yesterday I poked around in an amazing abandoned power plant north of NYC:

view south from the roof (you can see Manhattan in the distance):

I'm too lazy to put all the links in, but the photo set is here, and a brief blog write up here (along with some neon pics).  it was AMAZING.  I only wish it had been the sunny day I had planned on--the pictures would have been way more beautiful.

They are fabulous pics mos! (I cleaned my laptop screen in their honour, and it was totally worth it!)

thanks, everyone, for the kind words!  it was soooo fun.  and peacocks--you can get a larger one of that at flickr, and if you want a huge one, I can send it to you.

instead of more beautiful ruins, how about some beautiful neon?  I'm on rather a mission to convince myself there is so still good neon in NYC (also mapping it out), since so many favorites have disappeared over the years.  set here (with more to come).

Hey, the Subway Inn sign! I was just saying in another thread how that's one of the only halfway decent bars in that part of town.

good spotting!  it's a bit scaffolded at the moment--I have to go back later to get better pix.  there are a couple of old man bars further east I don't mind, but yeah--there's not a lot going on in that area.  and right now it is tourist hell--I nearly got trampled trying to take photos of that and Radio City.

mos good WORK! I'll ask around about where they've got the hottest neon signs but if you need tips on ruins or cool-looking places on the Hudson I know some things. The Yonkers Power Station is pretty much the boss of both those categories, but Bannerman's Island makes a very strong challenge... It'squite a bit further upriver than Yonkers, of course.

Awesome, MOS!

Iggy/mos:

A friend of mine has been to Bannerman's Island.  Or is going there.  I forget.

That friend and I have done a number of UE expeditions around Boston and NYC.  Here's one that I didn't go on, because the pictures are wicked nice:

oh, yeah, I totally want to make it to Banerman's Island.  and jm, the bridge looks amazing, though I might have a heart attack if a train actually came.

As an enthusiast or as a freaky place? It's just for looks... I didn't know it was there at all until I passed it on a train once, and that was some kind of crazy surprise.

These are the NYC UE trips I went on with that dude (while I'm posting these pictures):

The Greenpoint Terminal warehouse, which was later burnt down, either by a homeless person starting a fire (unlikely), or the owner, in order to prevent it from being named a landmark (likely).

The Red Hook Sugar Refinery Complex, which is now torn down.

Sedgwick Ave. Station—which connected the Jerome Ave line to the 9th Ave. El—tucked away neatly in the Bronx.
