Well, it does have the worst album art.

30 Helens agree.

I dunno, that Elvira-lookin woman up front's pretty hot.  But yeah, that's a terrible excuse for an album cover.

Especially for him. Julian Cope record covers are generally pretty sweet.

That was my first thought.

Anyone else watching the new Kids in the Hall show?

It's called Death Comes to Town. I think it's supposed to be 8 episodes total, I've seen about half but it might be finished its run (I'm grabbing them as I need them). It's a long-form thing about a small town and, well, Death goes there. It's not fantastic, but it's not that bad. There have been a few very funny bits, anyways.

I mean, seriously, they couldn't even put together one consistently great album before veering off into awfulness. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, for example, put out 2 or 3 great records before becoming a joke, and they were able to do that because they stuck with one style and played to their strengths for a while. But OZD couldn't settle on a style at all, not even for a year or two. They stubbornly mixed their strengths with their weaknesses, so all you can do is cherry-pick the albums for the good stuff. Which is what I did this morning (thankfully, their latest best-of comp leaned heavily on the country-rock side).

Found this old post in the archives and it saves me the trouble of writing it out all over again. So frustrating and yet so worthwhile at the same time!

davy I don't know if you've completely moved on past your Fishbone phase but you might want to check out the Fishbone 101: Nuttmeggosaurus Fossil Fuelin' the Fonkay 2-disc compilation.  Disc 1 is pretty much standard best-of stuff but disc 2 has some pretty essential B-sides and demos.  Here is a drop containing a couple of them as a sample:

Hey thanks, I actually do own Fishbone 101--it's the only thing I've ever owned by them. Unfortunately, I tossed Disc 2 at some point. My guess is that I probably needed the 2CD jewel case for something else. I'll check out those tracks you dropped.

You people who mildly dissuaded me from diving deeper into Julian Cope's discography are crazy. Pretty much everything I've heard so far--outside of his first album, maybe--has been fucking aces.

That's my favorite of his, and seems to be pretty underrated by just about everyone.

Shit man, "Wheelbarrow Man" may be my new favorite Julian Cope tune. The hooks just don't stop! People don't talk about how fuckin catchy JC's music can be!

Try as I have over the years, I've never been able to improve my opinion of em. Just seem so sterile and lifeless to me.

While I can imagine criticisms, "sterile" seems particularly odd to me.  Something like "Blind" is definitely dirty, and the vocal arrangements in general tend to strongly point out that you are listening to the sound of vibrating meat.

Harvey Milk - The Singles

it's pretty funny to think of HM as a singles band.

Some really delicate, pretty melodies scattered throughout. Excellent guest spots, driving electronic beats. Good stuff. No duds yet. Assuming this disc is going to be like $5 at Best Buy this week, I might have to pick it up.

Yes, I haven't listened to the album in something like two years, but "Try, Try, Try" still pops into my head on a fairly regular basis.

Listening to TVOTR still.  I could really use some new music that isn't rap - like rock or indie sorts - but I'm not sure where to start given that I was aggressively bored by basically everything that Pitchfork and the blogosphere was really into last year (and slightly less in 08 as well).

The Dutchess & The Duke - She's the Dutchess, He's the Duke
It's been a little while since I put this on. Was my best of '08 if I remember correctly. Did anyone else here get into this? I seem to remember Davy liking it maybe?
Anyway, it still stands up. I'm pretty sure I'll still be listening to this album 30 years from now.
