Same for me.  There are certain artists (Bowie, Beck, Bjork, Radiohead come to mind) that I don't even bother with after a certain point, as I am happy with the already-extant part of their catalogue and find it very difficult to get excited about anything "new" from them.
Bowie's album Heathen was quite good. Reality had some good songs ("New Killer Star," particularly) but wasn't great the whole way through.
Beck has shaken off his sad-sack phase.  He now sounds like a man trying to sound like early Beck.
Radiohead has In Rainbows.  There are very few albums in the last ten years that are superior.
Bjork was great through Medulla, but Volta has problems - there seems to be a serious disconnect between her and the backing tracks for most of it.  Except for "Innocence," really.

I didn't dislike In Rainbows, but it never ended up becoming an album that I went back to.  Same thing with all the Flaming Lips stuff from Yoshimi... on.

I do love Medúlla, though.  More than most people I've spoken to about it, I think.

On the post-prime Bowie note, though, Tonight is a lot less terrible than it is generally regarded (although it does have its dorky to downright awful moments). Therefore I am now playing Tonight.

Yeah I kind of have a soft spot for that album too, despite its occasional goofiness.

Fruit Bats - Singing Joy To The World

this album took a while to really grab me, but it has its hooks in now and is rapidly ascending the standings amongst its fruit bat album brethren. the lyrics on this song in particular get me, i dunno.

Man, if I'm honest, I'll admit to believing that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" medley is one of the best songs of my generation. I played it for Finn on the way home from school today and ended up driving around and around the block until it was done, lump firmly lodged in my throat. It's a beautiful song, man, whatever movie or commercial has used it for nefarious purposes.

Dude should've done a whole album of standards in that style. It would've been brilliant.

If you haven't heard it for some crazy ass reason, please: http://drop.io/LPTJshares

After I had my fill of that song, I remembered the RoyBiggins rendition of "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon," so I had to spin that next.

That's the good stuff, Brian.

Really digging the new Scout Niblett. Just found out she's playing Union Pool in a couple weeks, too!

Hey Look Does Real Gangsta Shit: Commercial Gangsta Rap

This is a three-disc mix of commercial rap from 2000-2007. It's seriously wonderful.

Do people like Dark Dark Dark here?  I've been listening to their new EP that they're streaming from their website (https://brightbrightbright.com/)

I think it's quite good, if you're into a vocals up front/plinking instrumentation kind of thing.  Also, if RavingLunatic still reads the forums, there's a lovely Elephant Micah cover on it as well ("Wild Goose Chase").  How's that for sweetening the pot?

I've always liked Los Lobos, but I've always hated this album cover. For that reason, I've always avoided what most critics claim to be their masterpiece. Finally listening today.

Pretty damn good, yeah, but it doesn't top their last record, The Town & The City.

I kinda dig that cover, but I've never heard that album, I really ought to.

Really liking this Chris Knox tribute. I'm trying to listen to everything fairly, but I definitely find myself vastly preferring the tracks by artists whose voices I immediately recognize (Mangum/Callahan/Gandalfs/Oldham/etc.). I do think there's a lot of subsequent-blossoming potential with the lesser-knowns though, since the songs themselves are quite lovely (except I don't really like Boh Runga's "Not Given Lightly," maybe because the punked-up J Church version is so dear to me).

That Boh Runga version of Not Given Lightly is bloody awful. I don’t think I’ve even made it all the way through. A lot of people were confused that she of all people got given that song to cover (or even appeared on the album at all for that matter).

What the hell, Drive-By Truckers? How are you so remarkably consistent and awesome?

I just threw on Stay Positive, and while I know it's a minority position, I'm pretty certain this is my favorite Hold Steady album--it's certainly the only one I've had any real desire to hear in the past two years.

psyched for the DBT album, though I'll wait till it comes out.

Their first two albums are half excellent (particularly "Technology" and "Production City"), half passable-good. They have a new one coming out soon, which will hopefully alter the ratio favorably. Trivially, it's the same day (March 16) and from the same label (ATO) as the new Drive-By Truckers.

The buzz down here is that this is the make-or-break record for them. The marketing push has been enormous (i.e. gift cards at Borders with their logo printed on them!).

Incidentally, Night Nurses practices across the street from The Whigs. When we head out onto the porch for a break, we can occasionally hear them banging away.
