One of these things is not like the other things, one of these things is not like the other things...

Well, actually, the punch-knives would be similarly useless and flashy.

So, my sister-in-law posted this thrift-store thing on FB tonight:

Who is that next to Guinan?  It took me a second but I think I've placed everybody else.

For a second I read step sister instead of sister in law and was really bewildered.

I started randomly watching streaming episodes of TNG lately when I was feeling too exhausted to do anything else in the evening, and it's been fun. Are there any particular episodes that I should be watching? Or is there any reason I should be watching them in sequence?

A quick glance over the episode list on Wikipedia tells me that these are the ones I've watched over the last couple of months:
s1: Encounter at Farpoint, Hide and Q
s2: Q who
s3: Deja Q, Yesterday's Enterprise
s4: Qpid
s5: Darmok, The Inner Light
s6: Tapestry

Basically, I started out by watching a bunch of Q episodes until I realised that what I really wanted was episodes that had as much Picard and as little of most of the rest of the staff as possible. "The Inner Light" was my favourite so far.

Definitely watch "The Best of Both Worlds" which isn't as Picard-centric as you might like, but is awesome and is necessary for the followup episode "Family" which will kick your ass with its Picard-centricity.  Though there is a Worf subplot too.

THe Worf subplot is fantastic, there will be no disappointments.

There's a previous episode that will shed light on the Worf subplot too, "Sins of the Father," which is a Worf episode but has plenty of hot hot Klingon-speaking Picard action too.

Additionally there is a Wesley subplot but all you need to know to get that one is that Wesley is a little bitch.

At work the other day, one of my trainees, who happened to be a cute girl, had a Picard bookmark. I was all, holy cow, you have a Picard bookmark! You're a TNG fan! She said, yes, yes I am. I asked, so is Picard your favorite? She replied, most definitely. Then I said, As long as it's not Wesley Crusher and she gave me a really hurt look. Two days later she quit, though it was probably unrelated.

My ladyfriend just watched this last night, and did not enjoy the episode.  She was like, "What's the deal with Worf's family?" and I tried to explain all about Klingon politics to her for a minute or so before I realized I was boring myself.  Then I got all ecited and started talking real fast about Alexander in DS9.

alex!  Chain of Command, Parts I and II!  Good Picard and Cardassian drama!

GQ: When did you get into Star Trek?

Mila Kunis: I got into it in my late teens—18, 19, 20. Something like that. I got into it later than most people. But let's not talk about it in the past tense. I'm still a Star Trek fan. You never stop being one. Let me give you my rundown of the series in order of most favorite to least favorite.

GQ: I definitely have my answer to this. Let's hear it.

Mila Kunis: Okay. You should know this list is an ongoing argument between Seth MacFarlane and myself. But I have it: The Next Generation; the original series; then Voyager—

GQ: Okay, you're already wrong.

Mila Kunis: Fuck. You and I are in trouble already. This always happens with Star Trek fans. After Voyager, then I have Deep Space Nine. Then last is Enterprise.

I gotta say, I watched part of the Voyager pilot on Netflix last week and while it wasn't very good, the smirking, sneering gonzo-like performance of the dude who plays Thomas Paris was so unbelievably bad it achieved a kind of grandeur. I don't remember him being like that in the few episodes of Voyager I've seen, so I'm assuming they toned him down for the rest of the series.

Seriously man! Lest we forget, Voyager's the show with an episode where they found an old Ford pickup truck floating in space then tuned its AM radio to a distress beacon that led them to Amelia Earhart asleep in a cryo chamber (end of act one)

Haven't seen "Threshold" but I just looked up the wiki article for it:
Quote
The writing staff were dissatisfied with the quality of the episode, to the point that Brannon Braga called it a "royal, steaming stinker"

I know what I'll be watching on Netflix tomorrow

It is literally the most bizarre thing in the entire world of Star Trek, and I'm including Beard On Beard in that assessment.

This sounds incredibly awesome. Perhaps you should rethink your stance on this one. Or at least your argument.

Maybe. But I'd counter-argue and say that Voyager itself, as a concept, is pretty awesome. 'Til you actually watch it.

By which I mean, the writers gave themselves so much freedom by dropping a starship in a completely unknown part of the galaxy. They had narrative cart blanche, man! And look how they squandered it!

Yeah, I was completely infuriated with Voyager not only because of its mild badness, but because of the INCREDIBLE amount of potential that they squandered on formulaic triteness.

Two crews who hate each other and think the other is morally bankrupt!  Stranded together!  Will tensions run high? Will war crimes trials happen? Will machiavellian power-games underlie every episode?

oh no they pretty much decide to all be a model starfleet crew, ok cool

wait we miss klingongs lets make a race thats basically just them again, ok cool
