I thought their performance was decent, but paled in comparison to Springsteen's last year and Prince's a few years ago. A pretty bizarre choice booking The Who, considering they haven't done anything relevant in like thirty years. I would still count them as perhaps my favorite "classic rock" band, all things considered.

Forgot about Springsteen. When was Tom Petty's performance, then? I thought his was the best overall--in the context of a Super Bowl halftime show--even if it wasn't quite as bizarre or exciting as Prince's.

The Superbowl was on CBS, & every single show on CBS uses a Who song as their theme music. Every single one.

I realize this is an odd question, but does anyone know of a good way to remove sticker residue from a digipak?

The hair dryer method worked wonders.

This makes sense, though the only CBS show I knew of that had a Who theme song was CSI. There is literally nothing on CBS that interests me in the least.

what I really wanted to post, though, was that "Natural Light" by Casiotone for the Painfully Alone affects me more than just about any other song from the past few years; I had always thought he was saying "I found a picture from May '45," but for reasons that are utterly beyond me, I just looked up the lyrics and it turns out be "from before the fight," and now I wish I had just left it alone because I prefer it my way, having already emotionally invested in the song being set 15 years later in 1960. stupid internet.
That's a great song, sorry you got it half-ruined there!
hey, this just came on my MP3 player on the way home, and turns out that my mental singing-along remains "May '45," so lyrical actuality loses to my preferred hearing.
now if I can only revert Nirvana's "In Bloom" to "rape the dog again" like I originally thought Kurt was saying way back before that damn "Lithium" CD single with the lyrics went and stripped it of its transgressive shock-value . . .

The CD player in this new car haaaaates the stack of ancient CD-Rs I normally listen to.
Last week we picked up the copies of the newest LP from one of Bill's bands, so I put one in the car, since it was NEW and NOT A CD-R. I was listening to it on the way home from work today, and realizing what some of the songs were about made me alternately teary and giddy. (caveat is that most of the songs are either unintelligible or about biology, which, though awesome, is hard to get emotional over. and i'm a robot.)

Oh man, that's great! Much better lyric.
I
just now
had a corrected lyric revelation listening to Fiestas + Fiascos. Years ago, I downloaded Lifter Puller's appearance on WFMU and had been mishearing the lyrics to--well, everything, I guess--but in particular, I thought "Lifter Puller vs. the End of the Evening" ended with "Pontius Pilate watches Night Court twice in the sky."
Which, given Finn's lyrical tropes y'know, a Night Court reference didn't seem out of the question.

man, now there's a tempting reason to install a torrent client - there's some fantastic writing in some of those magazines. i have a little folder in my bookshelf of articles i tore out of plan b (and careless talk costs lives, or at least i think that was what their previous magazine was called) because when i was throwing stuff out i couldn't bear to get rid of them. hope they all carry on being awesome people.

Yeah, although a bit uneven, Plan B always had some great writing - I was a recent subscriber when they had to stop - shame!
And Comes With A Smile was also great, as narlus points out.

Holy shit. So I've been jamming on Amon Tobin records lately, and out of curiosity, I checked Pitchfork's archives just now to see how they'd been reviewed. My favorite Tobin album, 1998's
Permutations
, got a 9.8! Shit! That's one of the highest scores I've ever seen on the 'Fork. Not a single album scored below an 8. I'd figured the reviews would be positive, but it's veritable lovefest over there.
Well, a review written by Schreiber in 1999 isn't gonna quite compare apples to apples with a review written today....

Tiny Mix Tapes have their decade list posted now - it's a nice one, not least because they have a Deerhoof record I don't know yet in fifth place.

They should have done that years ago. Palladia is pretty good, but I'd really love if somebody would come out with a decent, curated video show at some point. I can't be the only one that's lusting for a return of 120 minutes.

It wouldn't be the same, man. You'd be much better off watching reruns of the original.

Well, y'know, not exactly a complete clone. Matt Pinfield wasn't exactly my favorite host on the planet, but MTV2's Subterranean show was pretty decent for awhile. And MTV2 was amazing when they first launched and didn't have commercials. With MTV, I always got the feeling that most of the staff was infinitely hipper and more music-centric than the advertising sales department would allow them to be. But like most things in the industry, the difficulty of monetizing music videos in the context of the usual way advertising is sold pretty much strangles the possibility of a TV channel doing a show like that. It's not like the genre is disappearing since you can find whatever you want on YouTube or on-demand services, but that's not the same as being able to watch a block of videos curated by someone who knows a thing or two about music.
And I do have a box of old tapes of mid-90s vintage 120 minutes and a few other shows that I've been meaning to digitize and put up somewhere, but they're way up at my mom's place. I'll get around to sharing them someday.

I watched a fuck of a lot of MTV2 in college. You remember when they played EVERY VIDEO IN THEIR ARCHIVES in alphabetical order? That shit was incredible. Took them weeks, if I remember correctly.

Oh man, that was AWESOME. I remember at one point, they had a couple Ghostface and Aphex Twin videos on pretty heavy rotation just because they were cool.
