More NYC Questions
«
on:
Aug 24, 2009, 01:20:44 AM »
The last one is up to 20 pages, and also I read through ten pages of it and didn't find answers to my questions.
So my dad and stepmother are gonna be in NY for all of about four days in September, and they're staying in Manhattan, and they like to eat good food, but didn't know where to go. And I thought, I know people I can ask about food! So: where is nice to eat, that has good vegetarian (stepmum is; dad isn't) and not pricey? Say what sort of food, if its an eat in sort of place or not, and where it is if possible.
Thanks!

Are they spending any time in the boroughs at all, or just Manhattan?
EDIT: also, where in Manhattan are they staying?

Just Manhattan, I think. Being all touristy and going to art galleries and other tourist shit. My step mother has a massive, massive fear of flying, so this will be her first time overseas. They're staying at the Wellington hotel on 7th ave, of all places.
And thanks Miles, that looks good! I'll send them the link.

I'm a big fan of
Pukk
, a vegetarian Thai place down in the East Village on 1st Ave, which gets
mixed but mostly positive reviews
on yelp but has seriously delicious Duck Basil.

How long will it take me to get from DC to Times Square if I leave DC at around 6PM on a Friday. Additionally, where the fuck around there, or anywhere else, can I stick my car at said time of night?

Amtrak should take you about 3 hours and change. I cannot recommend driving.

Yeah, I'd be wary about that, too, unless you absolutely need to have a car there. If you want a cheaper alternative to Amtrak, there's always the Chinatown bus, which is $20 and a little under 5 hours.

I don't think Chinatown bus leaves around that time, though.

There's a host of buses that run that route. I would still recommend Amtrak at 6 PM on a Friday over Columbus Day weekend.

Amtrak does offer a certain level of comfort/ease but it's still ridiculously expensive for that trip (but I don't tend to assign a very high value to my comfort and ease). There are plenty of Chinatown/Greyhound/etc. buses making the trip. Unfortunately the Bolt buses (which in my experience tend to be newer and generally cleaner, if not more comfortable) are all sold out, and I doubt standby tickets would be readily available on a holiday weekend.
In any case, don't drive unless you're a glutton for punishment.
(Worth noting: for the cost of Amtrak you could fly, but of course in this case Amtrak is the better option because Penn Station is much closer and more convenient to Times Square than any of the airports.)

Last time I took the bus I was next to a screaming baby and a woman who thought it was a good idea to change her baby's diaper on the bus seat (not in the bathroom, 2 ft away).

If driving is a bad idea on account of traffic, taking a bus is a far worse idea on account of traffic.

The bus drivers are insanely good at finding alternate routes.

Straight temporality aside, there's also productivity to consider; driving forces you to be driving, listen to music, or maybe talking on a cell phone. With any kind of passenger ride, you can read, draw, write, sleep, do job-work, surf LPTJ if you have an internet-phone, watch movies on your laptop, etc, etc.

I'm sure that bus drivers have radios and maps and a good working knowledge of available alternate routes, but I can't imagine that a bus trip would ever come within 90 minutes or so of an FK-driven personal automobile. I guess in my case, spending more time in my destination however narrow the difference, is inherently preferable to a more relaxed or productive journey. But I've had occasional bad luck with buses, so I'm certainly biased.

Just wanna echo the general consensus here: do not fucking drive. Whatever you pay to park will probably nearly be the difference on train fare, anyhow.

That and the $15 in tolls each way.

The 6pm amtrak is a no go.
I'm cool with driving and cool with it being spirit-breaking. I've lived out here two years now and am a ridiculously aggressive/fast driver, and, I really like driving.
So I'm driving. Talked to el hotel and they said parking's no prob. If I leave from the hill area around 6 I should get there what 11:30 or midnight?

I'd say more like 10-11p. If you're getting in that late, you should avoid the worst of rush hour. And if you've got parking at the hotel, that's another huge hassle taken care of.
What are you in town for?

Please, when you get to the city, don't drive like this. Pedestrians hate dying.
