Isner, 50-49. Approaching the 9-hour mark.

Isner is fading fast, but he's still in there. 51-51.

39-39 right now. I wanted to wait until the match was over to make dinner, but I'm afraid I'll starve.

And I was waiting to start my homework, but I'm afraid it will never get done.

Isner's gotta win it here...he's got some momentum. 53-52.

You'd have to put your money on Mahut to win this, but Isner keeps winning the points he needs to stay in it. And the standard of tennis is really quite high, extraordinarily so in the context: Isner in particular in putting in a few tired strokes and sub-standard serves, but he's still got a mean forehand in him.

ah, my bad...i've been tuning it in and out at work...still, even if there have been 2 break points, that's pretty incredible over 113 games

edit: it looks like there have been 5 break points in the 5th set...2 for Mahut and 3 for Isner...Mahut has only had 3 break points in the entire match...Isner's serve is ferocious

Mahut is sprinting and diving in the 117th game of the 5th set.  I have no idea where his energy is coming from.

Mahut still looks like he's got more in the tank, but it seems like he's starting to score fewer points.

As dramatic as this epic match is, isn't it actually evidence that men's tennis is broken? If it's that difficult to break the other guy's serve, it's not much of a game, is it?

I mean, sure, if this happened all the time, but this is a freak occurrence,  I think, and I'd be hesitant to draw too many conclusions on the state of the game from this single match.

Isner is/was looking tired, Mahut less so. Mahut has almost no body fat! Don't know what's going on, 'cause I cant stream it right now, the TV coverage ended and the news reports are all about whether Australia is about to get its first female Prime Minister. Who the hell cares about that?

Yeah, but it seems like the extreme case that highlights the general problem. Too many service winners in men's tennis.

Aces are like strikeouts. I don't know if strikeouts are fascist, as Bull Durham said, but they are boring.

I tend to agree with Dumbfish that the game would be more interesting and entertaining if they made the serve box narrower or something. The impression I get is that when you get two evenly matched players together, too often they win something like 90% or more of the points they serve on. And there are too many aces, which are pretty boring.

They've gone off for the end of the day! It's going to go into a third day! I haven't seen endurance play a part in the game like this outside of test cricket.
