watching a tv show week to week rather than a whole season in one sitting changes the whole experience, and not in a good way.
that said, i liked the first ep aside from the mexican dudes whose characters seem pretty forced. but i guess we'll see if that builds up.

Yeah, the whole mexico bit was weird.
I hope Jane's father stays in the show, I keep watching him and going IT'S Q. I can't imagine what he would do but I like his character.
And the kids in the assembly are so fucking weird. Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I'm pretty sure the highschools I've been in wouldn't be that mournful, at least would be making morbid jokes. Laughing about shit is a coping strategy. I know I probably would have been like FUCK YEAH at walt's rant, but I guess I'm pretty heartless. And why is the principal so hot? Damn I can't deal with this highschool. Everyone is so clean!
Lol @ "jesus what you got in there cinderblocks" etc. And walt should have told skylar he was doing PORN.
... I felt bad about this thread being empty. Damn that baby is cute. And skylar is hot but I hate her.
I haven't slept yet - i spent all yesterday / last night watching season 2 of breaking bad (seen it before though) and then I went to class and some appointments and shit.
WILL WALT GO FOR THE 3 MIL?
i like his beard.

I thought this episode was really fantastic except for the bits with the twin Mexican cartel assassins. I liked how the Mexico scenes were filmed, and the pre-title card bit was genuinely strange and wonderful. The last scene, with a dozen senseless murders, felt like pure cynical sensationalism.
The level of Walt's degradation continues to be amazing, somehow. I love how thoroughly he's been able to rationalize away even his largest sins. Watching him attempt to BBQ the money on some ill-conceived moral grounds was brilliant; maybe my favorite moment in the episode.
Pinkman continues to bore me; I kind of wish we could redo the first three seasons with a better actor. He's also horrible on Big Love, but at least isn't required to do anything except earnestly impart a little bit of plot over there.
Kind of hoping we won't see Odenkirk again, as he was really distracting and tonally wrong last season. Hope to see more of Mr. Pollos Hermanos, and think we will.
Overall I'd give it an A-! Great start to the season.

Staring into middle distance with eyes glazed over as I skim past this thread to make the "NEW" sign go away; haven't seen it yet.

I hear Odenkirk was used extensively in the pre-S3 promo material, so he'll definitely be back (not that I mind personally, although I understand people's reservations about him in this show)

Well I really like Odenkirk himself, I just think he's wrong here and ill-used. The weakest thing about BB, apart from its tendency to indulge in the kind of crass, slickly-produced sensationalism that's typical of a cable drama, has always been the casting. Excepting Cranston, of course.

Really liked it! I agree that the truck crescendo did seem to be a bit of crass over-the-top-ness (LOOK HOW BADASS THESE GUYS ARE -- OH MAN, THEY SHOT THE DUDE A SECOND TIME!), but I s'pose I'm willing to forgive that as a bit of "let's try to reel in new viewers" excitement. Eh.
Otherwise, I quite liked the Mexican scenes. I coulda watched an hour of that, honestly. The crawling, the keyring on the goat... I loved all that.
I will say, in re: Ashley's post about the assembly: that's sort of how I remember assemblies being in high school. Some people joke or roll their eyes among their friends, but they're not the ones who grab the mic and talk about Oh The Collective Trauma. Although the "Let's keep it secular" line did strike me as a little hammy.
Also, as far as John DeLancie goes: somewhere, a while back, I was reading someone on the internet saying "Anything John De Lancie's in, I just pretend it's Q, secretly on vacation." This technique continues to be rewarding!

I definitely don't know how I feel about the stuff with the assassin twins. It looked super cool, but it kind of seemed like just a bunch of cool shots happening one after the other. Why were they crawling? Why did they need to change out of their suits? Why'd they have to ditch their car? Why'd they have to kill all those people?
Otherwise though, pretty solid. When Walt told Skylar that he's been selling meth, holy shit. And the assembly scene was so perfectly uncomfortable. I'd like to rewatch the episode, though, 'cause I don't really have my thoughts straight.

after this weeks episode the stuff with the mexicans is a little clearer. hank said something about one of the passengers finding out something they weren't supposed to know, so i guess the skulls on their shoes, the only thing they didn't ditch, is the mark of their cartel or whatever.

Yeah. I didn't really get into some of the first episode, so I was a bit worried about a potential slight dip in quality this season, but now I'm definitely reassured.

Some of my favorite moments in the episode:
- "Down means off"
- the pool scene
- all the Walt singing scenes

Yeah, I can't believe you guys were down on the Cousins! Who cares if it's well-tread ground, that 'splsion shot was awesome! No CG! And in general I thought the pacing of the first two episodes was excellent. Both times I got so wrapped up in what Walt was doing that I completely forgot about the Cousins. "Here's how fucked-up Walt is for 45 minutes! Oh, by the way here's something MUCH WORSE that you probably forgot about."
Plus, Uncle Tio!
The only thing I'm not so crazy about is the Jesse stuff. Not that it's bad (the rehab scene in the premiere especially was really really good), just that he's outside the main story right now, and I think the show's generally at it's best when it's Walt and Jesse interacting.

I didn't care so much for the rehab scene, but I loved Jesse and his parents this week. Different strokes, etc.

Agree w/ this
The Cousins stuff still feels a bit style over substance to me
But fuck this episode was great.

Pizza on the roof!
Man, part of me wishes that that was just an odd take of Bryan Cranston throwing the pizza box, and then they decided to write it into the rest of the episode.
