That's why I still shoot video on tape. (Besides the better image quality and lower compression and easier editing.)

Might I recommend picking up a copy of Lightroom? If you can get the education hook up (or have an old student ID with no expiration date), it's $100 and it's basically like a pro version of Picasa or iPhoto. But the big thing for your situation is that it's all non-destructive and has a lot of automatic back up options. Since it's a professional tool, Adobe understands what a disaster losing images can be and the program goes out of its way to avoid it.

I do have such an ID, in fact, and I'm even legitimately still a student. I will look into it, thank you! Also, I am en route to the post office with your film but anybody else who wants to play is still more than welcome to shoot me a PM.

Awesome! I am so psyched for this. If I had my website together, I'd totally be hyping it. In fact, I might hype it on Twitter.

Did I say 61761? I know I got the rest of it right, so whatever they gave you at the post office is probably it.

Oh man, I'm hankering to play, but I'm notoriously bad at film.....oh, and I just remembered that there's an ancient roll of slide film still in it :-(  and the local shop that used to develop that kind of thing closed at least a year ago... I so want to get better at taking photos, it's something my dad is really into, and his dad was too, and my other grandfather, but I just missed out somehow.

Dude, please send me your address. Trust me, you do not have to have any special skills. This is a game, and it is about having fun. By the time I am done processing and scanning the film god knows if the images will even be visible, seriously.

Shit I really wish I had brought my camera, this sounds like a blast! As it stands it's like 4000 miles away with a half-finished roll of film inside. Like a time capsule. Although I imagine film degrades if I just let it sit in the camera for years?
I kind of fell off film shooting because I never had anywhere to develop it and that was always my favorite part. But this project sounds nice, I'ma look around and see what the cheapest camera possible is.

Folks who don't have a camera, I'm afraid I can't afford to buy & mail everybody disposables, but I can mail you a goodie envelope and a shot list. Also, disposables can be hacked for re-use if you're into that sort of thing: http://www.camerahacker.com/re-use_camera/index.php

Pinhole is another, even cheaper option; http://www.kodak.com/global/en/consumer/education/lessonPlans/pinholeCamera/

Do you have (or can you borrow) a 35mm film camera? Would you like to play a game? I will mail you a roll of B&W 35mm film and a shot list. You will shoot it and send it back. I will develop it and post everybody's photos. You don't need to have a fancy camera -- I got mine for $40 off craigslist, and that's with a new $10 battery. Does that sound like fun? Would some variation on this idea make it better?
I missed this post. You know I have a camera!

My pleasure!

alexandra, it was actually Lalitree's post about sending you film that gave me the idea for this game! If you're not all filmed out send me your address and I'll send you another roll.

I know I should have a lot of folks' addresses already but I cleverly put my address book in storage when we moved. Please re-send!

Yes, please join the game any way you like, trousers! Also, if anybody has problems with their mail, you can always email me your photos and I'll post them with all the others. Let me know and I'll PM you a shot list.

Yay! Apologies for the delay, international folks -- the line at the post office was out the door and the kiosk only takes domestic shipments. Will try again tomorrow.

cbs, your mailbox is full:

ok, I will send it out later today -- I went ahead and mailed the package yesterday anyway since it was already sealed & packed, maybe you can send it in when you get back & it'll be a fun surprise, I'm sure I'll have forgotten about it by then

sorry again for the delay, everything is just a lot slower nowadays

My SLR just spat the dummy :-( I was trying to finish the slide film in it. Took a shot, and it made a slightly strange noise (though I'm so out of practice with the film advancing noise that it may have just been that). Anyway, the shutter is now closed and the display doesn't respond. I don't think it's batteries as I just replaced them... it's a Pentax MZ something...5N

Oh yeah, that's bad. I just took it out of the case again and it's melting down. Really hot to touch at the battery case end...once the batteries have cooled down I'll see if I can get it going again, but any clues???

All of my film cameras are pretty mechanical, so I'm probably not the best to be answering this, but strange noises and overheating sounds like a possible mechanical problem? Maybe something is seized up in there? I'd try to disconnect the battery as soon as possible, hot batteries are prone to getting much worse very quickly.
