Don't you not like hiphop, though?

RavingLunatic, davy, and coldforge have all expressed their dislike for/disinterest in hip-hop.

I mean, I should let him speak for himself, but with him it's more just disinterest and not outright hostility for everything that isn't sad-bastard indie rock like RL.

i can't get into hip-hop, it's true. but don't i get some culture points back by listening to the hell outta some vintage R&B? i mean, that's practically all i listen to these days. sad-bastard indie rock, in particular, is waaaaaay down on the list.

I don't see how anybody could question Ice-T.  He did a song with Slayer for fuck's sake.  A sick fucking song.

lol'd. i think sad-bastard folkie rock is more accurate though. but hey, he's a raving lunatic right?

and no davy, this isn't about culture, it's about appreciating some def rhymes and ill flows.

Dieblucasdie has accurately assessed my feelings on the matter, and (I believe) RavingLunatic's.

When did disinterest become a synonym for indifference? Not trynna be all usage police, just curious cuz it was one that got my proverbial knuckles rapped a few times when I was younger.

Well, people get confused between "disinterested" and "uninterested", which seems like a reasonable thing to be confused about, since they're both "interested" plus a "not".

English is hard.

That's a good question. The OED says 1889:
Quote
3. Absence of interest, unconcern. (Cf. DISINTERESTED ppl. a.)
1889 MRS. RANDOLPH New Eve I. i. 29 [An expression] of intense disinterest in all earthly things. 1900 Pilot 1 Sept. 283/1 The general reader may, without confessing to a heart of stone, feel a certain disinterest in weather and Mrs. Bouveries, however nice and however ill. 1904 Sat. Rev. 9 Jan. 34 The whole election was a model of quiet disinterest. 1940 Economist 19 Oct. 480/2 Peace may bring back the old disinterest and the old candour in mutual criticism which springs perhaps from friendship but does nothing to advance it. 1962 Guardian 9 Apr. 6/3 The days of service disinterest are over. The RAF has begun to think seriously..about the future of space. 1965 M. MORSE Unattached i. 17 The general reaction..was a mixture of curiosity, disinterest, fear, and embarrassment.

Huh. I dunno why, but I was indoctrinated to the idea of the prime definition being "unbiased in matters of finance" or like "not influenced by personal gain in a matter," and that it was a faux pas to use it synonymously with "indifference."

Oh, that's definitely the case, don't get me wrong. But like most issues of prestige usage, there is a conception on the side of the prescriptivists that the deprecated usage is a very recent development, which is not usually borne out by the literature.

Though—passing up the 'interesting' pun—if you're interested in the origin of the difference, disinterested derives from the earlier, now rare verb disinterest, which meant 'to rid of interest or concern'; one can see the dis-, denoting a removal or a moving away from, in contrast to the more simply negative un-.

What does it have to say on the origins of "Crank Dat Robocop"?

I can tell you that Dat as eye-dialect for 'That' started as Irish rather than African American. And that crank originates from an Anglo-Saxon word for 'to fall in battle'. And that in Robocop, the song 'Show Me Your Spine' by P.T.P. is playing in the club when RoboCop arrests Leon. This song, which features vocals by Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy, was unavailable in any format until October 2004, when it was included on the CD 'Ministry: Side Trax' released by Rykodisc.
