I have a new place to live!
It's a little more expensive (but not tons more expensive), but it's a fair whack bigger. I don't care too much about the size, but it's got some nice big windows, hardwood floors, (shared) back yard for my BBQ. Main floor of an old brick house maybe three blocks south of my current address. So basically exactly what I want in a place.
I am happy about this.

I'm renting an apartment in Barcelona that looks pretty sweet. Sidenote, has anyone been to Barcelona?

Yeah, I was there for five or six days back in 2005. It is ridiculously beautiful. Everyone is attractive and there are adorable tiny dogs everywhere.

That sounds quite excellent! Good to hear you didn't end up having to go for some crappy basement option with no sunlight whatsoever.

Yes, I have high hopes. I was a little worried, because it's so expensive to get above ground in this town. Seriously, the last place I looked at was on the third floor of a house, and you had to walk through two floors of the landlord's residence to get to it. And then down through their kitchen and den to do laundry. And that was $990.
Which is to say I feel Ashley's Toronto househunting pain. But more I feel really relieved that I found a place I think I'll be happy in and can kind of almost afford.

My neighbor in Michigan always used to drink that. I always wondered what it was like.

You mean you forced three kids to wait until you were out of sight to put a smaller kid in a garbage can? I think there's a merit badge for that.

I was hoping the little kid was gonna run away, but he just retreated up a set of nearby stairs; I assume that if the older kids wanted to grab him after that, they would've at least had to deal with him kicking them at face-level. I dunno how spry all parties might have been, though.

Also the situation went from certain-garbage-can to maybe-garbage-can, so that's an improvement.

I didn't save any children this weekend, but I nonetheless had a good one! The weather was beautiful, so I napped in the backyard a little bit. I'm also working on translating this essay by Eisenstein, cuz I need it for a paper I'm working on... so far, my translation is just the worst, but I'm pretty sure he's at least 10% to blame, what with his writing being all elliptical and cryptic and all those neologisms... anyhow, I am somewhat pleased with myself.

As always in that kind of situation, too, I have no idea how the usual dynamic is among the kids; I got the sense that they were all kinda friends-ish? I tried to play it like an "Aw, dudes, what are you thinking, don't do that" kind of thing more than a "HOW DARE YOU" scary-adult-yelling thing, in hopes that there would be a more slow-burn realization that there are better things to do than put a small guy in a grabage can. But without any background on the normal social behaviors and history of the four kids, I wasn't entirely sure how what kind of psycho/social leverage to use.
XPOST with hannah; yay at napping and Eisenstein!

One of the best weekends ever just happened. Friday I got home from work and Tony informed me that his parents were bringing over one of those portable firepit things that they didn't use anymore. Sweet. So some dudes came over and we sat around the bonfire all night and drank some beers and had some laughs and grilled some steaks. Saturday we rallied a few troops to go camping just north of town. Again there was bonfire and barbecuing. We drank a bunch of whiskey, had a bunch of laughs, found a football, set a camera up with a long exposure and drew giant wieners with flashlights, slept in tents, toasted some twinkies over the bonfire and ate them (DELICIOUS HOLY CRAP), and so on. This morning we packed up camp, came back to the homestead for the usual Sunday breakfast, which featured a whole bunch of bacon and some other good stuff. Then it was on to Sunday baseball at the park. We had a great turnout, fielded two full teams with subs, some friends to fill the bleachers (as well as some folks just spending Sunday at the park who sat down to watch). We rocked the first game pretty quick and decided we had time to make it a doubleheader. Had a between-game barbecue, naturally, and then played game 2. And man, what a grand time it was. I'm not sure anything is better than pickup baseball games.
