from drinking too much water, breathing or thinking about it.
Anyway. When I get home I'll make me a falafel wrap or something good. Or leftover pumpkin soup.
Am I getting completely the wrong picture of Doritos if I think they're chips that somehow have stuff inside them? Ie soy sauce? Am I taking the wrong meaning of the word 'in' in that sentence?
These are the best chips everrrr.

Anne, I believe Doritos are a common or garden flavoured cornchip.
And yes, the lime and pepper uppercuts.... thats what well behaved chips come back as when they die

The original Doritos were nacho cheese flavored tortilla (corn) chips. Then they also made the "cool ranch" variety. When I was a kid, those were the two options. Now there are about 20 flavors it seems, and there's also some new special edition or something.

I am intrigued by the idea of the "Tandoori Sizzler" Doritos apparently available in Canada. Ellaguru or someone else in Canada, I think you should go find and try these. Though it seems to think the Wings/Blue Cheese ones are only there as well, so maybe they are here too.

As long as we're talking Doritos here, I thought I should mention that the other, inferior Collisions flavorway might have some appeal to the old-skool 'ritoheads. The Taco Bell flavorway that was available in the mid-90s in America (I wanna say the last time I ate them was in late '96) is very similar to the Chipotle Ranch found in the Zesty Taco/Chipotle flavorway. It doesn't quite have that mellow sweetness, reminiscent of biting into a fresh bell pepper, but if you're nostalgic, give it a shot.
Speaking of weird flavorways, I remember in fifth or sixth grade, my best friend Usobiaga went to Spain to celebrate Christmas. And he came back with Bacon Doritos... In those days, bacon-flavored snack chips were exclusively for dogs - this was wild stuff. I opened them up on New Year's, and they were Gross! Nowadays, there's all these bacon pringles and such. They still smell just as disgusting as those horrid Doritos tasted.

Given how much I enjoy that stuff, I may want to look into eating dog treats on a regular basis.

They don't sound thaat bad, just not very necessary over here anyway, as we have a fairly good variety of corn chips and regular chips. I will stand by those Uppercuts til the day I die, despite the other disgusting flavours like roast lamb and mint.

If I find some, I'll report. Generally my chips diet consists of either sour cream and onion Pringles, or plain tortilla chips with some combination of sour cream/guacamole/salsa dip, when I'm feeling very ambitious, but I will branch out if I see some Tandoori Sizzlers.
There's a fabulous line in a Princess Superstar song where she's bragging that she "has a man for every brand of Doritos". It pops into my head when Doritos are discussed.

I was ashamed of my familiarity with Doritos, so I figured if I invented some jargon it might look like I was in some kind of club. But I like Greg's version better.

Roast lamb and mint chips? I totally want to try those. I've seen roasted chicken potato chips in Italy (though didn't try them at the time, since my vegetarian friend gave me a look I interpreted as "I will vomit all over you if you even think about those for a minute more), and my friend in Maine tells me they have them there as well.
I'm not one to eat chips too often, but for weird flavors, absolutely.

Yeah, I'm a total fucking sucker that way. Chips and candy: "Oh, a 3 Musketeers bar that has cashews in it! I gotta try that!" And I do, and it's the only 3 Musketeers bar I'll eat for like that entire year. Ah, novelty!
Although for reals, that Tandoori flavor sounds mighty fine.
Hey, you guys ever have dill pickle potato chips? They're kinda hard to find in the US, but a Canadian friend of mine always brings some back from the Frozen North when she's up there.

dill pickle chips: Tasty because salty, but disappointingly lacking in pickleness. Couldn't really distinguish from salt and vinegar.

I could definitely distinguish between the two, but you're right that the flavor (which I really dig!) doesn't exactly taste "pickley". Kind of like how circus peanuts don't really taste like banana, or that German cooch perfume likely doesn't smell anything like actual vagina.
What I really dig are canapés made of kettle-cooked potato chips, slices of pickle, and sharp cheddar.

In my experience, Dill Pickle Chips are not at all hard to find. Maybe it's a Midwestern thing? You want me to send you some, Nog? Because I will do so.
PS "German cooch perfume" FTW

That's quite kind of you, jeb, but I'm sure I'll get by without for now. I don't have quite the same kind of constant craving for them that my Canadian friend does.

All this pickle talk is making me want some fried dill pickles from the pub down the street. Jesus they're so fucking good. Okay, I'm going to go get some now.

Oh, DAMN that would be good. I haven't had fried pickles in forever. Between that and andronicus's recent post, I think there may be an upcoming spate of formerly-green deep-frieds appearing in my kitchen soon.

We have fiddleheads in the markets here about now, and I imagine you might in NYC too. They're rather pricey, but I think I'm going to have buy some and make them before they disappear till next year. Anyway, the point I was going to make is that I bet fried fiddleheads would be delicious.

You should clearly rectify that! (They are little fern things, and only around for a couple of weeks in the spring. And I think they are particularly common in New England, so really, you've no excuse.)

Oh, wait -- I'm looking at the Wikipedia page, and they sound familiar; I think maybe my family had them once or twice? It definitely isn't something I've eaten much of, though. I should indeed rectify!
