you talked about how frail are influential but they don't even have a wikipedia article and are not mentioned anywhere in the screamo article and they don't have an entry in allmusic guide (i couldn't find it at least). and if i google them plus that album the song was on, your blog is the second site that comes up.

understand, this music is really obscure these days. there are a lot of people who would tell you their band is "hardcore" or "screamo" or whatever the crap, and if you asked them where that style of music came from, they'd either shrug because they don't know, or they'd give you a wildly inaccurate answer and not know they were doing so. at the time frail were around, they played shows in basements more than anything else. they released three vinyl-only 7 inches and one split 7 inch with elements of need, plus three comp tracks. not only no cds, no full-length albums. later, the songs were collected on a cd (minus the comp tracks), but it came out in just as limited a pressing as the 7 inches had, and was in print for MAYBE a year. and all of this happened between 8 and 15 years ago. so of course they're forgotten now. that doesn't mean i'm wrong, it just means that the history is lost, to a great extent. if you brought it up on a post-90s-hardcore message board like http://board.vivalavinyl.org, tons of people would know what you were talking about. hell, here's a thread about them from that message board with about 100 replies. this is serious underground history--basically, my knowledge of these records is equivalent to someone who knew a lot about prewar blues 78s in 1958. that's not to say that there will be an explosion of interest in this genre in a decade, but there may be--after all, look at the huge explosion in interest re: early 80s postpunk and american hardcore. in the early 90s, any article about punk rock acted like there were the 77 english bands, and then nothing until nirvana came along. now they act like the 80s happened but that it all ended after nirvana. maybe in 10-15 years they'll be ready to admit that the 90s happened and were influential and important. but i'm sure when they're doing that, there'll be stuff from right now that happened on a really underground level that will be getting ignored.

god, i hope that long ramble made sense.

oh, and here's a fun guide to people posting in that vivalavinyl thread, by the way:

buzzorhowl = me
the_mean = scott torguson (vocalist, sinker/amber inn)
vegancandy = brendan desmet (vocalist, groundwork)
t_rope = eric (vocalist, frail)
teesa = Teresa Brat (editor of Brat fanzine, leading Louisville-based zine of the 90s)

and actually, there are a few other 90s era personalities in that thread, but it's late and i need to go to bed.

for rockmeamadeus (and anyone else interested, obviously):

Five Poison Idea songs.
-"In My Headache" and "(I Hate) Reggae" are from Pick Your King, their first, 13-song 7" from 1983. Simple, blazing hardcore punk.
-"Deathwish Kids" is from Kings of Punk which came out in '86. On this record their sound had changed to a kinda fusion of hardcore and total motorbike rock.
-"Deep Sleep" and "The Badge" are from 1991's Feel the Darkness. In my opinion this record is Poison Idea honed to perfection.

And of course by this point Pig Champion was this fat and Jerry A was this gross:

Two Surf Nazis Must Die songs
These are both from their one and only 7", Anti-Everything. Parrrrrrrrrrrrty.

This is the first time I've uploaded stuff so if I fucked this up, let me know.

And yes, for anyone who might be wondering, "The Badge" is the song that Pantera covered on the soundtrack to "The Crow". And yes, the Poison Idea version is WAY better.

Haha I've somehow managed to never hear the Pantera version. Might have to get on that right now.

Some of the others might include their guitar tone, bass tone, vocals, lyrics, fanbase, legacy, whammy bar squeals, the songs in general, and anything else I might have forgotten about Pantera.

I think the worst inexcusable (i.e. for the budget involved) drum sound I've heard was on Metallica's St. Anger album, where the snare sounded kind of like someone beating a cheapo Faberware sauce pot filled 1/3rd with water

Certifiably the worst drum sound in a major release ever.

is it true that when recording the guitar riffs, they played the riff once and then looped it?

i don't love everything by pantera, and i think their cover of "the badge" is noticeably inferior, but i will defend "vulgar display", "far beyond driven", and some of the songs on "cowboys from hell". just for the record.

vulgar display is fucking good man, when people start talking about disliking Pantera I start questioning whether or not they are a robot. I am pretty sure robots do not like Pantera.

Pantera was great.  At their best, they took that sort of primate aggression that makes dudes get into fights at bars, all the ugliest parts of testosterone-fueled machismo, and distilled it into musical form.  I love it, but I can also see why some people wouldn't be into it.

i have not heard pantera's version of the badge either but that song fucking rules! say what you will about pantera (not particularly a fan myself) but doing a poison idea cover shows at least some kind of taste.
nice selection there in jest!

when i was in middle school, pantera was the absolute extreme. way to extreme for me. i was listening to bryan adams and bon jovi at the time. i remember one time i let a friend borrow a tape i had of this local hippie band (this friend often wore a metallica concert t-shirt with "don't tread on me!" printed across it). well, he left the tape in his parents' car and it melted. to make up for it, he gave me a copy of vulgar display of power. i took it home, ejected keep the faith, and popped it in the boombox.

 Shocked

i ended up giving it back to him because i was afraid i'd get in trouble if my mom found it.

also, it scared me.

Sorry that this is a long way from hardcore, at least the kind we're talking about here, but it reminded me that when I was 12 I liked Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love' and 'Bedsitter' singles and got given the 'Non-Stop- video by some relative for Christmas. The videos for 'Seedy Films' and 'Sex Dwarf' scared me, and perhaps even scarred me:
