I just listened to the entire Om discography, minus a single or two, in one sitting. It was over a bit too soon for my liking. Consequently, I just started over again.

Swati - Small Gods

This is an album that came out last year from which I had a few tracks that I really liked, but I had trouble tracking down the rest of the album. After a very kind fellow from another forum stream-ripped a couple songs for me, I now have the whole thing, and it's very good. She's got a hard-to-describe style. A nice, somewhat gruff voice for a female. Before going the indie-songwriter route, she was a virtuoso trombone player who played in some of the most famous orchestra halls. She's also a very skilled guitar player, as you can tell on the song "Big Bang." Here are a few songs I've YSI'd from her album.

Swati - "Small Gods"

Swati - "Dodge"

Swati - "Big Bang"

Swati - I’m On Fire (Springsteen Cover)

Same.

OT:

Decapitated - The Netation

When I first got this album, I couldn't listen to it all in one sitting, it was simply too blistering. But that was a few years ago: yesterday I put it on again for the first time since just after Vivek passed away, and it hasn't left the CD player since.

Okkyung Lee - Nihm

Or at least, I'm listening to the two songs on her myspace profile ("Sky" and "Tuesday Morning") which sound incredible, beautiful cello compositions and improvisations. Released as part of the Oracles series on Tzadik a couple of years ago. Especially "Sky" makes me want to buy this album immediately.

Other than that I’m listening to the new Bonnie Prince Billy a lot for which I’m developing more and more affection with each listen. Both lyrically and musically “Lie Down in the Light” seems less downhearted than most of his other work. Instead of singing things like “I see a darkness / Why can't I be loved as what I am / etc.”, on this album it’s like he’s trying to say “I still have my problems but at least I have my friends and family and they are all that really matter to me.” So yeah, I think it’s a great album with refreshing lyrical content from him but some people seem to be slightly disappointed by the fact that this recording sounds more like his Greatest Hits album than most of his other albums. I don’t know, I think it works quite alright to be honest.

The Great Outdoors - Spring EP

They're doing 4 EP's this year, one for each season. There're 3 tracks on this one and they're all good. They're available for download at their homepage, www.tgod.ca. Strange thing about this EP is that 2 of the songs are written by a different guy than Adam Nation, the guy who's up to this point pretty much been the sole member of the Great Outdoors. They're good though, so this is good news for the future of the band. Better to have two good songwriters than one I suppose.

Arvo Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel

I think Arvo Pärt's choir music is the most creeping and creepy music there is. It's all about the atmosphere, like the Shining, but death metal and such are more like splatter movies. knaw' mean. But this particular piece isn't choir music though, but there was some on earlier tracks on this albums so I was just thinking about it.

One of my colleagues mentioned this one to me after hearing a presentation of my research proposal, though I forgot why he thought it was relevant. And I have to admit I still haven't come around to checking it out for myself...

Pärt is definitely worth several looks. He was a great love of mine in high school. Possibly the first classical music I listened to actively and repeatedly past the point of familiarity.

The Hold Steady - Sequestered in Memphis

Fantastic song title, fantastic song.

EDIT: And man, then there are those lyrics:

"In barlight, she looked alright
In daylight, she looked desperate.
That's alright I was desperate too,
I'm gettin' pretty sick of this interview."

Fuck yeah.

Disc 1: http://www.datpiff.com/Lil-Wayne-Da-Drought-3---Disc-1-mid4313.html
Disc 2: http://www.datpiff.com/Lil-Wayne-Da-Drought-3---Disc-2-mid4314.html

'Upgrade' and 'Dough is What I Got' (on disc 1) are fucking crazy. Disc 2 is a little slower, but by no means bad.

What would be a good introduction to his work?
