Oh hey, I ordered a copy of Watchmen. Don't expect to hear feedback from me on it, since lately I've been buying books and not actually reading them. It should be here Wednesday.

According to UPS, it was delivered today at 4:18 p.m. to my porch. There is no package anywhere on or near my porch.

I figured out what the problem was. Apparently by "porch" they meant "mailbox".

Also I looked at the other Nite Owl pictures and he's only slightly paunchier.  Really the main problem is the ripped arms.

I read about ten pages. I forgot that comics also sometimes have randomly bolded words. I find this distracting. It's a lot for me to get past, but I do plan to read it.

There were laughs all round when the notion of a Watchmen franchise came up. Apparently, during the course of Watchmen’s long incubation The Comedian’s Vietnam Diary and Rorschach’s Journal were both floated as possibilities by clueless studio execs.

David Bowie was once working on a Watchman musical.

It's supposed to represent emphasis of certain words over others, and sometimes it works, but a lot of times, with crappier writers, the emphasis is totally random and counterintuitive, which really breaks the flow for the reader. That said, you get used to it. By the way, this is actually what milly/guanajuanto is making fun of whenever he randomly emphasizes words in his posts. As I remember, Alan Moore is generally not that bad about it, but then again, that was the 80s, and I'm sure there were comic-industry freakazoids staring over the letterer's shoulder going "You haven't bolded enough words in that speech bubble."

The movie version of Nite Owl looks like a cool, sleek superhero that's maybe a little out of shape.  The comic-book image is both fatter and Jewier, which basically fits with his character better -- he's like someone's uncool dad who's unsuccessfully trying to act like he's a badass.

I know everyone has their pet moments that they hope get translated from the comic version to the movie version, but my greatest hope is that they retain the "Devo" interaction between him and Jupiter.  It's one of the few moments in the whole story that's actually funny, and goes a long way towards making him believable as a character.

I went to a comic book store for the first time in a long time. Long Lost Wonders or something like that, in West Allis. Right next to American Science Surplus. It was a fucking awesome shop. The store was staffed by the biggest fucking dorks ever. There was a lot I wanted to buy, but I didn't have much money, so I just picked up Zero Girl, having been a really big fan of The Maxx (one of my fav comics ever). Anyway, the dude behind the counter (who was not unlike Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys only not quite as excitable) told me he didn't like Sam Keith's later work so much because he "started to have really weird views about women."

What, like that they're people?

Not yet, but maybe soon? No one's really sure wtf Grant Morrison's up to. It's interesting, though.

Morrison's doing a Batman run?  What crazy designer drug is Batman hooked on?

Morrison's been bringing back all these weird one-off out-of-continuity ideas that people messed with for a second and discarded, like Batman's son with Talia Al-Ghul, who is now 13 or so and like a really Machiavellian version of Robin. He and Tim Drake have basically been having territorial squabbles all year. Also, we now have a character called "The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh" showing up, from some random 50s Batman-in-another-universe storyline.
