I like what you said about attention, and how casually and without backing info a lot of music recommendations are these days, and how wack that is. Totally agree. For that reason, I may actually check out Tiny Vipers, even though there's an equal chance that I'd totally love it or totally hate it. Worth a shot, though, I'm thinking.

I agree with the whole bit about attention, and I thought it was refreshing and well said, though I'd argue that if you're writing a blog almost exclusively dedicated to recommending music, either people will trust your judgment and continue to read, or they'll disagree with your opinions and eventually stop reading.

D00d, I just bought the Tiny Vipers record, like, three days ago.  I really like the record, but for some reason I'm not seeing the article of the front page.  WHY MUST YOU TORTURE ME SO, CRUEL WORLD?

Not just a dedicated thread, but a personal recommendation!  How can I refuse?  Seems like it might be the kind of thing that's float my boat, though, you're right.  (Curious to know the reason for the recommendation, actually, but maybe it's best not to ask.)

And if it's not great, I'll still have this to ponder: 'your attention is more valuable than the present age would have you believe. It's the one thing you brought to this world that it didn't have before, and it's the only thing of consequence that you'll permanently remove from this world when you leave.'

In less wonderful news, I see she's playing two dates here in a couple of weeks -  in Cork and at The Electric Picnic festival - but no Dublin show.  I'm not sure she's worth €240 to see, and a 450 mile round trip may be beyond me.

Great records and good company for long days spent alone in a basement (a.k.a. work).

(Curious to know the reason for the recommendation, actually, but maybe it's best not to ask.)

Things it is not:
Balkan
Three-and-two-thirds over four time
Accordion
"Ickle-Spiddal-sickle-riddle"

I'm guessing Jolie/Mimi/Edie...

Neko makes it €120 per.

I'm guessing Jolie/Mimi/Edie...

And maybe Nancy Elizabeth and Norma?

There’s something about a pure, unadorned voice that’s hard to beat, and hers is special.

Or maybe it was my recent reference to Janis Ian's 'At Seventeen'?

Then again, perhaps Ms Tiny Vipers also just moved to a house by the sea and misses her old housemates...

(Didn't get this reference, though: "Ickle-Spiddal-sickle-riddle")

If all this cryptic twin stuff means what I think it does, it sounds like a record I ought to check out...

seen her around live like a half dozen times.  the first 4 did nothing for me.  the last 2 were phenomenal though; she did some crazy thing with overtones on her guitar slowly building and it felt much less singer-songwriter than before.  wins my prize for most improved.

New album "Life on Earth" is excellent.  Not usually my stuff, but utterly compelling/ mesmerising both as a recording and as a live performer (watched her last week play in a crowded port bar and command complete silence) as this clip of an album track "Dreamer" shows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLHhr5eIEdU

Back catalogue is also worth seeking. The earlier Sub Pop album "Hands Across the Void" is also very good and has a few other instruments layered and some epic distortion freak-outs.

Real early stuff I found still available through Luckyhorse Industries is also really good in a quite different way. It's always kind of re-assuring to know that great artists are not born perfect and have a developmental curve: http://www.luckyhorseindustries.com/tiny-vipers/

Some of the early stuff reminds me of lo-fi early Crowsdell (Shannon Wright) but also some different snarly acoustic pop sounds there. Also worth checking is the "Empire Prism" EP which is two very long "experimental" pieces. "Can Magic Save the World From Dying" is great if you like some lo-fi Popul Vuh/ Fripp & Eno/ Tangerine Dream kind of weirdness.

Got Life on Earth a while ago, and it proved to be difficult to get into. But I got the opening line of 'Development' stuck in my head and decided to put it on. All the sudden it's clicking, and it's so amazing I can't understand why I couldn't hear this earlier.
