It's not much better around here. The two indie stores in Athens are both so poor they can't afford to buy anything new, really. The same fucking records sit in the same fucking bins week after week after week, and it's gotten to the point where I know exactly what I'm going to find when I walk in--and that's never what I'm actually LOOKING FOR. Bummer. All I can really do is special order shit through them, but in 95% of those cases, I can get it cheaper and quicker by ordering it myself, so what's the point?

I mean, there's a Blitzen Trapper record coming out soon, and I'm guessing Wuxtry will have that in stock, so I'll be able to buy that in their store...and Schoolkids will probably get the new Dexateens record in when it comes out. So there's two purchases, but damn. Used to be, I'd walk into one of these places and have to restrain myself from dropping $40 like automatically. It's just not that exciting anymore.

and

Nighthawks at the Diner is an album I have bought on CD twice and lost, twice.  So I am fucking owning it on vinyl now because dammit I cannot lose that thing again.  Probably my favorite Tom Waits.

yes, this is a bad album cover. it's the debut album by a boy calling himself darwin deez and it's what i'd probably describe as "patchy". it comes close to being a perfect one-man indiepop affair with little drum machines and nice melodies and cute lines but is probably actually about half and half ace and rubbish. i'm liking it rather a lot.

"i hope that the last page
of your eight hundred page novel
is missing"

i listened to a bunch of his music on his myspace page because my girl said i'd really like one song called "radar detector" and, sure enough, i do really like that song, and the rest of the stuff sounded interesting enough. i figured if his random myspace stuff was that good then the album was worth a shot; it turns out his random myspace stuff basically is his album. but check out "radar detector", "bad day" and "the bomb song" if you're interested: myspace.com/darwindeez

I don't usually post in this thread but I got a haul in Seattle, so:

CDs (from Easy Street in Queen Anne)
Air Miami: Me. Me. Me.
Germs: (MIA) The Complete Anthology
R. Kelly S/T
Marine Research: Sounds from the Gulf Stream
Mint Condition: Meant to Be Mint
Tsunami: A Brilliant Mistake

LPs (from Bop Street, which is kinda the best, in Ballard)
The Boys S/T
Bobby Brown: King of Stage
Golden Palominos: The Animal Speaks
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with Full Force S/T
Labi Siffre: So Strong
The System: Don't Disturb This Groove
TKA: Louder Than Love

The only thing I actually bought on Record Store Day was also the only new item: DJ Mujava's Township Funk 12"

In today's mail:

Napalm Death - Fear, Emptiness, Despair

This one has been on my mental wishlist for the better part of the past decade, so I finally decided to pick it up when I saw it going used for fifty cents on Amazon.

Salt N Pepa: Very Necessary - $4.99
Spiritualized: Let It Come Down - $9.99

The look on the record store clerk's face when I hand him the two next to each other: Priceless.

Salt N Pepa was awesome.

I can still remember the thrill of hearing "Push It" come on the radio during the bus ride home from school.

I got these yesterday, one from Yourmusic, the other not, you decided which is which:

Kathleen Edwards - Asking for Flowers

Veberna - Into the Pink

During the actual year itself, I found 2008 to be pretty disappointing, musically and otherwise. However, its stock has been gradually improving since, with this Kathleen Edwards album the latest quality discovery from that year. It's still disappointing compared to 2007, but then most years would be.

man i completely forgot that the new the new pornographers album came out today, but i was at target buying some stuff and they had it on display. so i bought it. yep. sounds a lot more immediate than Challengers was, on first blush you know. i really grew to love Challengers but it took some time. this one jumps out a lot more. beyond that... well it sounds like the new pornographers you know. i read tha tthe horn section from the daptones plays on this album, so i was expecting some serious horns, but theyre not really a standout anywhere that i noticed on my first listen.

Was at target earlier today myself self and saw this for only $6.99...

Minus the Bear - Omni

Have they gotten worse with each album since their debut? Possibly. Have they put out anything that I can honestly say I don't like? Not even close.

Got this one because it's more focused on the Rick Rock/Droop-E hyphy tip.  It's pretty awesome thus far.  "Show Me What U Workin' Wit'" has an epic beat - I had to rewind the track before anyone even started rapping so that I could hear it drop again.

I too got this today, also from Target. Once through I already like it more than Challengers, which I gave a fair chance but never really warmed up to. I also got:

The Hold Steady - Heaven is Whenever

I'm surprised to say that I like Together the best of the two. Based solely on each group's previous album, I was looking forward to The Hold Steady significantly more, but have found it a little lacking thus far.

everything that ive read about that new pornographers album so far has singled out Valkyrie In The Roller Disco as being the worst song and out of place, but its probably my favorite song on there at this early date. the harmonies in the hook, i mean come on man thats good shit.

ha, that song was playing as i read this. i was thinking something similar, 'cause i had just read the pfork review, which said, "blah blah blah this song is slow when instead the album needs a jolt of energy!" sure, whatever dude. maybe they didn't want to give the album a jolt right there. maybe they wanted a pretty, slow song.

Received my pre-order of this today, which came with a very nice 7" of catchy Outrageous Cherry covers (I'd never heard of Outrageous Cherry before, so if anyone has some album recommendations, bring them on!). I really liked Challengers, but then again I like absolutely everything Carl Newman has ever done, so, yeah. Just got a ticket to see the band for the first time in Paris in a few weeks too!

Also pre-ordered, received a few days ago, and also liking so far:

Frog Eyes Paul's Tomb: A Triumph

And bought this in Virgin the other day:

Roky Erikson with Okkervil River True Love Cast Out All Evil

And, lastly, couldn't resist checking back to see what Mr Zuydervelt has been doing lately (I haven't received these yet, but they should be in the mailbox tomorrow):

Machinefabriek Daas (featuring Richard Skelton!)

I've long searched for a reasonably priced copy of The Mekons Rock 'n' Roll to no avail. In fact, it seems the prices have gradually increased on used copies--the cheapest on Amazon right now is $20.
