is livejournal going to die?
«

all I know is
this
, which a friend linked to elsewhere. I figure there are people here more informed than me, so what's the scoop?
I go back with LJ; started a journal in 2001 and have something of an emotional investment in it because it connected me with friends and lovers over the years. I mostly gave it up in 2005 but recently logged on for the first time in well over a year, only to be a bit distraught by a bunch of pointless interface upgrades that did little but annoy me (though I guess other folks dig twittering on LJ?).
anyway, it seems like it's been in decline at least since the great Harry Potter slashfic purge of '07, but I'd still hate to see it go.

this is how I felt about it, and that was the main motivation for me to just make my own blog. but I do miss the connectedness of LJ. right now my mom and my boyfriend are probably the only people reading my blog. and a lot of spiders. and bots.

weird, this popped up after I had just posted to my LJ for the first time in a month and a half or so. Seems like once you have the infrastructure for that kind of site in place it wouldn't take too much to keep it running, we just probably won't see too many more of those pointless annoying interface upgrades. Without further investment in infrastructure improvement and "shiny thing" type interface improvements, you'll probably get death by attrition, as fewer and fewer people use the service, possibly, but I guess they'll probably still be around for a while anyway.

I never write in my LJ any more and hardly ever check my friends list, which is kind of sad, because I've made a number of really great, lasting friendships thanks to LJ, and I've been on there almost since the beginning--I'm mere months from being an early adopter. I just don't really feel the need for it any more, though, and it seems that most of my friends feel the same, what with MySpace and Facebook and Twitter and all these other things. And I just don't write as much as I used to, or have much interest in it. Maybe I'm just less maudlin these days.

I pretty much just use mine to keep a small group of friends updated. Honestly, it would probably be much-needed motivation to make the switch to Facebook if LJ went down in the near future. I'm really not attached to any of my early twenties angst so LJ can have it.

Maybe you're turning into a suit! Or a waster! It's only to be expected when you get a promotion like every three weeks and own a copy of fallout 3.

What the fuck. I use LJ very regularly to keep up with my friends in other cities and I love A) not having a bunch of fucking clutter, and B) having something I can lock up any way I want, post by post.

On the other hand:
"i hope nothing happens to lj because let's face it, it is an awesome way to connect to people, with the fandoms and all and if that were lost it would be like burning books in the middle ages...i hope nothing happens to it.:

If it weren't for LJ, I would have never met my crazy ex-friend who introduced to me to Lucy and who is also (very indirectly and inadvertently) responsible for Lucy finding LPTJ back in the day. So without LJ, Lucy and I would be neither best friends nor on here, and Lucy and Brian wouldn't be getting married. The same can be said for the crazy ex-friend I suppose, so nice silver lining to the mistake of having befriended her.
I rarely use my LJ these days, though I still read my friends page regularly. Lots of the people who used to post regularly are more active on facebook though now, so it seems like things are shifting in that direction, but I can't really see them serving similar purposes for me.

I went Blogger first, but have LJ 'placeholder' so's I can be a 'friend' and read my mates' blogs. I can live without it, but not my Blogger acct.

Just saw this thread. I guess I need to go ahead and copy all my entries into a word doc. I don't have that stuff saved anywhere else, and it's basically the only written account of our two years in Colorado. I'd hate to lose it.

Livejournal is coming out with a 10 year anniversary book, and they're paying people for entries with LJ credits (I think?). So I think it may be safe for now.

Oh yeah, apparently one of Poppy Z. Brite's post-Katrina entries is gonna be in that. She was talking about it in her LJ the other day.
I'm interested to see what else they throw in there.

Oh man, I would love for them to publish some of my angst-ridden diatribes from when I was 18 years old.

I guess a lot of people are uncomfortable with the licensing agreement.
This entry was selected, but she turned it down because of the agreement.

me too! I've been sorta trying out a new blog-thingy for the first time ever, but I feel like I'm cheating on LJ. based on my sad, depleted friends-list there, though, I'm nearly the final holdout anyway.

LiveJournal died a death of attrition, sort of, which is to say that hardly anybody still uses it (of the people who I mostly knew through there). I think that what really took it apart was one friend's super crazy ex who made it such that a bunch of us completely friendslocked everything. At the time, for my free account, that meant going in and locking up each post individually. Big chore. No great reunions, nothing to see. Just missing -- maybe the structure of the place, really.
