This iteration of the video game thread starts off with a bit of a bummer (in the lead up of a week of WTF as Duke Nukem Forever actually gets shipped in a few days) as one of the oldest developers around, Bizarre Creations, closed their doors. They're not one of my favourites, though racing-game afficianados tend to have very nice things to say about them, but when the studio was shut down they released this video retrospective of their recent work. I found it strangely but genuinely touching. It shows a real affection and care for the work they've been doing. So long guys, sad to see you go, hope you land on your feet.

what? DNF is actually shipping?  When did this happen? Damn I have not been paying attention to videogame news I guess

Speaking of fucked up ship dates, when I preordered Gears of War 3 for my brother as a Christmas present, and for myself using Christmas money, the ship date was April.  Now it's September.  Thanks, JERKS

DNF is dropping May 3rd for you guys, May 6th for the rest of us. I seem to be jumping the gun a bit -- preview builds are going out to the press now, and everybody is talking about how weird a throwback the game is, and how bizarre it is that it's actually going to ship. Some of us will believe that when we see it.

As someone who adores anything involving zombies even I've been feeling a little burnt out by the genre in recent times. This actually got me excited about a zombie video game though.

Damn, because I preordered it along with Killzone 2, but it was so I could get the $40 video game credit! So I can use that to get some reef sandals! I'mma genius.

Well, I mean, the concept of the game is only mildly annoying, in a way that's par for the course with the Wii, but that fucking video really pushes it into I-want-gouge-my-eyes-out territory.

So, anyone up for some Killzone 3 multiplayer? I've got my groove boots on, my extendable finger tips, my trophy case hat, and I'm ready to zone in for the kill. I need to eat blood from my space rifle, or whatever. I think Ignatius, ah pook, and alistair, have em. GUYS, let's get in there, and fuck shit up! I also have Killzone 2.

You know what's actually quite a good game? Mirror's Edge. Parkour is one of the sillier hobbies in existence but it makes for an interesting game mechanic. I really like running around sliding/wall-running/jumping from building to building. The combat scenes are terrible and it's far to linear in structure but if they can make a second one in more of a sandbox style they would be onto something quite special.

parkour isn't a silly hobby, it's an excellent way to exercise and also incorporates a whole bunch of clowning around. what's not to like?

ME is linear in structure but if you get into it enough to attempt speed running a few levels you'll find a surprising number of alternate routes around/through areas and obstacles. innovative use of the limited controls and trial-and-error experimentation are rewarded.

you hardly ever have to fight/disarm anyone in that game, maybe four/five times at most, and if you have to do it more often then you're not moving fast enough. i know that doesn't help make it more enjoyable the first time around but really it's a short game that's designed to be played over and over again (i've done it start to finish in about 2 hours and my "perfect" runs for each individual chapter add up to far less than that, even).

the time trials are amazing, too.

and yeah, just the feeling of the running and jumping and the look and feel of it all is fantastic.

oh man, that's hard. flamelurker is a monster. the bit after him is well worth it, though. go in there after you beat him (maybe go spend your souls first, just in case!). -i think you will find it highly worth it.

There are bits in the corners where flamelurker can't really get at you, or you can stay at a distance and use soul arrow/poison cloud, etc. i like using my winged spear and a big shield, though - just get in there and roll out of the way of his attacks and jab from behind the shield. he don't like it up 'im, no sirree. i actually play keepaway with a bunch of the bosses but some of them i think just call for a proper fight, you know?

i would offer to come help but we are on different servers :-(
