I can't decide whether or not I'm excited.
It would help if my first class wasn't from 7:00 - 10:00 pm on the same night as my band's next gig. When you're a drummer, showing up at 10:30 don't fly so nice.

are you on the quarter system, davy? classes don't begin here until, i think, the 20th or so, which i certainly appreciate. i'm sitting in my departmental meeting room right now, feet kicked up on the table, reading against an awesome view of the philly skyline. later in the week i'm gonna bring in a few of my R2 dvds that i'd have to play on my laptop, squat in an empty classroom, and watch them projected on a big screen. i've always loved the feel of empty campuses.

Nice. So far, first class: discussion section for Intro to Screenwriting. Instructors (three of them!) seem very nice, organized. TAs are good stuff.

Nope, we have semesters.
I feel you on the empty campuses, though. I live about 200 yards from the UGA campus, and I never take the peace and quiet of holidays, breaks and vacations for granted. Athens in the summer is kick ass.

We don't really use a semester or term system here, students always have one or two classes of either four weeks or eight weeks at a time and then move on to the next one or two classes of either four or eight weeks.
As of today, I'm teaching a four-week class on 'Research and Writing', in which first-year BA students of cultural studies get to write their very first academic essay. In April/May, I'm teaching an 8-week module (also first-years) on 'Style and Modernity', of which I'm not entirely sure what to expect of so far. It does have an art history angle of sorts to it, but then it also takes that notion of 'style' to refer to scientific and economic styles.

I'm teaching the second half of the year-long version of the course I taught in the fall, which is basically an introduction to persuasive writing and speaking and critical reading. I'm only teaching one section this semester, thankfully, and I don't expect to have more than fifteen students register for it. So it should be less nightmarish, I hope.
Taking three seminars, all of which I am excited about, and continuing with Russian.
Classes don't start until the 20th!

my classes don't start until the 25th! I'm a bit nervous because I'm taking on more hours at both of my jobs and I have to go to Hopkins four days a week for my russian class. I'm going to be an awfully busy bee. I'm also taking my first Russian class that is all conversation! It will be a bit of a sink or swim kind of semester for me.

Man, it fucking sucks to be teaching classes with strict can't-miss-a-single-session rules and super-tight deadlines. I'm in the middle of writing an email to a student saying "no, you can't hand in your essays four days late", and while I kind of see the point of it (the group session will be about the students giving each other peer feedback in groups of two, so if she doesn't at least bring in a draft of an essay, the entire thing won't work), I also feel like the worst person in the world right now.

My new classes don't start until the 26th, and damn am I missing classroom action. Although between now and then I have one exam and have to write the last of my six winter break essay's. I'm taking Sociology of Culture, Human Rights and the Global Sex Trade, Researching Culture, Class, Gender and Race in modern society,History of Yugoslavia and Successor States from 1941, Revolution and Political Modernity and Philosophy of Sex. Although I'm merely auditing the last two, so how long I'll last in them before realizing that my work load is getting silly is open to debate.

I was going to say, having taken a class like that last year, and having read some of my class mates essay's, you are in for some painful fucking reading.

Yippee! But then again, even if there's just one Dom-like figure in there, it'll probably make up for it all. The essays have to be somehow connected to the topic of autobiographical memory, so just thinking of the kind of personal anecdotes you might be able to weave into an essay like that...
