Dan Deacon - Wham City
I nearly cried when I friend told me DD was playing Camp Low Hum late last year as I wasnae gonna make it. it turned out to be a vicious rumour. Sad for them, but good cos I didn't miss it. One day he'll make down here and I'll dance like a fool.

Yeah I would lovvvvve to go to one of his shows. I hear it's an amazing experience live.

There is a mountain of snow
Up past the big glen
We have a castle enclosed
There is a fountain
Out of the fountain flows gold
Into a huge hand
That hand's a held by a bear
Who had a sick band!

i'm listening to "butter queen" by three man army. one of the best songs i discovered due to that decibel article about 50 awesome early-70s proto metal albums. plus the lyrics are hilarious.

Califone (Quicksand/Cradlesnakes), which I bought yesterday. My, what an excellent album.
Yeah, that one's awesome. I have a tough time deciding which is their best album, Roomsound or Quicksand. How awesome is that moment in "Amputation.Horoscope.Honey" when Rutili's voice emerges from the murk like an iron statue out of quicksand with that wonderful chorus "silver harm, sugar hands, drunken hive / amputated years are growing back a new shade"?

Listening to Shake the Sheets in the first time in forever.  Upon hearing 'Walking to Do', I remember reading a review that mentions the execrable use of the interjection 'shebooyah'.  A fellow equipped with the rudiments of geography (or a lyric sheet) would tell you that in fact, Leo is referencing the section of Tokyo called Shibuya (this piece of stupidity brought to you by Pitchfork, of course).  This must have been something I noticed about when the album came out lo those years ago, and still no one has issued a correction, no 'my bad I'm a functionally illiterate ponce'?

Pigs on Ice - National Savage

These guys are far and away one of my favorite Milwaukee bands. Total Birthday Party/Fall-worship, and it's fucking awesome. Listen to this record.

Everytime I read the word 'ponce' I seem to inevitably mistake it for the word 'nonce', which is vernacular for peadophile in england (it can be more widely used to signify just 'sex offender') and that makes me want to ask questions like 'lol wtf, bit harsh calling the guy a peadophile is this some anglo-american crazy mix up?' but then I see. And, uh, yeah

nonce? doesn't nonce just mean "the next little while", as in "for the nonce"? i've never heard of this brit vernacular usage. it's kind of blowing my mind.

'I'm here for the nonce' will only get you odd looks in England.

Or possibly a round of back slapping, a pitchfork, a flaming torch and the leadership of an angry mob if you happen to be hanging out in certain types of bars wearing a certain type of look on your face.

To me, ponce means exactly what they attribute to nonce.  Probably ponce was the original term and American English kept it (like it kept much 18th century English usage) and the slang evolved in British English to nonce.

This is apparently etymology week, as I went on a little literary expedition to determine the movement of the term fustan/fustian from Arabic to English/French/Medieval Latin thence to general Ottoman usage through Greek much later, and finally back to modern Arabic, with a completely altered meaning and different letters.  Fascinating.

Quote from: the fucking oed, aren't you people fucking students after all
nonce, n.1

[Variant (with metanalysis: see N n.) of early Middle English anes (in the phrases to {th}an anes, for {th}en anes), alteration (with adverbial suffix -s: see -S suffix1) of ane (in e.g. to {th}an ane) < Old English anum (in e.g. to {th}am anum for that one thing). Cf.

    I. Phrases with for.

    1. for the nonce

    a. For the particular purpose; on purpose; expressly. Freq. with infinitive or clause expressing the object or purpose. In quot. 1949: for the purpose of teasing or joking; for its own sake. Now Eng. regional (south.) and Sc.

    b. nonce-word n. [one of a number of terms coined by James Murray especially for use in the N.E.D.] a word apparently used only ‘for the nonce’, i.e. on one specific occasion or in one specific text or writer's works.

nonce, n.2

Brit. Criminals' slang.

[Origin unknown. Perh. related to NANCE n. (see quot. 1984 at main sense), or perh. cf. English regional nonse good-for-nothing fellow, recorded in Eng. Dial. Dict. Suppl. from Lincolnshire.]

A sexual deviant; a person convicted of a sexual offence, esp. child abuse.

and lord, andronicus, aren't you a student of languages? i couldn't imagine any situation in the english language that would turn ponce into nonce.

The Real Kids - Better Be Good
"Underappriciated in their time" is a term that gets thrown around a fair bit in this day and age of crate digging and reissues. After VU I can think of few bands more deserving of the term than The Real Kids. I finally have a reissue vinyl copy which makes me very happy.
For those unfamiliar with them, the Real Kids were a late 70's Boston power pop, kinda punky rock band led by John Felice who was in the Modern Lovers before they recorded. Download All Kindsa Girls for evidence of brilliance. Or get the Norton records reissue.

Burd Early - Mind and Mother

Every time I hear this album I'm reminded of the fact that he is actually much better than I give him credit for. Why haven't I bought any of his other albums yet in “all” those years? I've heard that Dirty Three's drummer Jim White plays on his "Falling Feather" EP, so I need to hunt that one down first.

I'm on record as saying that Avatar by the Australian band Season is the best post-rock album ever. I'll stick by that statement, but I think second-best honors have got to go to another defunct band called the Rock of Travolta. In 2003 they released an album called Uluru, and it's ridiculously good. They're heavier than most post-rock bands, and there are even hints of levity in some of their songs. There are no long, boring passages where nothing happens, yet they still maintain a remarkable intensity and dynamism. Entire songs seem to consist of those great moments that other post-rock albums spend 10 minutes building up to. Just incredible stuff. If you don't believe me listen to a few tracks of theirs.

The Original Three - It's Not What Your Thinking
From the strangely overlooked Been Dealt A Losing Hand LP from late last year. Fantastic last song on side one that just keeps going with a sweet organ solo in the second half.

Godspeed You Black Emperor = BBF3
From the Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada ep. Probably my favourite godspeed track, but I haven't listened to them in at least a couple of years. Might have to pull the first album which has maybe my favourite packaging ever. The nice paper sleeve with the band name pressed in, the envelope with the various pieces of paper/art and the penny squashed on the rail tracks. I wish more bands would make opening an album such a little adventure.
