I've been feeling really shitty and sluggish all week and I'm trying to figure out if it's just that I've been trying to detox a bit or if I have some kind of low-grade illness. Every so often, I try to quit coffee for 4-5 days to lose my tolerance and those days are always a festival of headaches and no energy, whether I step down or just quit entirely.

extremely minor impotent grouse of the day:

I hate when, in a transcription (usually song lyrics, but also applies to anything originally spoken or sung that is then written down), people put commas where commas don't belong.

when this happens, the solution is to read it in christopher walken's voice. suddenly, the commas fit perfectly.

My brother's girlfriend was at a bachelorette party over the weekend. At night they went to a bar, where some guy started trying to shove his way into their group. She kept her back to him to try to keep him out. He did not like that and poured a beer on her. When she turned around, he punched her in the face. It's on tape, there are a lot of witnesses, and he got arrested right away. My brother says she may have a broken nose, and has two black eyes and terrible swelling. Grrgh argh.

wow--that is crazy.  how could someone do that?  I hope she is going to be OK.

Yes please - we're jsut coming down with something here... :-(

I realize this is going to sound hippy dippy, but man it SO works for me, it's like magic.

it's simple if you can find the main ingredient... not sure how widely available it is outside the US. it's basically just a gargle of golden seal (Hydrastis Canadensis) powder. (people often pair echinacea with golden seal, but I didn't find the echinacea did anything)

here golden seal is widely available in capsules at health food stores.  I bought one bottle years ago and haven't used it up yet.  I pry a capsule open, dump a small amount of powder (maybe 1/10 of a pill) in a glass of water, mix, and gargle a few times a day.  it's quite bitter, but it gets rid of sore throats for me so fast I don't care--I used to have them all the time, but now I hardly notice them because the minute my throat starts to tickle I gargle and it's gone.  also helps sores, cuts, etc.

you could add a little honey, salt, etc., but I just use it straight.  mostly because I'm lazy.

Someone else said "it's only funny when it happens to Snooki." It did happen at the Jersey shore, but it was Long Beach Island, not Seaside.

Apparently since some time last night, the universe has decreed that every attempt I make to sleep must be thwarted in some way. Consequentely, I am in the most hateful mood. And I have much coherent work to attempt today.

d_p, you and I both.  I couldn't sleep Friday night because I had been sick and spent basically 3 days sleeping, so last night I was so excited to go to bed.  About an hour later, my cell phone was ringing and ringing and ringing.  It was my room mate's boyfriend telling me they'd broken up, she was talking about killing herself, and he was about to drop her off at our house.  I woke up her brother, but he was totally wasted, and in the time it took me to assure the downstairs neighbor that there was nothing to be concerned about she'd gotten a knife and was sitting in the bathroom rubbing it up and down her wrist, though not with enough pressure to draw blood.  Her brother went back to bed when I went in the bathroom and took the knife away and ended up sitting with her until 5:30 am when the boyfriend called, they talked and he agreed to come over.  It took him about another hour to get here, then I finally got to go to sleep.  Except I am almost incapable of sleeping after 11 anymore, so I really still didn't get enough sleep.

Yeah, that sounds bad.

Perhaps a bit more mundane are my own sleep-related annoyances:
I currently have a friend visiting from Austria and we spent the weekend up in Utrecht/Amsterdam. I was feeling a bit tired and sluggish all weekend, so much so that I went to bed at 11 last night because I just needed to lie down. Then I couldn't fall asleep for hours and hours, even though it was really mostly very quiet. I guess I must have fallen asleep around 3 am - still not particularly deep sleep, but at least I slept off and on for the next couple of hours.
At 6 am, however, there was some chattering heard outside the window, and it just got more and more with time. Around quarter past six, I looked out and saw that a whole fucking lot of people, who looked to be in their early 20s and were wearing backpacks, were standing still just opposite of the hostel. My first thought was that, since they were backpackers, they must somehow be here for the hostel - though it was weird, seeing as even the people that I could see from the angle that my top bunk allowed, were definitely more than the rather modestly-sized hostel would be able to host, nevermind the fact that the hostel wouldn't open its doors until 2 hours later. Soon, some guy with a really loud voice started giving them orders in the most arrogant, condescending way - one of them, ironically, was to be quiet because people were sleeping here (I am sure that at this point nobody nearby was still asleep, it was so fucking noisy, and this guy's own contributions certainly didn't help!) He told them to form a queue in alphabetical order, berating them for their uselessness when they didn't immediately form an orderly line. His favourite phrase was "How difficult can this be?" Also, in every fucking sentence he referred to them as something that sounded like "nobeeten" or "noffiten" - even without having heard that word before, the way he was repeating it and his enunciation made it very clear that he was trying to express that they were all just a uniform mass, devoid of any individuality, to him, and that he stood far, far above them.
At some point, I realised that what he was saying could probably be spelled "novieten", and would then probably mean "novices" - and suddenly I realised exactly what the fuck must be going on here: the so-called 'ontgroening' ('de-greening') of a student association (in the frat/sorority sense, though this one was clearly a mixed-sex one). I knew that this tradition basically consists in debasing and humiliating the new members before declaring them full members so that they can debase and humiliate the next generation in the next years (which explained the condescending shouting guy), and I also knew that they usually involve an introduction camp of a few days or so somewhere (which explained the backpacks), so it all kind of made sense. Anyway, they stayed out there for about two hours (though it did gradually become a bit quieter - some of my hostel roommates even managed to go back to sleep, but I didn't), and I couldn't help feeling a bit gleeful when it started pissing down at around half past seven. Around 8am, they finally disappeared into a building next door.

I later chatted a bit with one of the youth hostel guys, who confirmed my suspicions about the 'ontgroening' and explained that the joke was basically that all the first-years were told to be there at 6am, but the organisation (except for the shouting guy, I suppose) didn't show up until 8am, so everyone was left out in the street for two hours, making sure that the whole street didn't get any rest. Fun.

Anyway, I guess I ended up getting about 2 hours of sleep all night, and since I was already feeling not-so-great to begin with, I decided I simply wasn't up to spending another day in Amsterdam: I told my friend to go there on his own and took a train back down to Maastricht this morning. I suppose a day of rest (and a bit of work) isn't the worst thing in the light of my condition the last few days anyway, but still, thanks so much, student association assholes, for ruining my plans!

That's quite an essay there, sorry. My hatred for student associations runs deep, and just the sight of a bunch of people wearing matching poloshirts with one of those logos is enough to dampen my mood a little. When it actually comes to losing sleep because of these fuckwits and their twisted ideas of how to treat your fellow human beings, I guess I can get a little carried away.

Some little hoodlum almost stole my Netflix return today! I put the disc in the envelope and set it on top of the row of mailboxes in my building, like I always do, and when I came downstairs to check the mail an hour later, I found the red envelope ripped into pieces in the trash can! I thought, "God damn! Somebody stole it!" but then I saw that the DVD sleeve was also in the trash can and the DVD was inside it.

Guess that asshole doesn't like Mad Men.

Thanks! The best part is that I went to the website of that student association, and they tell us at length about how their association is a place that allows you to grow in your faith and strengthen your relationship with God. Yeah, I could tell.
