My Vaio laptop crashed out of the effin' blue today. I took it out on the porch this morning and was in the middle of sending an email to the band when I noticed that the wi-fi had lost connectivity. I went inside and checked the router--which was working fine--and restarted my laptop. It wouldn't shut down. So I turned it off and back on, and then it couldn't find Windows.

Second time this has happened. The last time was about a year ago exactly and necessitated a hard drive transplant. The thing was under warranty then. It's not anymore.

I've got the recovery discs from that last crash, so I can probably salvage the thing, but I'm worried about my data. I tried a data rescue in Recovery Mode before I left for work, but the progress bar said 390 hours, so I'm not optimistic. Fuck, man.

... Aristotle is very readable, what the fuck?

he was the one who defined love as the satisfaction of an ancient desire, right? and got into the nature of philia and that?

Sitting here in my office, minding my own business, getting some work done, and my sister txts me.

Sis: Can you get us a hotel room [for the wedding]? You were getting rooms for ppl right?

Me: Not as such. There are rooms in a block at [hotel X] but all the ones at [hotel Y] are gone. Couldn't get any comp rooms cuz it's parents weekend [at the university].

Sis: OH so you CAN'T get any rooms is what your saying? Thought you said you could/were at some point? Anyway. That kinda sucks, I'm not really trying to stay at phils

Me: There are rooms available in a block at [hotel X], reserved for the wedding. There are still quite a few open. They're $100/night.

Sis: Uh yeah not really ting to pay $100 for a night in Athens. I guess we'll figure it out.

Me: (mentally) YOU FUCKING DO THAT. SORRY I COULDN'T GET A FREE ROOM FOR YOU AND YARDDOG OR WHATEVER THE FUCK THE RECENTLY DE-DREADED UNEMPLOYED FOLLOWER OF THE STRING CHEESE INCIDENT YOU'RE CURRENTLY CANDYFLIPPING WITH IS CALLED. YOU DIDN'T SEEM TO HAVE ANY TROUBLE FINDING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO SPEND TO GO TO FUCKING BURNING MAN; MAYBE YOU SHOULD'VE SAVED A COUPLE HUNDO FOR A "NIGHT IN ATHENS"--BUT THEN AGAIN IT'S ONLY THE MARRIAGE OF YOUR ONLY SIBLING.

And now I'm so pissed off I can't concentrate.

Sorry you have been having trouble with your sister pollo. I am definitely going to add the term 'candyflipping' to my vocabulary though because it is too excellent not to steal.

"If you have money for cigarettes, you shouldn't have food stamps." (it was something privilege-y and ridonks like that)

making it a "like" on your facespace profile was ridiculous. trying to defend the sentiment when i call you out for possible classism, white privilege, etc was also fucking ridiculous. you aren't privileged? i suppose the three tattoos you JUST GOT and the trip you JUST TOOK and the fact that you dine out EVERY DAY is just something everyone has the ability to do, right? the fact that you got immediately defensive tells me you have no idea how to have a constructive conversation with differing opinions, and since it is impossible to argue with someone who has it in their mind that they are not wrong, i let it go. when i really wanted to go HULK SMASH on you. your friend posting a few days later saying "hey ____, I got your back on this" really just sent me over. Also? if I have $5 for a sixer of shitty beer (you can't use food stamps for alcohol or smokes) HOW IS THAT YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS?! People who have food assistance aren't deranged d-bags trying to take all your tax dollars (for the most part) they are people WHO NEED FUCKING ASSISTANCE SO THEY DO NOT COMMIT CRIME TO PROVIDE FOR THEMSELVES OR THEIR FAMILY.

I GOT YOUR BACK??? ON WHAT? THE FACT THAT YOU ARE A CLASSIST ASSHOLE? AND YOUR FRIEND HAS NO FUCKING IDEA WHAT SHE IS TALKING ABOUT? COME AND FUCKING SAY THAT TO MY FACE YOU PIECE OF SHIT. I will take you to the reservation and gamble my EBT funds.

Ahem. Sorry. Maybe this should go in the anonymous letter thread, but I am more angroyed than wanting to be anonymous. Or whatever. Also this person got a thee gandalfs tattoo a week after they saw mine so.. yeah. SWF much?

i mean i hear statements of that sort pretty regularly, and while it's true they usually come from privileged people who have never been in a situation like that, i don't think they're entirely without basis. if my friend claims to have so little money that the government subsidises his necessities, it seems kind of a cop out when he spends $40~ per day on cigarettes. it doesn't bother me or anything, he prolly just needs to learn to prioritise.

i don't fully agree with what i just said, but devil's advocate &c.

If you're receiving income aid from the NZ government, you aren't earning enough to spend $40 a day on anything. As in, you'd have at most $100-$150 a week left for everything else if you did that. So I doubt that your estimate is accurate.

Also, how do you know what the situation is, when you see someone on food stamps smoking? Maybe they bummed the cigarette. Maybe that's their indulgence because it relieves stress and functions as anti-depressant, and so it is worth prioritizing, especially since in the US anyway, since a doctor and getting medication prescribed can be expensive and difficult. Maybe that person is addicted (well really, that's practically a guarantee), and it's not like quitting is easy, and being under financial stress I'm sure doesn't make it easier to quit. And maybe it's worthwhile recognizing that people's lives are complex, and we can either choose to help them or not, but if we do, it doesn't and can't mean that we then own their lives to police over as we see fit and make sure they meet expectations we don't have for anyone else.

A friend of mine on facebook posted a link to this, and I think it does a better job discussing the issue than I ever will: http://babyslime.livejournal.com/613418.html

This is all not to say that everyone shouldn't be quitting, because they should. But yeah, extending someone public support does not give you carte blanche to diminish their personal agency with regards to what they put in their bodies, in much the same way that your driving on a public road doesn't entitle anyone to tell you you're not allowed to eat fried foods.

Your claim is "this person doesn't exist"? He does. Whether it's because he has contract work, so is technically unemployed for part of the year, because his job pays him under the table, because his money goes through someone else, or because he has enough money that he doesn't need to work, is irrelevant. If this is (and I think it is) a discussion on whether all beneficiaries need the money, the answer is definitely no.

the hood i live in has been under rapid gentrification for the last four years or so and now there are 500,000 dollar condos all over my street. my friends and i all live in a house that i think was built in the 1920's and is a bit of an eyesore in compairison (i actually do not agree, but i would think this to be the general opinion of most squares). it's split up into a quad. with the central stairway as sort of a foyer. there are people constantly coming and going, lots of bands live here or practice here, etc. we throw big parties or shows every two months or so, but nothing too gnarly. anyway, this older lady has been yelling shit at us from her benz all the time. she lives on the street, a few houses down. now the city keeps coming by and checking shit out. now they're coming this week sometime to check for "habitability." fucking BOLLOCKS, yo!

You get what I mean though right?  LB of cheap ground beef and some buns costs what 4 bucks?  Same thing for hamburger helper? Not necessarily healthy but beats the hell outta Wendy's.  I get that grocery store placement, not being homeless, and a lot of other stuff are prohibitive but I'm just sayin' that if you can buy more, healthier food for the same costs as feeding a couple people with fast food.

Yeah, that's exactly what I mean.  But if you don't have a car to make it to the closest grocery store... or if there aren't any banks in your neighborhood, but there is that check cashing place that gets five percent of your pay... or like what's going on in Atlanta right now where the public transit (privately owned...figure that one out) is cutting bus routes, making it harder for people to get to work and school...

man, what were we talking about?
