I watched The Surrogates yesterday, against my better judgment. It was actually not so bad. Well, some things about it were pretty bad. The writing was bad. The plot wasn't great. But some of the concepts it introduced were pretty compelling. The scene where Bruce Willis's character, in the flesh, appeals to his wife's surrogate, bemoaning their disintegrating relationship--that was fairly poignant.

fuck, the surrogates was so terrible. shit had pretty much the weakest setup for a sci fi thing ive seen in a long while, and then it told a stupid story on top of it. i was kinda sad that i wasted time watching such a piece of crap after it was over.

Well, that's what I expected, anyway. I guess if you go in with low-enough expectations, you're bound to find something to like.

tonights the night. PIRANHA 3D! whos with me?

pitching it to my ladyfriend right now; she's usually up for anything, so I think it'll be a green light.

did you see the 1978 Corman one just came out on DVD, and Humanoids from the Deep too? makes me wish I were watching more movies these days.
I saw the original Piranha years ago. I loved it for a) its terrible use of stock footage, b) the hilarious swarm-of-locusts sound effect during the use of stock footage, c) everything else. I would probably see the 3D one if someone cajoled me even a little bit.

see it! its going to be so incredible.

some review quotes

Quote
80,000 gallons of fake blood, extreme violence, gore, terribly cheesy dialogue, legit scares, high tension, porn stars and a wet T-shirt contest all in 3D. Are you sold yet?

Quote
You know when someone keeps repeating the same word over and over again, it eventually loses all meaning?

Piranha 3D does that, but with boobs.

Boobs, a-bouncing to the left. Boobs, a-jiggling to the right. Boobs, rammed in your face. Boobs, boobs, boobs, boobs, boobs, boobs.

By the film's end, even the basic concept of boobs seems completely baffling.

They're like wibbling flesh jellies with little pointy hats on top. What do they do? Why do they exist? Who knows? Or cares?

Quote
Mere words cannot describe how awesomely gnarly Piranha 3D is, how hugely entertaining, and how urgently you must get yourself to the theatre to see it. Like, now.

Quote
May actually surpass its 80’s Velveeta inspirations — a film so absurdly gratuitous that it somehow becomes weirdly pure.

Quote
A non-stop buzz machine that runs on boobs and blood, offering everything you'd ever want to see in a movie whose logline is 'Thousands of prehistoric piranha attack Spring Breakers.'

Quote
Delivering all sorts of bloody goodness, Piranha is Alex Aja's best film since High Tension... It's damn fun, and off the hook bloody.

also, if you were to come see it in Philly on, say, Saturday, M makes a mean limoncello which we will surely be passing back and forth in a flask. just sayin'.

(also, not a big fan of the director because I never got over my distaste for High Tension, but I'm all for redemption narratives, so this is his chance).

yeah, that was pretty damn fun. I'd have a hard time articulating a cogent critique because we were obliterated on gin & tonics to the point of near-catatonia, and then after buying tickets for a group of underage girls we wound up blazing up in the theater parking lot all high-school-like, such that we both blacked out repeatedly during the movie, but I think we got the idea, and we weren't the worst off in the crowd, either--I think that award would go to the dude who shrieked in apparently unfeigned horror "not the titties! no, god, not the titties . . . oooooooohhhhh SHIT!!!"

so, yeah, the movie was precisely what one would expect, and I think wasted is the proper way to experience it. guess it's my #2 for 2010 so far, after Trash Humpers, but there's not much competition yet.

Somebody needs to send me some pot brownies so I can go see that movie. It sounds awesome, but I'll be damned if I'm going to see it sober.

I saw "Once Upon A Time In The West" last night.  Well, part of it.  I fell asleep part way through but the first half was pretty cool even though there was a ton of staring.  I never gave westerns, especially spaghetti westerns, the time of day before.  This one was so interesting though!  There's a part after a bunch of people get blown away except for one and you're waiting to see what is gonna happen and all these guys in long trench coats (dusters) come out from behind the shrubs and it is so eerie and suspenseful.  There's also this crazy old man at the saloon who gets some great close ups.

Hey so I was just reading this book about movies which I keep in the bathroom, and has anyone here ever seen Nightmare Alley? (1947, starring Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell). It sounds bleak as all get out, and pretty awesome. I had never heard of it before and am pretty curious. Tyrone Power's a carny who, through cruelly tricking various women, becomes a successful nightclub mind-reader, but then everything goes wrong and his bad ways catch up to him and he has to get a job as a carnival geek.

That's when I do when I feel bad for failing to live up to the world's expectations and want to disappear.

Speaking of which, it's a holiday weekend and I wasn't really planning on leaving the house, maybe I should walk to the local theater... Oh no, they're showing North by Northwest for free outdoors. You can't hide from shame under the open sky!!!

I love this film dearly, but I think someone here whose opinion I respect (wanna say lastclearchance, but not sure) doesn't share my enthusiasm.

On a weirdly related note, I never watch movies anymore, but I squeezed in a few Jess Franco films recently, one of which was his 1969 Marquis de Sade's Justine, starring none other than Tyrone Power's daughter Romina, who, while not exactly talented, does a pretty good job of playing nubile and innocent. Also Jack Palance shows up drunk off his ass and quite reflecting it, staggering through one of the most WTF performances of all time. The film was bad, but reminded me of the sort of spectatorial bricolage I so love about watching Franco films, picking out the scattered little pieces of amazingness in the midst of two mostly dull hours.

Have any of you guys seen the documentary Murder on a Sunday Morning?  Absolutely fantastic and eye opening.  This kid is luck he got such a badass public defender.

Here is the link to the first part. After you watch it you can keep watching by clicking M2, M3, M4 and etc sequentially in the "Suggestions" box to the right.  Really gripping stuff.

I remember watching Blue for the first time and seeing that opening shot (view of a car moving down the road from its axle, I think?) and knowing exactly what I wanted out of film forever.

Yeah, I found it not really "good" but pretty fucking entertaining.  I tend to have a high tolerance for bad if the entertainment value is sufficient.

I have both parts of the Mesrine movie in HD, just waiting for a good opportunity to watch 'em. That'll probably come in like December.

Word. My main disappointment was that the previews made it look like Desperado II, which it wasn't.

I still say Desperado was one of the coolest films of the 90s.

Nice! I really liked the first one, but never made it around to the other. Anyway, next year when you've seen it let me know how it is.

Yeah, part of my enjoyment with movies like Machete is that they happen to have a number of people who are just a fucking joy to watch onscreen.
