I must admit I thought there'd be more interest in the sewage pipe.

Were you sitting on a ledge with your legs swingin' free? I pretty much imagined a scene in completeness and I was real satisfied with this image so I didn't think to ask follow-up questions.

Whereas I imagined you floating underneath it and reaching up to somehow snag it on a free edge as you went past, but yes, also happy with my mental image...

I'm going to keep the major part of how I thought it went. But the part where you are sitting in the front of a boat wanting to drink a beer that you hold in your hand except you're too busy with the boat stuff - that's fun. Then you get a break and sat up on a ledge with your pants rolled up and took sips.

It's everybody's favorite story.

I looked up that river and also the North Avenue Bridge on google maps and that is the brownest body of water I've seen since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I thought it was a dirt road you took to get to the cable company when you need to drop off your dvr before moving out or something. The south is a different place! Should I check it out? I've fallen in love with central Missouri is the south the next step? I wish this was the drunk thread.

PS alex you can only ruin my images if you make things up quicker than my brain forgets its own ideas. That takes stealth or bad ambition.

I circled the sewage pipe. All that white stuff there, those are the rapids.

And there was a little bit of sitting and leg-swinging, so your image was not entirely off. Unfortunately, one of our crew was afraid of heights and wouldn't step out onto the pipe, and plus it stank pretty bad. We didn't linger.

Turns out, I do love the south. I've spent 95% of my life here, but it was during the other 5% that I realized how much I loved it. Of course, I'm fortunate enough to live in Athens, so it's easier for me to say that.

You should definitely take a roadtrip down here. One weird little town after another.

A few years back my mom did a big summer road trip through the south, and said it was one of the most beautiful (set of) places she's ever been. She did a thing where she slept in a tent for a few days, then spent a night in a bed and breakfast or nice hotel converted from some old mansion. I gather these are fairly common in that general region. She also brought me back spice rubs or hot sauce from all the different places she visited, some in styrofoam cups with the lids scotch-taped on, from random barbecue shacks and smokehouses recommended by local folks. I hope to make a similar trip when HT is older.

Urgh. Maybe it's due to never getting enough sleep, or post-period syndrome of some kind, but everyone is annoying or boring me lately. Well not everyone, but many. Makes me feel like a bitch. Maybe I am.

Lack of sleep will do that. I pretty much do everything possible to ensure I have enough time to sleep because being deprived of sleep can ruin an entire day or week for me. The only time I've gotten seriously sick in the past couple years was the day after I had to do an overnight at work. The next night I had excruciating stomach pain and later vomited like crazy. Never would've happened if I'd gotten my normal sleep.

Speaking of unhealthy water sources in Athens, a 30,000 sq. ft. chemical plant in the industrial district east of downtown exploded on Wednesday night. The plant had been manufacturing porta-potty chemicals. Over a million gallons of water were poured on the fire in a futile effort to extinguish it. Instead, this water mixed with the spilled chemicals and entered run-off creeks throughout the area.

Here is a scan of the back of REM's first record, Murmur:

The trestle in the photo has become an important landmark in Athens. The following photograph was taken from the top of the trestle, looking down at the creek below:

Your eyes do not deceive you. Here are some more images:

The image above shows the polluted creek entering the North Oconee River, which I paddled down just a few days ago. It's the major source of water in the area, for both wildlife and people. We are sort of screwed right now, I guess.

My spammy e-mail account (y'know, not including my full name, and given out freely to various websites and such) gets an unusually huge amount of junk mail as of two days ago, almost all of them of the "bounced message" variety. This is bothersome, both because I cannot seem to be able to train the spam filter into recognising these as spam, and because it probably means that people out there are receiving spam that pretends to come from my e-mail address.

That sucks - I can't say I have been a victim so far though. The levels of spam I get both on my Gmail and work address have increased dramatically over the past couple of weeks, too - most of them are recognized as spam, but more troublesomely, Gmail has also taken to identifying perfectly legit emails from perfectly legit people as spam. I do look at my spam folder rather carefully on a regular basis anyway, luckily, but I almost missed out on some relatively important emails because of this.

Trivial and unrelated to my life, but people who would rather sit in a 100 degree house and whine than call up the power company to get the bill put on a regular payment system deserve not being able to use central air. Because central air is for GROWN UPS.

I know some people who would rather whine to me than call up the power company like an adult and get their bill leveled out so they can afford to use air conditioning. Kind of doubly annoying since there are plenty of people who legitimately cannot afford air conditioning instead of these people who just need to spend 45 minutes on hold with the power company to get the bill adjusted. I don't really care that they're hot and miserable, but people who can help themselves and chose not to because it would break up their L4D schedule drives me nuts.

Re: Central Air/being a Grown Up, this is my first full summer having the stuff in many years, and I prefer to leave it set to 82 and keep a couple windows open and spin the ceiling fans instead. My power bill (which, granted, runs a couple months behind) has shrunk considerably. Childish behavior on my part.

Nah, dude. This isn't about voluntarily saving energy or comparing how hot our houses are. In fact, it isn't even about air conditioning. I just know some people who keep waiting for their mom to fix shit and complaining when it doesn't get fixed.

Thing is, if they eased up on the xbox for awhile, they could probably power the a/c. Same goes for CFLs and turning lights off when you leave the room.

Maybe they would complain more about not being able to play xbox or see what was going on in every room whenever if they sacrificed those things for the AC. They just got different values, man.

My apartment is a wreck and Japanese giant hornets are patrolling the sidewalk.

This is the largest species of hornet in the world. Its venom contains an enzyme capable of dissolving human flesh. Nice.
