It's ok. I think once they iron out the kinks and the performance issues it'll be pretty useful. And I think if it turns out to be feasible for third parties (like, say, Apple) to write native OS Wav clients, and maybe even for other third parties to run their own Wave servers (that is, if it is simple enough to plug into that developers can use it like email) then it might have a real chance. It's at neither of those places right now. But it's kind of fun.

Yeah, first thing I thought was, 'damn, this bitch needs a native client'.

Did you see the arstechnica article about using wave for rpgs?  I was browsing through information about writing gadgets and the API and stuff, and it seems writing a generic RPG tabletop gadget would be a fairly straightforward task.  That would be pretty cool.

Don't talk like that. I've spent a little time the last few days drawing up characters for nothing in particular.

Just got my invite today, like three days after my friend sent it. Interested to play around with it.

I remember back before the invites came out, RPGers were super excited about its potential for online gaming. I'd love to see that.

There was talk on this board some time ago about using the online environment that was supposed to ship with DnD 4th ed, but that went by the wayside.

Yeah, that was a hella interesting article. I idly considered going to that page that links all the different RPGs that are running, but MAN do I not need to be the member of any RPGs right now.

It is kind of cool to see relatively large (UI) features implemented in a matter of days, though. Like the profile format keeps changing, so my profile data keeps getting erased. But it's neat to see the giant ship of a Google App turning around like that.

I went to the page, and skimmed through games with descriptions like:

Davy, best thing is to accept the invite. You'll see some folks in your contact list, so you can start a conversation. Let me know your google account and I'll contact you.
Yeah, first thing I thought was, 'damn, this bitch needs a native client'.
Waveboard for OS X is not a native client, it's a frontend to the web interface, but it has badge notifications and keyboard shortcuts and feels generally snappier than Firefox, so it's a step in the right direction. On Windows there's a Google Wave extension for Firefox that will at least sit in your Firefox tray and let you know when you've got new messages.

I'm also impressed by how users in the software/hacker/internet at large communities keep finding new ways to be utterly retarded about Google Wave. Either by completely panning it as somewhere between a colossal failure or a fascist dictatorship (months before it even goes into beta), or by thinking of more and more other kinds of software or computing experiences that Google Wave will completely subsume. Any developer who has the temerity to release any web application or software having anything to do with any kind of communication will immediately be met with 'Sounds ok, but who cares? Google Wave'

When is google going to release Google I'm Cool? I remember I was dating a chick who had the gmail before I did, and when she finally got an invite she invited me, but there was some tension in the relationship up until I got the invite -- because she was cooler than I was. And I never got over the fact that she invited me, so I had to kick her ass to the curb so no one knew I wasn't there from the beginning. . I know we're all ha ha-ing about how it's not really cool, and we're being sardonic, but underneath it all, I def sense some real Google I'm Cool goin' on, and I just want to get in on that, before one of you breaks up with me.

Hey, Alexandra, let me know if you get any Google Dick invites. I really want to stick that in my ass, and knowing how cool you are, I thought maybe you could jam it up there?...

*WAVES back*

This is kinda boring when everybody on your contacts list is working or something and not trying to wave.

Also I was going to come in here and say that it had since been made entirely clear to me that Wave isn't - necessarily - about live action... that Wave is a multi-media platform for communication and (at least somewhat) traceable collaboration that, yes, can be real time but things are more clear when it isn't.

Which, yeah, sure.  But holy goatlord.  Any time I use a standard linear texty chat function in the future I will feel the lack.  Clarity is nothing, editing everyone else's text and allowing conversation threads to dance around the page is a glorious thing.  Collaboration doesn't need to be linear.  Freedom to do what you need, work on what you need, include what you need inspires allows you work creatively.

I've got some invites to this apparently, if anyone wants one.  I guess that kind of runs contrary to the spirit of this thread, but there you go.
