Life Without Buildings - Any Other City.

Been on my list of things to try for a while now, and finally got around to it. They're pretty good.

Awesome collection of stuff from several of their rare CDRs, tapes, etc. released over the last couple of years and some previously unreleased stuff. I definitely need to start buying some of their regular albums. This is smoky drone-psych rock of its best kind. Really enjoying it. Mastered by James Plotkin and released on No Fun Productions. CD comes in one of those nice LP-style gatefold sleeves with awesome artwork on the inside:

it just hit me: weezer's new single "pork & beans" sounds exactly like a john vanderslice song. time travel is lonely-era. seriously, from the vocals on down to the production style. it's uncanny!

i'm quoting myself for emphasis.
My god, you're right.  That opening guitar line IS "You Were My Fiji."  If Vandy was a bitter man, he'd probably have some legal recourse here.

hmm, shades of "hash pipe"/"shot himself up" by the shods.

except hash pipe is a lot better song and they're really nothing alike except for that generic 3 note guitar riff.

despite the title, i actually like "pork & beans" a lot better than "hash pipe." that song more than any other signaled the end of the weezer-era for me.

that said, 4 or 5 of the songs i've heard from the red album are better than "pork & beans." "troublemaker" in particular is so much fun.

what i heard is that the shods opened up for weezer on a tour and rivers learned the riff from them and then wrote a different song around it. which is pretty much textbook plagiarism. it might not be true, but that's how the story got around on the net.

8 (out of 10) songs did. and i defend myself for downloading them by saying there is no way in hell i would've bought this album without listening to it first. i was under the impression that it was already out. now that i've heard it, and i'm so pleasantly surprised by what i've heard, i'll buy it when it's released.

and i never thought i'd buy another weezer album...

No, the latest Archive batch is something I still have to check out. Can you recommend it? It’s probably going to be my next Religious Knives album I think.

...Actually I was hoping you could... Outside my budget this month, even after selling stuff - I got a sudden rush of needing a decent new stereo, and have been accumulating pieces of it form round the country and world. I still haven't paid for my PSF order last week, I'm waiting on the next pile of stuff up for auction - and it's moving way slower than I thought it would... I thought I was putting up amazing stuff that would go real fast, and it's just sitting there.

and speaking of hate, i'm listening to weezer's make believe right now, for the first time, and jesus, it's just very very terrible. no two ways about it. if nothing else, the red album is a drastic improvement. it's amazing how far the pendulum has swung in the space of a single album.

turns out, the green album sounds halfway decent after listening to make believe.

..."hash pipe" excepted.

Romantica - America

Most boring, non-descript band name and album title ever, but this is a very good Americana album. My little brother tipped me off to this one. Was released last year. It's streaming here. Check out "Drink the Night Away" and "Ixcatan."

The Meters - They All Ask'd for You

ok, when did the meters become silly? fire on the bayou is still a good album and all, but some of the cuts are quite silly, really.

i saw Singer two mondays ago, which was half of US Maple and Rob Lowe (Lichens, not the sex tape actor guy).  another board i visit has a rotating album of the week, and this was the current choice.  i bought the cd years ago and hadn't listened to it in a long time.  certainly not everyone's cup o meat, but it's got its place.

yeah, that's a silly song, but the meters were pretty silly all around...they just didn't always play silly music. i think this song is lots of fun. i've even put it on a mix for my son.

yeah i think it's a fun song too. silliness doesn't have to be bad, just silly.
