Yeah, Tift! I like her because she reminds me a bit of Lori Mckenna, who you may also be familiar with. If not, and you feel compelled to check her out, make sure to avoid her latest album Unglamorous, as she opts for a truly repulsive contemporary country makeover therein.

just grabbed the new Weakerthans live album; don't have much interest in the concert-film DVD that comes with it, but the album has a nice setlist and I'm looking forward to it.

Yet another package from the UK today:

Julian Cope - Interpreter

This is probably the strongest pop album of his career and it came out in 1996, well after his supposed artistic peak. This guy, full of surprises, almost all of them delightful.

Plus, this CD comes in a little flip-top cardboard box and includes a fold-out "all-purpose mythological mind map of the Marlborough Downs & surrounding area."  Very Happy

Damn the Donner Party record is rad.  I only wish I could listen to these songs, you know, outside of my living room.

Dum Dum Girls - I Will Be

I'm looking forward getting to this. I liked the 12" ep on Captured Tracks a lot.

It's really good, if not quite as lo-fi as their previous releases.

I got this yesterday:

Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punks Underdog World Strike

I've been listening to a good deal of Les Negresses Vertes lately, and their obvious influence reminded of how much I'd liked the Gogol Bordello tracks I've heard in the past.

From Phil Elverum's impressive merch table on Thursday:

Mount Eerie Dawn: Winter Journal (book+postcards+CD)

Mount Eerie Wind's Poem

From Arrington de Dionyso's equally impressive merge table a few weeks ago: a plastic 7" + CD (not even sure what they're supposed to be called exactly) with beaufitul and unique artwork. I should take a picture later.

And otherwise received in the past few weeks, from Merge:

Radar Bros. The Illustrated Garden

The Magnetic Fields Holiday

And from the Parenthetical Girls (hand-drawn and numbered with the lead singer's blood, no less!):

Jónsi - Go

I hadn't really intended on picking this up, but it was on sale for $8 at Best Buy, and it just so happened I had $8. Also on sale for $8 was the new Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, which I will likely pick up before the week concludes.

Hoping to hear that some time in the near future but I don't know if I'll be able to, there are so many albums coming out this month that I'm excited about, not sure I can afford them all.

Here is some stuff I've picked up since my last post in this thread.

Oh hey, how is Height? I have not kept up with John Nolan after the last Straylight Run EP only drew my lukewarm receivers.

I recently got:

which are:
Drive-By Truckers - The Big To-Do
Richard Skelton - Landings
the two most recent Elephant Micah albums, Echoer's Intent and Plays the Songs of Bible Birds
and Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson (the last one is still in the mail for me)

I should investigate Stewart Lee - is there an obvious suitable introduction point?

This doesn't really belong here, I guess, but I'll answer it here anywhere, because I'm not sure where else to do it. I've watched in its entirety his 41st Best Stand-Up Ever, Stand-Up Comedian, and Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle, the latter two on DVD, the first one on youtube (so I'm only 95% sure that I indeed got to see the whole thing). The first two are complete stand-up gigs, the last one is a show he did for the BBC, which contains stand-up bits, but also some film sketches. The 41st Best is very good, but it's been a while since I watched it, so I can't very confidently speak for its consistency, but of course if it's still on youtube you have nothing to lose; the second one (which is just 5.49 on play.com!) is lots and lots of fun throughout (I think there was one bit that I didn't care for that much, but really that's minor quibbling) and would be my recommended first purchase (the bonus features, which are sketches from 10 years earlier that he has re-worked for this routine, are kind of awful, but at least make a strong case for the existence of personal and comic development). As for the Comedy Vehicle, has some very funny moments but is overall a bit hit and miss. Though the bonus features, which are conversations between him and Armando Ianucci, of which I've not watched all yet, actually seem more consistently funny than the show itself, and as I said, the show itself has some pretty great moments, so it's not a total loss either, but probably not my recommended starting point.

Good job with Landings!

Also, I apologize for not mentioning this earlier (but your post is an interesting read anyway and will no doubt help others in their quest for an introduction to Stewart Lee), but I, erm, stole both Comedy Vehicle and 41st Stand-Up Ever from the Internet and watched the former in its entirety and about two thirds of the latter over the past few weeks.
My take on the Comedy Vehicle is that pretty much 80% of the regular stand-up is very good. Some of the more repetitive, feverish bits weirdly reminded me of Thomas Bernhard, of all people, albeit (obviously, and who could hold it against him) marginally less biting and funny. I was impressed by the way he uses his physical presence as a sort of weapon, too. 95% of the sketches, however, I could have done without. I thought the better ones were just okay, and some of the worst ones were so tedious that I find myself skipping ahead past them even though they only lasted two or three minutes. Not much to say on 41st Stand-Up Ever, since that has quite a lot of overlap with Comedy Vehicle - pretty good.
My next move will be ordering Stand-Up Comedian, then!

Agreed on most of the sketched, yeah, and also on the repetitive, feverish bits. I found the whole credit crunch show a boring repetition of one mediocre joke (that joke being, haha, people are getting poorer - so, for one thing, only the effects, not the roots of the problem). And in some of the shows, especially the Toilet Book ones, was a bit too much "look at how highbrow I am!" (the "I don't need to read Harry Potter because I've read William Blake" bit was the painful peak.) Didn't think the religion one fully lived up to its potential, and the political correctness one was nice enough, but not as good as the version on 41st Best Stand-Up Ever. The TV one was nice, though I understood exactly none of the references (I had Solomon Grundy around to explain some of them, at least). The comedy one I really enjoyed, though.

(Didn't mean to do a show-by-show discussion when I started writing this post, but when I had tackled nearly all of them, there was no point in stopping anyway.)

Listened to it once and I don't remember a thing about it. I'll have to give it another go around soon.

I bought a song on my phone the other day! It was When You Were Mine by Prince. It's the first piece of music I've purchased in years.

Just got done listening to it again, and quite enjoyed it. I'm hesitant to recommend it if you didn't like the last couple EP's from Straylight Run though, because it is very much in that vein. I think it'd be worth your time to at least check it out though.

Great song either way, but with such heavy rare weight attached to the purchase, you should've gone with Cyndi Lauper's version.

Julian Cope - Black Sheep (2cd)

...so far, my favorite of his recent releases. I was pretty thrilled to find this used at Amazon for $3.99. The next cheapest was $10 more, and I can only guess that the seller meant to charge $13.99 for it. Whatever the case, it finally came and it was still in the plastic! Score.
