My favorite serif: Minion Pro
My favorite sans: Futura

Anyone who uses Papyrus is a sucka, IMO. It's up there with comic sans in terms of level of not only folly but ubiquitousness.

There's this furniture store near my house that has a sign in comic sans. Next time I go past it, I'll take a picture. I can't believe someone out there actually paid thousands to get a lit sign made out of comic sans, but as I was driving through Wisconsin recently, one of the small towns on the way had their official "Welcome to ____" sign in comic sans.

There's also a daycare in Rochester, MN that uses comic sans which is not as unforgivable as a town and a furniture store, but still unforgivable.

Also, Emil Ruder's Typography gets me hard.

And, you know, while we're on all things typographic, what's with telecom companies going all relaxed sans these days?

And now

NECRO.

This is funny: can you tell the difference between these logos originally done in Helvetica from the same logo done in Arial?

It took me a minute, but after looking at like five of them, I was able to pick out the subtle differences.  Neat stuff.

It kind of underscores how well Helvetica is designed compared to Arial. The lowercase e's, s's, and a's as well as the uppercase C's are all more evenly formed in Helvetica and look really awkward in Arial. I guess it just goes to confirm the fact that Arial is a low-budget knockoff of Helvetica. Some of the ones with all capitals were the hardest.

I did better than expected! It's all about parallel lines and lowercase r's and t's.

Hey, you only texted me your top three stupidest fonts, not five.  Do you have any ideas about the final two?

Is it bad to like Impact? I used to make invoices for a web design firm and I liked to use that one because it looked cheap and heavy.

"Cheap and heavy" is certainly how I'd describe it...

Nog, I was in the studio when you asked so those were off the top of my head. It's a tough question to answr because if you look on any freeware fonts site there are thousands of terrible ones

I was surprised by the inclusion of Arial Narrow!

I used it when doing fanzine layouts sometimes. Just for the occasional headline.

I thought maybe it would make our clients nervous and thus more inclined to pay us.

Here's a question from a friend of mine: does the Bad Brains' logo font have a name?  Is it an actual font or just a logo?

it looks handwritten to me, since the Bs and As don't match exactly.  but maybe someone has made a font based on it?

That looks hand made to me too.

Can I talk about my favourite typefaecs?

My favourite serif is hands down 100% Baskerville.  It does bad things to my nether regions and I am NOT kidding about that.  My roommate is a graphic design student and HATES graphic design and is switching to fine art, boy likes to tell her that I am a typophile and try to describe to her what type does to me while she is utterly confused and uncomprehending beyond belief.  But god, I want to know EVERYTHING about Baskerville, straight to Baskerville's maid and mistress Mrs Eaves.  Unuh.

Although I'll admit I spent a lot of time chatting up Garamond BE Italic Swash today, but to be fair it is quite similar to baskerville.  And I'll admit Bodoni has been making me lick my lips for the past few days.

I've always been a serif girl, so I don't have quite a defined desire for sans serif typefaces.  Akzidenz-Grotesk gets the most use out of me.  It's Helvetica's grandmother.  I'm using a lot of Univers lately, especially in terms of using the whole family.  But I love love love DIN Schriften, a guy in my class at this very moment is doing a presentation on some magazine spreads in which he used an awful lot of DIN Schriften and I think I am developing a crush on him because of his use of this sexy typeface.

I use Baskerville a fair amount, actually.

In order to get from my hotel here to the workshop venue, I have to walk past the front gate of a graveyard, which is surrounded by a couple of masons' displays. This is good, because it allows me to find out about the latest fads in the world of gravestones right after breakfast, but the best thing is one stone in one of the displays, which declares "there is more than one font". The font in which it says so is a rather awful one, so I guess that is good news.
