Finally saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo tonight -- I liked it, but it didn't really hold a candle to the book, which I just finished reading a week or two ago.

I watched about ten minutes of A Single Man before realizing it was the absolute LAST movie that I needed to be watching in my current state of mind. Right back into the red Netflix envelope it went.

I am considering going to see Inception tomorrow, because a friend told me it was awesome, and several newspapers and magazines I tend to trust also told me it was awesome. I am worried I'll end up hating it and being miserable, though, since I hated Memento and have ever since been very suspicious about Nolan.

I saw Tamara Drewe the other day and that was quite inane and boring, except for one scene that lasted a few seconds towards the end. And I just saw Copacabana now, and that was better. But this summer is pretty depressing movie-wise, there's almost nothing I feel like watching.

A glimmer of light towards the end of August, though: Weerasethakul is coming to Strasbourg!

Also, I thought it was hilarious the other day that two of the three previews that were shown before Tamara Drewe had the exact same soundtrack: a cover of Radiohead's "Creep" sung by a choir of schoolgirls. The culprits were "The Social Network" and "Un Poison Violent".

I saw most of Inception last night (had to leave before the end to get my bus Sad) and thanks to LPTJ and one other friend telling me it wasn't that awesome I liked it. It didn't really stay with me after, but the premise is so awesome. I want to see the end! Gargh.

So. Inception was horrible, even replacing The Pleasure Of Being Robbed as my personal worst film of this century.

You are officially the first person I've heard say that!

I have not yet seen the film.

It's probably the worst kind of bad movie, extremely pretentious and ponderous with absolutely no visual idea or interesting characters, not a hint of a sense of playfulness or humor, or anything that makes a movie in the least bit worthwhile. Nothing, at all. I'm baffled that people actually enjoy this. I would probably have enjoyed Sex and the fucking City more.

Did you just close your eyes every time Joseph Gordon-Levitt appeared in a sharp suit?

I am willing to concede that two hours and twenty-five minutes of Joseph Gordon-Lewitt standing around in a sharp suit, Akerman style maybe, would have been better than the actual movie.

And come to think of it, I liked the avalanche towards the end! I thought to myself "that's a nice-looking avalanche". But I think that's it.

What I would like is a progression of Joseph Gordon-Levitt walking into rooms with progressively fancier suits.  Each time he walks in, DiCaprio and Page and everyone gasp, and say, "Wow!  What a sharp suit!"  And then he smiles and says, "But maybe this suit is... JUST A DREAM?" and then everyone wakes up in another room, sitting on sofas, and they talk about what a great dream it was, and what a nice suit it was.  Then JGL walks in wearing an even better suit, and maybe a few animals come in, too.  This repeats for 90 minutes or so, and at the end, it culminates with him wearing full mecha armor, flanked by wooly mammoths who breathe fire.  And Ellen Page says, "Now I MUST be dreaming!" and JGL turns to the camera and winks and says, "OR ARE YOU?"

Now that is entertainment!

Have people been talking about The Kids Are Alright on here yet? I was expecting to be annoyed by it, but I ended up really liking it overall, although I also expect the general lptj verdict to be negative for some reason. The only thing that bothered me really though was Julianne Moore's accent—I can't tell if it was actually annoying/weird in the film or if I just now associate her voice with that horrendous Boston accent, which would be a shame, but otherwise, I loved it. And in case the whole lesbian "let's process this" stuff and the hyper analytical couple-talk or just about anything else seems unrealistic, from my experience anyway, it's pretty hilariously spot-on.

It's on my list of movies I would go to see if I had the time/childcare. I may yet get to see it! You probably expect lptj to hate it overall because it's a girl's movie and lptj is pretty blokey...actually I just said that without thinking about it...

Jesus, goldfinger is a bad movie. Just unrelentingly stupid. Aggressively stupid. Great rape scene, though.

Lovely quote succession. Also Gregory if I had money I would pay to see your movie made. Or maybe put it on stage so JGL could come wander among the audience and we could touch the suits etc.

Watching Public Enemies at the moment. Thus far it's pretty good, but I like Johnny Depp and Michael Mann. Its a really obviously digital for a period film. Ultra-sharp images, no grain, smooth motion, but overall flawless execution. The sound design is killer, though. Lots of flying bullets, good immersive sound.

I liked it a lot! I'm not sure it really stuck with me, much, though--in general I don't think it had much to say. It was really well done, though, with a lot of really great acting, and it was tender and heartfelt at the right times and oh yeah I totally want to bone Mark Ruffalo.
