Aside from the songs being just some of their best, I have a secondary reason for really liking that album - I grew up on the river that
Cuyahoga
is named for. So, a special place for me etc.
Really? Wow, though I suppose I knew it was a real river, it just has such a mythical sound to me it's hard to believe it's someone else's River Adur (my river!), as it were.
As well as that song, I love
I Believe, These Days
and
Begin the Begin
. They have the lyrical flow and minor key melodicism of
Reckoning
and
Murmur
, but also a kind of breakneck out-of-controlledness that I love.

So I got the Lifter Puller book and download card.
And what the fuck is this? I have to download each song individually? What this fuck is this shit?

And they're all 160 kbps. It's a goddamn dream diminished.
Still worth it.

That doesn't make this any less of a pain in the ass--they're not even arranged by album--I'm just dumping them one by fucking one into a LFTR PLLR folder to sort through later.

I have some stuff on mail order, but it turns out that done sate the need. So I stopped by the Rotate This, who were out of the new Spoon but had these:
Vampire Weekend -
Contra
Owen Pallett -
Heartland

I like that how inconvenient his name change was: the spine of the record lists the record as being by Final Fantasy, but the sticker stuck to the front attributes it to Owen Pallett (as do the actual vinyl slabs).

Okay, yes, this is a highly concentrated amount of awesome. The book is pretty cool too.

Oh hey, for those in the know--now that I got this stuff, is there anything they left out of this Lifter Puller discog that I might still need to track down? It's the self-titled, The Entertainment & Arts, Half-Dead and Dynamite, Fiestas + Fiascos, and Slips Backwards. Do I still need Soft Rock?

Nope!
Slips Backwards
functions just as
Soft Rock
's run of b-sides and singles did. There is, however, one song missing from both compilations: "Bitchy Christmas."

Yeah, I bought it. You surprised?
So far, the Jeff Bridges tracks are pretty good! It's recognizably him, sure enough, but his voice works well in this context, and he's not just reading lines. And you've also got great stuff here by Buck Owens, The Louvin Brothers, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Townes Van Zandt, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Ryan Bingham (
), among others. T. Bone Burnett has got a good thing going here lately with the soundtracking. I've got
Cold Mountain
and
O Brother Where Art Thou?
, and both have survived numerous CD purges that made lesser soundtracks disappear in a hurry.
Walk the Line
felt like a stretch, what with all the note-for-note celebrity Cash covers, but maybe I'll try
All the King's Men
.

Shit, the Colin Farrell tracks are even better! What the hell is up? Colin Farrell singing country music! Convincingly!

It's the only Kath Bloom album I've heard, but I quite like it. Her label has a few free downloads from the album on their site:
http://www.caldoverderecords.com/
.
Albums acquired this week:
Nathan - Key Principles
The House of Love
And I went out yesterday, with the intention of picking up one of the new releases I was moderately interested in (Yeasayer, Massive Attack, Hot Chip, Sade), but instead ended up with this:
Eric B. & Rakim - Paid In Full
I do believe I made the right decision.

So much so that I'll probably end up shelling out another $20~ for the Legacy Edition which comes out in...5 days. Not all Legacy Editions are worth the money, but the second disc on this one contains 11 non-album bonus tracks, and that's pretty significant.

I used to have this CD and liked it a lot but now only have the case for some reason. I miss it.
Spacemen 3 - Performance
Vinyl reissue. Choiceness!

Also I really don't know anything about Tindersticks except that they had a really sappy song called Travelling Light that I super love.
