I've pretty much only used Twitter so far to try and get Shaq to be my friend, but I might start using it more.

Pollo and Greg often send barely-comprehensible missives to twitter and label them #TWURT - Greg exclusively so.

My Twitter (@sassela) is locked and not very interesting. I post a lot of pictures of my clothes.

I should stop going on about it, but this is really the correct way to do Twitter. In conversation the other night after reading some of them I kept talking in caps lock about choking on twurts that went down the wrong way twurts can be lethal lol and such-and-such.

promptly hated myself for joining and deleted my account.

I did this with Facebook, but Twitter is quite good fun. I mainly follow funny people ( @serafinowicz, @DrSamuelJohnson, @RealBillBailey @jupitusphillip ) or news sources, music ( @machinebabriek, @cjf = Fennesz, @Hyperdub, @Fiery_Furnaces, @mapsadaisical = great blog pal), or sport.

As for usefulness, I follow a few work-related people (Scott Thornbury, for example, leader of the Dogme in ELT movement is on there, as is Jeremy Harmer a well known ELT writer), including authors and materials sites and so on.

Also, there are useful one-offs. A Premiership footballer recently caused a stir by tweeting his dissatisfaction with his manager. Another one was Phillip Hughes, the  Australian opening batsman, who during the current Ashes series tweeted thet he'd been dropped before any of the mainstream media got the story. Things like that, when all the PR men and spinners that surround famous people are taken away, make it potentially quite anarchic at times. Another one was during the British Golf Open. The on-course reporter was on twitter posting all kinds of updates before they were broadcast anywhwere else.

Of course, I have one or two personal contacts on there, but only one or two. There's a beardy bad man who used to hang around here a lot (though not so much these days) who I dog relentlessly.

He seems to have made a lot of money out of being a comedian. So I suppose it's a matter of opinion. Once again yours and mine do not intersect.

I don't see it. What's so inherently bad about twitter?

I'm thinking about taking the plunge, but I don't know whether to do it with my actual name and have to worry about what I say or whether to do it with an alias and worry about what kind of alias I should pick.

Obviously, I advise using your actual name and letting everyone assume you've incurred a brain injury.
