I like IO9, mostly for the tv show and movie reviews. They have a post up for the top 20 sci fi novels of the decade and it's laughable, AND it pisses me off.

Acacia was alright, but George R R Martin released A Storm of Swords this decade. Plus, Acacia is a fantasy? WTF? Glasshouse by Charles Stoss continues his recent record of shallow but textually interesting. But, on this list? UGH. Cory Doctorow is coming together a bit more, but this boing boing editor should not be on this list, because his work, while gaining strength, doesn't have an existence, beyond the moment it's published, read for free on the internet, or bought. It's not a classic, not even close.

World War Z? Seriously? The same crowd who buy zombie t shirts bought this crap. Sorry. LAME.

Margaret Atwood? She's OK but ...

Man. Not only does this list name fantasy as sci-fi, it skips over stuff like Vandermeer, for stuff like Atwood. It throws fantasy in the mix, but says Acacia is a book of the decade? Hey, Acacia was alright, but the followup The Other Lands was MUCH MUCH Better. But still. Top 20 of the decade in fantasy? No.

I've only read four entries - for a total of twelve books! - but yeah, that's a fucking lot of fantasy for a sci-fi list.

ive only read one of those books, and its world war z. entertaining book but i wouldnt call it scifi at all.

the only books i come up with off the top of my head for my personal list are Altered Carbon and its sequels. i dont really keep up on new books i guess.

Richard Morgan is good, I loved Altered Carbon. He never equalled it, although black man or thirteen seems to have either won an award or sold better -- I can't recall.

thirteen was pretty bad i thought, and his latest fantasy thing got shit on by everyone that ive ever seen talking about it (though im still going to read it sometime). outside of Altered Carbon and its sequels he hasnt really impressed me, though Market Forces was weird enough to be enjoyable i guess.

That fantasy novel was humorously terrible. It featured gay sex, which was Morgan's addition to the "gritty" modern fantasy canon. Just awful as a novel. He's a poor man's Joe Abercrombie.

Props to them for the Mieville and Chiang inclusions, but that Doctorow novel in particular was awful and several of the bigger names feel obligatory. There are a few books on there I might look into, though.

i read Singularity Sky by Charlie Stross, it was ok. a pretty fun ride, and some far out ideas were thrown around. i wouldnt put it on any lists or go out of my way to recommend it to anyone though.
