So I'm finally on Facebook, as most of you who follow me on Twitter know. (Come find me, my Facebook site is the same as my Twitter name.) And aside from being thrilled to be taking part in the collective disease that is social networking and reconnecting with people that can hopefully help me move some work, I have a couple questions:

1. What's the difference between the news feed and the wall?

2. What's up with the little "send to all my friends" button at the bottom of the little iLike music/youtube app? Does that add some kind of extra level of pestering to the post?

3. Are there any other worthwhile apps I should know about (keeping in mind that I don't give a fuck about games or "What kind of animal are you?" kind of shit)?

I've been chattering a lot on Twitter and Facebook lately because I'm chained to the computer all day and it's a way for me to take a little break now and then. Lately I've been posting tiny record reviews which is kind of fun, but I'm trying not to be the guy who posts every time he takes a shit, so I'm trying to figure out how to post frequently but not be up in people's faces about it.

1. News feed is what everyone's doing, from the very banal to the, well, slightly less banal. The wall is just for posting stuff on specific people's pages. If a friend of yours posts something to a mutual friend's wall it may show up on your news feed, which is weird and stalkerish.

2. Don't know. Probably yes.

3. Probably not, and the notifications from them get annoying after awhile. If they're worthwhile you'll probably find them eventually.

Wrt posting, my only advice is don't post anything you wouldn't yell out in a megaphone at a party where everyone you knew was there. That also applies to Twitter, but even more to Facebook, cos do you really want a teacher from primary school to know that your boyfriend sucks and reminds you of a quote from a Smashing Pumpkins song? But then that's just me.

filters!  by setting up groups of your friends, you can control who gets what information, and whose information you see.

Yeah! Find me too, d_p! I may post banal status updates, but I don't play annoying games that will send you shit.

d_p, I just added you and then realized that my real name does not bear any resemblance to any of the names you probably know me by.  So uh, if you got a request from somebody that is also friends with other lptj people, that was probably me.

I suggest making liberal use of filters, and block Farmville and Mafia Wars as soon as they show up in your feed. And don't feel bad about blocking someone from your feed if they do a buttload of quizzes and sends hearts, hugs, and smiles.

I can't really think of any useful applications. There are about three games I like to play (but very infrequently), I have my goodreads account and my etsy account linked to my page, and I run a fan page for my cat. None of that is particularly.. useful.

Mmmkay, thanks for the info peeps. I leveraged the power of Anne's friends list so I should be friends with most of you. And if I dinna find you yet or you can't find me, there's always the power of the PM.

Who are you on Twitter? Why am I not following you? I DEMAND ANSWERS!

I follow you on Twitter, so it wasn't that much of a shock. Go social networking!

You leveraged my list and yet I was rather confused at being added by a Simpsons character. Ah well.

Yeah, being a perfectionist and a photographer (and trying to take my social networking a little more seriously as a professional tool in addition to being a social thing), making a good avatar is like a two-hour task for me. I gotta take a shower, set up some lighting, figure out what to wear, unpack the camera, retouch he zits, etc. etc. etc. But enough people have have told me "OH... YOU'RE THE SIMPSONS GUY... Are they even still on the air?" since really getting into it that it's pretty obvious that I need to do something a little closer to reality.

less being dicks about the babies themselves, and more about the method of food delivery ;-)

I would add more homies if I knew real names.  As it is I just tend to let the passing of time do the work.

jm, I just added you. or I hope it's you. I think we've even briefly met IRL when DCDave was in NYC last summer, but I'm not totally sure.

and clare, yeah, that is some asinine policy there.

Word up!  Yeah, I think we met extremely briefly.  Where "met" = "I think I was really drunk by the time you came around but I remember someone saying your name".

just got a friend req from somebody on fb, mutual friends tells me it must be one of you guys so I went ahead and accepted which is weird, since half the time I'll ignore friend reqs from people I actually know in real life
