Richard Buckner - Impasse

I've got to check out the rest of this guy's catalog. I've loved all three of the albums of his I've heard, Meadow, Dents & Shells, and this one.

Impasse is a great album. And somewhat underrated too in my opinion. Once you're done with that album you should definitely check out Devotion + Doubt which is one of my favourites, it really doesn't get much better than that. Reminds me I need to listen to this again.

I also like his self titled album of demo recordings. Most of them ended up on Devotion + Doubt as proper studio versions but it's nice to hear some of his best songs in completely stripped down versions too. My European copy also has a demo recording of Loaded at the Wrong Door, one of the highlights on Impasse.

Somehow I've managed not to buy his debut album Bloomed yet I'm quite ashamed to admit, it's supposed to be right up there with Devotion + Doubt. Need to change that soon.

Thanks, Bubba. I've heard good things about Devotion + Doubt from other places as well, so I'll fo in that direction next.

i've got all 3 box sets.  the last one is spottier than the other two, but it's 28 discs full of pretty awesome music.

yeah, i've been thinking about buying it, i love 60s soul. i got motown's complete singles of 1966 and then some best of's, but i don't think i've got any from stax. what years does the first box set span?

So I ended up listening to Richard Buckner all day but now I have my favourite Boris McCutcheon playing in the background:

Are you entertaining the thought of going to see him play in Utrecht next Sunday, by any chance? Because I think I might hit up that one - it's an afternoon show, which allows me to go back the same day, so a) no need to spend the night (I really need to make friends in that part of the country at whose place I can crash, I guess), and b) dagretourtje!

And by "think I might", I mean that I just wrote an e-mail to reserve a ticket, because I missed too many things recently because I failed to reserve on time.

Actually I didn't know he was playing in Utrecht too. But yeah, this definitely sounds like a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon and I've never been to that venue yet so I'll see if I can make it. My original plan was to see him a couple of days later in Amsterdam (and probably combine it with the Xiu Xiu gig the day before) but this Utrecht date actually suits me better. I’ll try to reschedule some things and let you know tomorrow!

Well, keep me updated then! The website says it might be selling out fast, so I guess it's a good idea to make up your mind soon (or reserve just in case, maybe). Would certainly be cool to see you there.

Yes Sir, I Will- Crass
I don't know.  I like Crass, as in I like Feeding of the 5000 and Christ, but every time I try to listen to this or Penis Envy or anything else I tend to get annoyed.  This album is an angry poem set to obnoxious noise.  Maybe I'm just not anarchist enough.

Also,

This album is awesome, what'd you think of Shadows of the Sun?

the "the stax story" box is pretty awesome, though i've not seen any others. four discs split loosely by category (i think the categories are like "hits", "party", "sad", and "live" or something, but y'know, they all have that same loose groove going through them), and a nice little booklet with some writing in it.

Califone (Quicksand/Cradlesnakes), which I bought yesterday. My, what an excellent album.
