OK, this was mentioned in regard to store names in the past (Costcos, Pennys, even WalMarts), but I just got an email from someone that said:

My iPod mini suddenly stopped working completely the other day, and nothing I could do would revive it.  I'd had it for about five years, so figured that was a pretty good run, and reluctantly bought a refurbished nano to replace it.  The nano is currently wending its way through the postal system, heading toward my front door.

So today, my old mini mysteriously started working again.  I wish I hadn't bought the new one, now.

If it makes you feel any better, it'll probably die again soon.

You can essentially make the old ones like new by replacing the battery and the drive, yes? I have a 2nd gen that's sitting useless and I'm sure I could probably refurb it and give it to someone who needs one.

I've already replaced the battery once, but that seemed to be preceded by a long period of less-effective battery life.  I wonder if it's the drive, this time.

They do that here too. Maybe they're worried that as renters are low-life scum, they don't want them to break in and squat. I dunno, but I do know that real estate agents here hate renters with a passion and treat them like shit. They only deal with rental properites because one day they might get to sell the property or the tenants might want to buy something.

Yeah, that's kind of weird.  When I was inquiring about places on craigslist, my calls starting going like:

"Hello?"
"Hi, I'm calling about the property listed on craiglist in (x) neighborhood for (x) per month.  Where is it located?
"Oh, well the apartment is a one bedroom, and-"
"Great!  Where is it located?"
"Well, it's in (x) neighborhood, and-"
"Lovely!  What are the cross streets?"

They do that because commissioned salespeople of all kinds vastly prefer selling in person, so any opportunity to get themselves physically near you is hoarded mercilessly.

But why do it for rental properties and not sale properties. I still think it's because they regard renters as second classs citizens. There's no way they could get away with it on a property for sale, right?

Long story short: I had an experience today reminiscent of those apocryphal stories about people trying to spend a $2 bill and having the police called on them.  Except this was a $50 (pre-plastic strip) that any American over the age of 12 should be able to recognize.

What a motherfucker of a morning.

First of all, I had an evening class last night so I drank a late cup of coffee. That cup of coffee kept me up until 3 am, which was unfortunate because I had to drive Finn to school this morning. So I get 4 hours of sleep, wake up at 7:15 with a terrible sore throat (the one lingering annoyance from my holiday flu), throw on some clothes, and freeze my ass off driving to E's house. I knock on the door, expecting Finn to be all decked out and ready to go (as he's supposed to be), and I find him still asleep in bed. Wtf. Even if he was ready to go out the door, I was just going to make it on time. E is wondering if we should keep him home from school another day to see if his cough goes away. I wake him up, he seems fine, so I say he should go to school. He doesn't want to go to school. He's sick, he says. But he looks fine, no fever, not coughing much. So I wrestle him into his clothes, and he's crying as I shuffle him out the door. I'm thinking, he'll be fine once he's having fun at school.

We arrive too late for him to eat breakfast. He's not thrilled, but he's stopped crying. I drop him off, feeling a little uneasy about it, and drive home. I sit down at the computer and try to finish my 2009 mixes but I'm thwarted at every step by drop.io's faulty web design. My throat is still sore. I'm cold. I need a fucking hot shower. Well, my shower's been out of commission for days, very weak water pressure and all...I've been taking baths of all things. So yesterday I called the landlord about it, she sent somebody, and my showerhead got changed out. I was looking forward to it. So I turn on the hot water, it's getting warm, so I step into the shower before it gets really hot. It never does. I should know better than attempt a hot shower in this building at 8:45 in the morning--the hot water is long gone by then. So the water is lukewarm, and furthermore, the flow coming out of the new and inferior showerhead is weak as balls. God fucking damn it. I try fiddling with the knob on the showerhead, but nothing happens, I try shaking the nozzle a bit, and the whole fucking contraption comes off in my hands. I'm standing there wet and naked, shivering, as this solid stream of tepid water crashes down on my face like the piss of giants.

I turn it off, towel dry, and climb back into the god damned bed. I pull up the covers. I say fuck this. I set my phone alarm for noon, at which time I'll need to go pick up Finn. I'm laying there, finally getting warm, getting sleepy, and the phone rings. It's an unfamiliar number. I answer. It's the school. Finn won't stop crying. He says he's sick. He wants to be carried. They'll leave it up to me, they say. Up to me, my ass. I tell them I'll be there in a half-hour. I get dressed. I drive all the way across town to the school. I pick up Finn. He's fucking fine. I say, you want to get some breakfast? He likes that idea. I do, too. Some coffee, an egg & cheese biscuit, some grits...these things will do us good. We arrive at the restaurant, order our food, and sit down. I get him a glass of water and go to fill up my mug with coffee. I return seconds later to a table completely covered with water. He's spilled his drink everywhere. On the seats, on our hats and gloves, on the book he was reading, on the table and the napkins and the floor and himself. I clean it up. The food is ok; the coffee, subpar.  We finish it and we drive home without incident.

I'm a fucking zombie right now.

Guys, don't try to text while you're sitting on the john, or you may have an accident similar to the one I had this afternoon wherein I DROPPED MY CELL PHONE INTO THE TOILET INTO WHICH I HAD MOMENTS BEFORE DEFECATED IN.

SHIT.

I am still having difficulty processing the things I had to do to get it out since I am not going to flush a cell phone in a 60 year old building.  Don't want some plumber slapping that unspeakably filthy lump of plastic up on the sink, saying "Now there's yer problem."  But god, I shudder thinking about the retrieval.  Just....you don't wanna know.

Surprisingly, the thing still kind of works.  The display is fine, it dials and receives calls, but the outgoing sound is distant and quiet.

I'll need to check my policy, but I'm pretty sure dropping your device into a poop-filled toilet voids something on the insurance.  Maybe I should just turn it off, put it away and report it lost.
