In all fairness, the difficulty in changing the fog lights is really the only complaint, and you don't really need them to drive in the first place. Other than that, it's pretty awesome on all fronts.

Oh word. I'm still terrified of Hyundais after they were absolute pieces of shit throughout the first decade in which I could drive. I hear they are better now but the ones that are decent quality won't be old enough for me to pick up on the $2000-or-less used car market for quite a while.

Mm, yeah. They have pretty wicked warranty thes days. I've pretty much just done maintenance and it's never left me by the side of the road. It's also survived two minor to medium accidents. You might be able to find a used one cheap. I paid more than you want to spend when it was two years old in 2005, but the ones produced during this decade have all worn well. Kia is actually getting pretty good these days, as well. A lot of people I know have hyundais and have pretty similar experiences. As long as you do the maintenance, they run pretty well.

I'm not in the market right now--my 96 Geo Metro is doing me quite well since I got it in September. It got around quite well in the snow over the past three days, even though it's a little tiny jellybean. And it has a tape deck!

But yeah, I'll keep all that in mind in a few years when I need another car.

Fuck fuck fuck. It took me about two hours to muster the energy to go to work this morning, and I've just arrived to find out that the heating doesn't work. It can't be more than 10°C in here. Fuck this stupid university, seriously.

About six weeks ago a woman who'd been released from a detention centre came to live with us, usually when people we know are released we help find them accomodation in squats we've sent up. But there was no room at the time and we decided that as I'd just moved into my girlfriends room and my room had been vacated this woman could move in there. Things have gone pretty well, with everyone in the house getting on pretty well with her. Sadly last week she was lifted when reporting, and she's been back in detention since with a removal notice for the 23rd. Some of us in the house always knew this was going to happen as her case for asylum was pretty weak (despite most of the house holding no borders postitions we do for the most part have to work within the legal system with these cases), and have been prepared, but sadly we didn't make this completley clear to others in the house due to privacy of case issues. People are pretty down at the moment and some are going to visit her in detention this afternoon. Personally my feelings of gulit and sadness stem from my lack of engagement with the shittiness of her removal because I've now worked so many losing cases and have seen too many people I know be deported and know I wouldn't be able to continue doing so if I engaged emotionally with them all too deeply. It's a coldness which is all about self-preservation, and I wish it could be a little different.

Dom, I've seen this dynamic (or something analogous) with Gaby for several years, as she's had to hold her emotions at bay while caring for young people who refuse to take their HIV meds, abused wives who refuse help, kids with leukemia, etc. It does require a certain detachment, but it's necessary in order to do the good work that you, she, and others do, and I admire you all for it immensely.

back to being annoyed: having no heat is one thing; I keep it cool anyway. but today I woke up because there was cold air being pumped in my face; apparently my climate-control dial does nothing, and for whatever reason the fan function is operating.

now, it's time to speak with the landlord. grrr@%)&^$!!!$FFF

Man, I've been putting off so many apartment-related annoyances it's ridiculous. I think it's because, on the whole, this is the best place I've ever lived--in terms of layout, amenities, location, cleanliness--and I almost feel guilty about bringing anything to my landlord's attention, like the radiator in the bathroom that spews boiling hot water all over the floor every time they turn the hot water on.

Seriously, though, living on the 3rd floor fucking rocks. I've seen exactly ONE cockroach in 5 months, and it came through the window unit, so it hardly counts.

for me, failure to speak with landlord comes from a combo of my more generalized avoidance-fueled inability to perform mundane tasks like laundry or paying bills, and a strong desire to not have him or anyone else come into my apartment because it is covered in sprawling books, CDs, papers, etc., and while I like it that way just fine, I always feel the need to clear floorspace out of self-consciousness.

It is also good for heat retention and not having anyone walking around above you (assuming the 3rd is the top, as it is for me)

I hurt my ankle/heel on the walk up the stairs at work this morning. Not really sure how. My brother told me it's because I'm old (but he's older than me).

Truth! In fact, the only drawback is that my downstairs neighbors are both law students, and when I have Finn overnight, I constantly worry that his CLOMP-CLOMP-CLOMPing is driving them bonkers/filling them with rage. In fact, it's less "worrying" than pretty much knowing that's the case. I've been the downstairs neighbor plenty of times, and it's especially bad with hardwood floors.

I know that same sense of anxiety, like when I clumsily drop a book on the floor at 2:30 am and just know it woke up the lady who lives right beneath me (then again, she regularly has shouting fits that show little concern for the thin floors, my favorite recent one of which was directed at her cat, and went "Ellie, you fucking CAT!!! why did you [unintelligible] the fucking shower? BAD CAT!").

also, just had my landlord up, and he was confounded by the fact that we can't stop cold air from being fanned into my apartment. within the constraints of the eternal class war between owners and tenants, he's a swell dude, but his "I'll get somebody here today or tomorrow" wasn't entirely thrilling; I don't mind the wait, but I do dislike the undertainty that now hovers over the question of when someone'll suddenly appear to tweak my dial.  guess I won't be able to blast music while showering for the next day.

OH MY GOD WHY WON'T THIS PROJECT DIE??? I've been getting pestered by a fucking client for another fucking estimate on this job for THREE DAYS and consequently, I've been pestering the printer for THREE FUCKING DAYS to get this shit sorted, but for some reason he can't get an estimate back to me within a reasonable time. This fucking thing should have gone to press a MONTH ago and all the fucking client had to do is drag his ass to FedEx and fax his billing information. He dragged his feet on that so we're running into the fucking holidays and everything's running slower, and now he's asking about whether or not we can rush it so he can get it for the holidays. KNOW WHAT MAC? IT'S THE HOLIDAYS FOR EVERYONE ELSE. IF YOU WANTED IT SO FUCKING SOON, YOU SHOULD HAVE MOVED YOUR ASS. I won't believe that it's that fucking hard to find a fax machine within the entire city of New York. New Yorkers? You can confirm this? That there are faxes in the city?

AND HOW FUCKING LONG DOES IT TAKE TO FIGURE OUT WHETHER I HAVE THE JOB OR NOT?!?!?

My goddamn email fucked up a few days ago and now I'm wondering if it's still fucked up and I'm not getting messages.

Remember that finding out whether you have the job is a much more pressing concern for you than your prospective employer, especially given the season.

Yeah, I guess, although they did tell me that nobody wanted to carry this decision through the winter break.

Fuckwits from the insurance company still haven't called me back. You may recall how I said that we pay $300/month for this bullshit nothingness that they offer (and the bloke's employer pays about 3 times that I think). Well, I looked at health cover online for here and it turns out that for under $300/month you could get the absolute best health cover my country can offer. Now to find out whether it applies worlwide, and then to see if we can get the employer to sack the dickheads at BCBSIL.

When I worked at the bagel place we were specifically instructed not to do that. You should go complain.
