But it could easily be about 8 million other things. If you want to rule out Firefox just backup your prefs/bookmarks/etc and uninstall.

thanks--you're probably right about mechanical key failure; it
seems
like there's a very vague pattern in which the question of whether a page is fully loaded before I hit the keys bears on whether they work, but I might just be engaging in some low-complexity pattern-projection here.
I will probably do nothing until my irritation hits a critical mass, then try your suggestion.

Or stop looking at the keyboard. Which keys are rubbing off?
The obvious ones. in order.

I'll check out the sticker options, but repalcing the keyboard sounds more possible. I have actually taken it out to bump up the memory, the quesiton was more about whether there is a market in used keyboards.
It's all a bit redundant anyway, as the bloke bought a new 15" aluminium case monster, so I get the old resin case machine, and this one goes to my MIL who, at the age of 80, needs a laptop to keep up. So we'll replace the keys for her I guess.

Been typing "Lean Cods" a lot? Searching for "Clan Odes"? "Old Canes"? "Clad Nose"?

Thank you. I was wondering who'd come up with the best anagram! "Clad nose" wins, with "lean cods" a close second. I thought it was an interesting way to see which were the most commonly used letters though.

Firefox seems to be using a crazy amount of system resources for a browser. Anybody have any tips? v3.0.11 on Mac OS 10.5.7. I think maybe it's just the newest version of Flash? It seems much worse when loading youtube. Or maybe that last part is just me conflating internet connection issues with system resource issues.

It'll be the plugins: the basic browser is really lean, but like you say, Flash and the like isn't. I guess that a good deal of the resources when you're browsing YouTube are cached videos, which are not small bits of data. In order to stop you straightforwardly copying these videos, they get kept in dynamic memory in that way. I'd guess that every browser would sap lots of resources when browsing YouTube et al.

In addition to Safari 4 sucking ass, the latest iTunes update seems to have made it even more bloated, crash-prone, and shitty. I'm really getting to the point where I'm almost done with Apple.
Plugging in my iPod crashes it every time. Fun.

Hmm, that's weird, I think Itunes has been working a lot better and faster for me lately, even after the latest update. Maybe it's just an impression.

I was wondering if Safari 4 was as bad for the Mac as it is for the PC. Holy God. I would use IE before I used that thing.

Soooo fucking bad. I don't know if it's something in the rendering or what, but every time I launch a new window there's this noticeable hiccup.

All things considered IE is the last browser anyone should use. For real, no zealotry.

Safari 4 has been working very well here, but my girlfriend's computer is still running 10.4... Maybe the necessary scaling back keeps it smooth.

OK, so I have this new (to me) MacBook. When I migrated my account from my old one, everything seems to've gone fine, except my mail. I now have a dead mail application that does nothing. All my account settings are there in Preferences, but it does bugger all. All my mailboxes are there, but empty, and the bastard won't even quit when I tell it to. Any hints?

(just saw that I'd posted this in the wrong thread by accident - re-posting it in a more appropriate place now, sorry for the confusion!)
As of a few weeks ago, I noticed that the audio on my computer often sounds rather muddy and hissy. I finally took the time to play around with various settings and cables and all that and have identified the problem now: it all sounds fine as long as I use the internal speakers (well, as "fine" as the internal speakers are ever going to sound, obviously), use the headphone jack, or attach my USB audio interface to one particular USB slot; the other USB slot, however, seems to be causing the problem. I haven't (yet?) noticed any other problems on that USB slot; it reads my USB stick just fine, for example. Which means this isn't a huge problem so far, as I don't care much which slot I plug the audio interface into, but nonetheless: Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this and what I could do to stop it?
