Told my boss that I was waiting for an offer letter from another company during my annual review. Uncomfortable, but better to bring up now than wait a week and then tell him once I get it?

Man, I'm really looking forward to seeing this current job prospect through (tomorrow's the last day they're accepting applications, so I should hear something about an interview soon...I hope), but I am definitely not looking forward to confronting my current boss about it. Ergh.

seriously, don't sweat it, davy. when I jumped ship at my old job for my new one--a transition very roughly analogous to the shift you're facing in terms of pay/stability/etc.--I knew it would mean a costly, time-consuming replacement search at the old job, but my boss still responded with an enthused--this is near-verbatim--"good for you, that is awesome! congrats! [five second pause] well, fuck, now the shit hits the fan here. but that's not on you, this is great news!"

or actually, an even more on-point example: when I became a finalist for this gig, I told my old boss (who had also known I was on the market, and then knew I was interviewing in the preliminary round). his response was to send out energetically supportive emails, unbidden, about what a great employee and colleague I was to three people he knew at my current place of employment--which without question contributed substantively to me getting the gig.
it sounds like your boss is pretty humane, and that's what a humane boss does.

With my boss he's probably going to try and talk me out of it.

I often fantasize about being able to tell my boss I've gotten a better offer. He'd say, 'Ok.' and walk away.

I really do like my current boss. We get along great and she's easy to talk to, always fair, etc. But I BUSTED MY ASS to get this job, and she knows it. I really wanted to make an impact here, stick around until I could get a full-time position, work for my community in my community and all that--and now the idea of leaving after only 5 or 6 months, and just after getting a raise. I can't help feeling like an ass.
But also, health insurance + new car.

Yeah. Still don't know anything about compensation.

You got nothing to apologize for, my man. You're doing what's best for yourself, and that's how this works. Anyone who doesn't get that is being a dick.
Unnecessary kicker to that argument which ought to destroy the penile strawmen mentioned above: you're also doing what's best for Finn.

I say nope. Pay respect via an in-person appearance if at ALL possible.

I know something about compensation. It will be more than I make now.

That is interesting! I, for one, would welcome your move to an area where I frequently visit. Especially since your new ladyfriend ostensibly is cool with you having friends who have internet connections and whatnot.

Plus, you'll get to hang out with Blake at some point if you live in Boston, which is definite good times.

I would not be moving. The aim is to be up there 2 days a week and have an office in DC. Essentially the job is working in strategic planning and federal services for a smallish biotech start-up that wants to drastically alter "personalized medicine." I just bought my place so moving isn't really an option and Boston is fucking COLD.

The doctor who quit last week who I was sad about in the today thread or whatever just showed up, because he had some outstanding paperwork that he needed to sign so I could file it (psychiatric progress note dictation things) and he has Fridays off at his new job. And now I am sad! Because I think this is turning into the thing when someone leaves and you are both like "OH WE WILL TOTALLY HANG OUT ALL THE TIME" and one of the people is lying! He works ten hour days at the other job and has a baby and no time for anything ever! And I still miss him! And it is really dumb.
