Onto the 2004 comeback album, now. It's pretty good stuff! Overlong, but what the hey. "Might Makes Right" is a damn good tune.

While we're on the subject, should I try Monks of Doom? y/n
I just added Chris Pederson to my ongoing Favorite Drummers project--can't believe I hadn't already added him--and I'm eager to hear MORE STUFF.
if you like "Waka" then you'll dig MoD...they have a heavy riff sound like that. plus Victor sings.

I like "Waka," sure. What's the best album to start with?

I try not to complain about the constant bass pulse that makes my floor throb late into the night, because that's what you get when you move over a bar and I accept that.
what nobody told me, though, was just how fucking douchey this bar would be, such that it plays the Black Eyed Peas's retch-inducing "I Gotta Feeling" EVERY SINGLE NIGHT at bartime, and extra-loud to drive out the last patrons. God, I hate that nightly moment when that "tonight's gonna be a good good night" interrupts whatever I'm doing. you people who think Lady Gaga is bland and uninteresting just have no fucking idea what those terms even mean until you go through this every night for months on end. how slowly does Top 40 evolve; I thought this would be a passing hit, it isn't the postmillennial "Celebration," is it?

That's possibly the worst song ever written. I'd take GaGa over that shit any day.

M just sent a PM with a cute theft from "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues." Now I'm consumed by the desire to play Highway 61 Revisited, but too lazy to dig through my boxes for it, so I'll probably just crib the album off a blog even though it's currently residing somewhere within eight feet of me. I can't tell if this constitutes a successful internet moment or a total IRL failure. Possibly both at once.

They are two sides of the same coin.

Hey, we talked about that in library school! I.e., the gargantuan task of organizing and cataloging all that shit.

The sticker on the front of the Deluxe Edition of
Jehovahkill
that just arrived in my mailbox says "Julian Cope's Heathen Folk Masterpiece!"
How could it not rule?

Update: this deluxe package here is now one of the most eye-pleasing CDs I have in my collection...all done up in royal blue and gold. It's seriously gorgeous. Inside, the lyrics to one song are printed (in gold ink) and they're so good (and short, and sing-songy) that I'm going to post them here:
Quote
Socrates, mine enemy
Mine enemy and yours
Socrates I do defy by walking on all fours
I curse the Age of Reason
I curse it for All Men
I curse my need to curse it
Then I curse it once again
Roman Thought, mine enemy
Mine enemy and thine
Roman Thought I do defy by walking Serpentine
And through steep-sided valleys
Close to tributaries divine
I beat that Cursed Roman Thought
That cult of the Straight Line

So NPR did a story on Death this morning:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=124710357
I had no idea they'd reformed and were playing SXSW. They might go on tour afterward. These are exciting things.

Earlier I listened to samples from Christopher Lee's new symphonic "metal" concept album, Charlemagne.
I wish I could say it was hilariously bad but I thought it was just kind of boring.
There's a myspace for it

On my Pandora station "Steve Earle Radio" I'll take some Replacements, hell yeah, that sounds good, some Violent Femmes, sure, The Whigs, why not? But Friday I'm In Love by the Cure? I'm not sure how to plot that Kevin Bacon progression but not in this station ok Pandora? Thanks.

I don't read BoingBoing, so I missed the boat when
Die Antwoord
first made a splash. But I have to say I'm intrigued. The frontman is a guy with a long pedigree, and I've listened to his stuff before. It wasn't anything like this (not in the slightest -- it is very, very middle-class art-school white guy stuff) but his technique shows the benefit of experience. But yes, there's definitely some image-mongering going on there (like there could be any doubt). I mean, he's not even Afrikaans, and his given name is Watkin Tudor Jones. But whatever. Tupac went to art school. And I don't think he's lying too much when he says he's skinny because he didn't have money for food, because there is no money to be made rapping in SA. I keep reading comparisons to Eminem, which isn't all wrong, but I'm thinking more of the Streets when I see this: why act like America's urban poor when you've got slums right outside your door? I also can't help thinking of a song the frontman recorded in a previous outfit where he chided SA rappers for trying to sound American. Anyway, the videos are quite something (whenever they're speaking Afrikaans, by the way, they're swearing like sailors in vulgar but unimaginative ways, with various connecting phrases that are equavelent to 'you know', 'for sure', etc.) and it already sounds a fair deal better than the other rap I've heard out of SA.

The only reason I'm not 100% sold right now is that, while they
get it
, and they do on a whole range of things, it's not like this stuff is being graded. There isn't a TA somewhere writing encouraging notes in the margins. It has to stand on its own merits. Right now they're sowing a consumate skill at image mongering, and that gets you somewhere (viz. the Lady Gaga thread), but not, in my opinion, all the way. Waddy/Ninja has good mic skills, and there's some bite to the lyrics, but this isn't quite
Liquid Swords
just yet. But we'll see where they go.
This Vice interview
is one of the funnier band interviews I've read in a long time, though.

I heard about this today:
6-disc Buddy Holly Box Set,
Not Fade Away
I think I could get into something like that.

My earliest memory is of sitting on the floor in front of a record player playing a Buddy Holly best of over and over. That and a Supremes LPf are the first things I remember. They both had bright orange covers if I remember correctly.
