That sounds kind of like our night in Manchester, except it was just drunk people leaving clubs and congregating outside our hotel window (which wouldn't close all the way) to take pictures of themselves. And later, more of them yelling in the halls and stairwells of the hotel (which had very thin walls).

Once in Kansas City a very large number of Raiders fans stayed in the same hotel as me. This hotel had an atrium that was open from the ground floor all the way to the penthouse. I have never encountered a more obnoxious group of people. But I was working then, and it would have been much more obnoxious had I instead been trying to enjoy a pleasant weekend out of town.
Sorry, alex!

When I got hacked, I was actually able to get back into my gmail account fairly quickly (having like two or three other email accounts did help). But getting my Facebook account took for-fucking-ever.

I feel for everyone who's ever had their shit hacked, but if you're not using
alternating caps and numbers
in there you're pretty much asking for it.

Overall, I'm fairly certain this was pretty innocuous. I got lucky in that I tried to log in almost immediately after it happened and Google had shut down my account for emailing everyone that's ever sent me mail about cheap pills. So I recovered the account and proceeded to spend the next few hours scanning for viruses (OSX lives up to its reputation) and changing passwords with the help of
http://strongpasswordgenerator.com/
. So now I have a sheet of paper with a bunch of incomprehensible passwords on it that I have to memorize. Ugh.
And Pollo's right, it's entirely my fault for having an old, weak password. It wasn't as dumb as "password" or my cat's name or something, but it was short and only had letters. As far as I can tell, it was just a combination of bad luck and brute forcing. Live/learn, etc.

I don't think it's that hard to make up a strong password that makes some kind of kooky sense to you, but wouldn't make any sense to anyone else on earth.

Does leetspeak protect against dictionary attacks? Have the hackers added it to their dictionaries?

Just pretend you're 8 years old and writing in CODE.
I use a word from a language I made up when I was a child, every second letter is replaced with a number in the A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, etc code.
I get hit by nostalgia every time I have to think about what password goes where.

Actually, one of the strategies I saw was to pick something easy to type and then just move one character to the left or right on the keyboard. Right now, I'm remembering one of my passwords pretty well because it's a letter, a number, then a string that sort of looks like "bling", followed by another string that vaguely resembles "gold". None of it actually spells anything, but that's how I remember it. Basically, I've stolen P-diddy's password.

I usually just choose something I'll remember (text) and sub in some digits for letters, but it's pretty strong I reckon...(and I just changed my gmail password, thanks d_p)

I used to use a password that was the first letter of each word in a goofy sentence (that would have made no sense to anyone else), with a couple of numbers substituted for numberish words.

This. Also paswords based on keyboard layout, but with alternating caps: 9iKmnJU7, for example. Making the effort to strengthen your passwords make a hell of a lot of sense.

word. I will not reveal the system of my current passwords, but they are getting a bit stale, so I should probably make new ones.
do you remember when there weren't any passwords? there weren't any ATM PINs? the only thing we had to remember was phone numbers. man, I guess I am old.

I put one of two numbers in mine. I use 279 because it comes from a story me and Grace had on tape growing up, or 69 because I am 12 years old.

No AC and no working bathrooms at work today so far, and today is forecasted to have a high of 90°. ARGGGGHHHH. They are working on both problems currently, but this is not fun, and my inclination to drink lots of cool beverages to deal with the heat is a no go thanks to not being able to pee until my shift ends in an hour and a half.
I HATE SUMMER.

I have no problem memorizing (and retaining) phone numbers, 11 digit library card numbers and whatnot, but for some reason, I can only remember 4-6 digit PINs by the shape they make on the keypad. This backfired once when I decided the shape should be an "x," thus having no obvious start or endpoint, nor was I sure that the 5 should be pressed only once altogether or on each "stroke."
In passwords, I originally put in numbers and symbols that seem like a reasonable facsimile for alphabet characters from a word or phrase, but I usually end up memorizing them because of the way my fingers move rather than thinking "oh, @$$ spells ass" or what have you. So I guess pollo's methods make sense to me.

PROTIP: if you can't hang with reading a bunch of Aristotle, maybe you shouldn't be pursuing a Master's in Rhetoric. I mean, no one should be pursuing a Master's in Rhetoric, but what the fuck are you doing here?
