Man, there's even that 5 or 6 episode stretch in S3 where it'll make you think it was the best show evar. "A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving" is better than any TV holiday episode you'd care to name; "They Shoot Gilmores, Don't They" is amazing, managing to be hilarious and just emotionally punishing at the same time. And all the ancillary characters have awesome plotlines around that time:
Lane with pre-OC Adrian Brody, Sookie's getting knocked up, Richard and all the Yale stuff, you're right at that sweet spot re: Luke/Lorelai will they/won't they.
Which is to say, TSKS, I apologize for convincing you to watch Gossip Girl before convincing you to watch Gilmore Girls. And ella... well you get no apology since you keep convincing me to watch all these freaking Canadian shows.

Hey Bluke, did I ever tell you about my friend Greg who got to be an extra in an episode of The Gilmore Girls? It was season 3 or 4, I think...it was the episode where they started working on the Stars Hollow Museum...my friend was sitting in Luke's at the table next to Rory and Lorelai, or across from them, or something. He got to do it as part of a WB program for terminally ill cancer patients. He was 23, I think, had lost his leg the year before to cancer, and had recently found out that it had come back. His story is a tragic one, but man, that was his favorite show, and they gave him the royal treatment. He got a full tour of the set, got to meet all the main characters, and got to have dinner with Alexis Bledel. I honestly think it was probably the best day of his life.

Wow, that's really awesome. I'll have to look over that ep again, I think it's
To Live and Let Diorama
. That's the kind of story you'd never hear about
Grey's Anatomy
or whatever. I'm glad your friend got to do that. Makes me almost wish I'd be out that way to take the Universal tour before they finally tear down the Stars Hollow sets (! they had some BADass production/set design on that show, especially when you consider the shoestring budget).

Which is to say, TSKS, I apologize for convincing you to watch Gossip Girl before convincing you to watch Gilmore Girls.
Coincidentally, I finished season 1 last night. I was really starting to lose interest around disc 4, but the introduction of Georgina Sparks as the drooling hellbeast of psychopathic evil to Blair Waldorf's mere society manipulator helped me a lot with the gradual "woobification" of both Blair and Chuck. I need someone to hate if I'm gonna even spend some of my time not hating both of them. And the Georgina/Serena blackmail plot was pretty insane as well, so I was digging that. The sheer depths of teenage hedonism this show explores are kind of shocking on network tv where characters can't say the word "shit," you know?
I've added Season 2 to my Netflix queue, but it's way back, like around position 60 or so. I'll get there eventually. For now I'm doing season 2 of Chuck and starting on season 1 of Sons Of Anarchy. I'll throw in the Gilmore Girls at some point, but I'm trying to catch up with the current TV run of Chuck as well as fit in Breaking Bad, so it'll probably be a couple of months before I get to it.

Well, as I say, I'm being worn down. Hafta get through season two of
Breaking Bad
first, and then likely season four of
Friday Night Lights
after that (assuming the season is all safely done and ready for me to marathon it when I get there).

You'd pretty much crap your pants about all the amazing pop culture references on Gilmore Girls. In fact, you'll be like: DAMN, I want MY job to be the one throwing out random and somewhat useless albeit interesting musical knowledge on this show. ALSO: Sebastian Bach!

I fell in love with that show at the very end of the pilot, where the camera is pulling back on the tranquil household scene and Lane comes running through the yard out of nowhere, shouting, "I've got the new XTC record!!" Then they put it on the stereo and the picture fades out as they all dance around to "I'm the Man Who Murdered Love."
Awesome.
I also greatly appreciated Grant Lee Buffalo's recurring role as the town troubadour.

And I mean, in addition to all of that, Rory was depicted as a subscriber to Big Takeover (she would carry around an issue of it at least once a season or so). I know this because Jack Rabid thought it was awesome and mentioned it in multiple issues ("guys, Rory Gilmore reads our magazine!").

Gotta say, I find the tossed off cultural references just that, particularly when it comes to Rory's generation. Lorelai's enthusiasm for the Go-Gos and Emily's love of 40s musicals feels way more genuine than the time Rory went to a Distillers' show or the list of influences associated with Lane's band strictly as a matter of reference for Cool Points' sake. Not unlike the OC soundtracks in that regard. That said, the heart of the show consists of Lorelai's relations to Luke, her parents, and the good and quirky townspeople of Stars Hollow. The characters are the kind that are so well-drawn that when they get weird, it rarely seems that it's a lazy premise. The internecine betrayals and romantic fuck-ups don't feel like soap opera. It's a good show, but not at all because of some indie rock bingo or anything.
I don't mean to say that Rory's entirely worthless, either - it's fun when she fucks up and demands a bail-out, for instance. But she also represents a certain kind of wish-fulfillment that I occasionally find odious. Paris is a much more interesting depiction of the smart and pretty girl whose academic success comes at the cost of social and romantic opportunities. Either way, it's a very good show, and I'm a guy who usually can't stand tv dramas.

It was not until this exact moment that I had any idea that Gilmore Girls and Gossip Girl were not the same show.

Soooo...I watched the
Caprica
pilot today and enjoyed the shit out of it. Eric Stoltz was pretty dang good! I'll catch up on the first episode (which aired last night), and then I'll try to follow it from here on out. Gonna be tough, though. What the heck kinda time slot is 9 pm on a Friday night?

And I think Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction. Might've been 8:00, followed by Milennium or something, though.

I've been scared to watch it. One of my friends really really hated it. I don't know. I guess I'll have to watch it.

They're re-airing the first episode (post-pilot) tonight at 1 am. And a few more times throughout the week before Episode 2 arrives Friday night.
I watched the pilot with my pal Thomas (a man of discerning taste) and we both thought it was pretty great. I was really, really impressed, having gone into it expecting a cheap-looking, clearly inferior spin-off type deal.

So I got around to watching the pilot of Caprica. It wasn't bad. I appreciated the miniature Zoe Deschanel girl. I wonder if I can get hm into Battlestar Galactica with this. It's not fair that I've seen so many episodes of Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls and she always refused to watch anything I liked until she broke down and started watching The Wire.

Our DVR is straight gimped. It's been glitching up video for weeks, but usually a hard reset will right it at least for a while. This time I hard reset it and now it'll display 10 seconds of video without sound before just shutting off. Good old TWC.
