Scout Niblett - The Calcination of Scout Niblett

Thoughts?

I have played it once and I love it.

The new songs do not follow the country folk duets with Will Oldham on This Fool Can Die Now, they are stripped and raw.  I can't quite tell from the limited liner notes but I wouldn't be shocked to hear that Emma was the only performer on the album.

It is an haunting album.  I think I might listen to it again next.

my pops got himself that ridiculous miles davis box set for xmas this year... except it had a manufacturing defect whereby the glue to some of the jackets was prone to becoming unglued. i dunno, it didn't look too bad to me when i saw his copy over the holidays.

anyhow they sent him another one due to the problem, and i have scored the defected one as a freebie.

i enjoy me some miles but i think it's gonna take years to get through 71 discs of material. that's a good problem to have though 

very, very jealous.

for my part this week i picked up some rap records from shai faithe's top ten of the decade, the new four tet album, the new silver mt zion album on irresistable 2x10"/CD/assorted pamphletry, and a bunch of boomkat music whose names i've already forgotten (i think something by seasons (pre-din) from last year, luminarium by tape and a couple of other things that sounded nice. and something by some band called wormsblood that sounded interesting. january was the month of buying old videogames i'll probably not have time to play for a while, but so far february is definitely the month of buying more new records than i'll have time to enjoy. and of being poor and hungry, apparently, because i didn't check my balance before ordering.

The latter of which I bought digitally from Amazon after amassing enough MP3 Credit to pay for it. Actually paying for MP3s is still pretty unseemly to me.

i still don't think i've paid for an MP3. amazon game me £3 MP3 credit for buying some cds in december so i spent it on - fittingly given my previous post - in a silent way by miles davis for £1.74 and that epic tune from the movie sunshine. but yeah, just can't quite bring myself to hand over money. i did buy some downloaded videogames recently because they were ridiculously cheap, mind, so maybe i'm starting to slide down that slippery slope of acceptance. worrying.

I'm finding this to be true too! A lot of places that used to sell them for $8-10 apiece if they were in good condition now sell them for $5 each or thereabouts. Hey, more for me.

It does sound incredibly lonely and remote - I think I read the other day that another drummer played most of the drum parts, though. The gist of what I saying in another thread is that after I discovered her live recently (she played most of the then-unknown Calcination), I checked out some of the albums and thought that they were good, but not nearly as good as the live show, and then I heard this and went "well, that's definitely more like it!"

i hope so too! i expect to enjoy that silkworm album, at any rate. i picked up developer a long time ago (in the same used section i scored at this weekend) and loved the hell out of that record. i was excited to learn that it is not generally a highly regarded silkworm album, because that meant there was a lot more to hear. but since then i haven't come across anything, apart from an old 7 inch (which was alright but nowhere near as good as anything on developer).

i've only listened to the neurosis albums thus far though. i'm not sure why i held off on their older stuff so long.

Well, it's highly regarded by me...Developer is probably #3 on my Silkworm list (Italian Platinum is #1). It's the album that got me into the band in the first place. It's a good bit slower and darker than most of their stuff, though.

The TFUL 282 album is kind of a tough one to love. It took me coming back to it years after hearing it for the first time to finally get into it.

Listening to The Sebadoh now. Better than I remembered. Definitely does not deserve the sorry reputation it has. (I think part of that reputation has to do with Sebadoh's live show around that time, which was pretty abysmal.)

Update: Parts of this record even sound a bit like Nirvana!

Aside from the songs being just some of their best, I have a secondary reason for really liking that album - I grew up on the river that Cuyahoga is named for.  So, a special place for me etc.
