New random music thread!

For comments like this one about how the Japandroids LP I just bought is already starting to split along the top edge. No fair! I tried to return it but it was the last one they had. Oh well.

That is a good record, too.

I am going to be a guest DJ on my friend's internet radio show for Radio Phoenix.  The show is 8 pm to 10 pm MST, which means it starts in about 2 hours.  If'n you want to listen you can follow that link and there is a Listen Now! button what opens up a new window/tab or somesuch.

The last time I did this I learned that the difference between making a mix CD and doing a radio show is that you have to speak coherently about what you are playing.  I might do better this time; we shall see.

So The Dave Matthews Band somehow won the honor of being the official Saturday Night Football band for ESPN...all season. "Playing songs from the new album Big Whiskey etc etc" said the announcer after the commercial break. That's weird.

Anyway, the song they were playing sounded pretty decent. Sure beats the hell out of Kenny Chesney.

More of a Big 12 sound to Kenny Chesney's SEC.

Dave Matthews Band = Mountain West.

If you'd ever lived in Colorado, you'd know that!

Haha, I guess DMB is probably bigger in Boulder than in Ft. Collins or Colorado Springs...

Whoa, look at the album art iTunes came up with for the two songs in my library from Disney's Robin Hood:

They're probably even bigger than that in Charlottesville, guys. Duh.

I associate the ACC strictly with the Carolinas. In my head, the Virginia and Florida schools just happen to be in the conference because they historically outpaced Elon and Furman in available scholarships or something.

UVa is an original member school, though, and Dave Matthews Band are the most UVa band ever. That's all I was saying.

Now, based on your Carolinas definition, it could probably be argued successfully that the true ACC band is Hootie And The Blowfish. I wouldn't debate that assertion.

That would work for Atlanta, too. Plus, it just seems to fit together nicely. Hootie it is.

The one girl I knew who went to an ACC school really liked Lil' Jon. My cousin goes to Wake Forest, maybe I'll ask him what the kids are listening to these days.

Breakfast at Sulimays? Two old guys, one old gal. Not very insightful, but Pitchfork seems to really dig it.

Popmatters is getting Pearl Jam all wrong. But they like the album, so there's that.

Quote
their 2006 record—simply titled Pearl Jam—was nothing short of a revelation. For the first time in their career, guitarist Mike McCready was the principal sonic architect, and McCready made his intentions clear: he wanted to reconnect with the band’s early sound, penning powerful rockers that were more melodic than angst-ridden, more soulful than distortion-fueled. It was, in short, the album that patient Pearl Jam fans had been waiting for, and boy did it deliver. Shortly thereafter, Eddie Vedder released his first-ever solo album in the form of the Into the Wild soundtrack, and the group’s crowning achievement (Ten) was given the deluxe reissue treatment, not only reminding everyone just how influential that record was, but also showing that group had now officially moved beyond it—as great as Ten was, Pearl Jam were not going to let that disc define them any longer.

I mean, I don't dislike their more accessible, straight-ahead rocking stuff, but it's not why I'm the big fan that I am. Much like Queen, I think their best stuff is their weirdest stuff (i.e. I disagree that Ten is their crowning achievement). And I had certainly not been patiently waiting for Pearl Jam. I still like Riot Act better, and I think that the main problem with the self-titled record is that there aren't any curveballs.

I personally don't dig "Riot Act" much more than I like "Binaural," and while I liked the self-titled album a good bit more than those two, it's still only on the level of "Yield" or so (by which I mean middle of the pack where their work is concerned). But I do hate the attitude that it was all downhill from "Ten." "Ten" was important, but that's not to say it was great. "Vs," "Vitalogy" and "No Code" are all better, even though only "Vs" is as internally consistent. When I listen to "Ten" now, the production kinda kills me, and even on the remastered version, some of the songs kinda drag. Plus "Black" and "Jeremy" have been killed for me by overplay, and I never liked "Garden" that much.
