Babies sometimes like to wake up full of smiles and then say all the words they know, such as purple and elbow and niao-niao (bird) and biyah (come here).

That is awesome.

When my first baby was a baby, she also made up her own word for her dummy, which she decided was 'nia'.

The thing I really loved was how she would sometimes go to sleep at night, mumbling over and over to herself all the new words she had learned that day.

Our store has a mascot baby.  There's an older lady who works with us who is just one of those people who is a genuine pleasure to be around at all times, and he's her first grandchild.  I'm not much of one for babies (I really try, but I just don't get excited about them), but this baby is the cutest, sweetest little dude in the world!  He's like a tiny grown-up.

Room mate bought a PS3.  Rap Star is a ridiculous and entertaining game.

Iris heard a mourning dove this afternoon, which she thought was an owl.

She wrote this song:

An early owl, an early owl
Catching its food in the wind

(repeat)

I thought so too, until she demanded K and I sing it the whole ride home.  Confused

How old is yours, Bernard?

Usually I'd agree, but the last 2 weeks have been grim. You know those jealous tantrums of the older sibling? They're here.

Ah yes. I know _of_ them at least (there's 7 years between my boys, so not really applicable) I have friends who have kids with a similar age gap. Not an easy time for any of you.

Erik has been using the word "actually" a lot lately and it's quite cute. Also his big brother is learning French at school and is trying to teach him to say "Je m'appelle Erik" with limited success..

Anne went through that "actually" phrase as well, I remember. Every sentence ended in it, whether appropriate or not.

I still say it all the time and have to edit it out of everything I type. It's cute in kids, though!

I request video of this when it happens!

My daughter is 16 months, so she can answer questions (what do pandas eat?) correctly (bamboo!) but without really understanding either question or answer. There's a real burst happening, I think, because her ordinarily coherent night-waking requests (mama, boob) are a little fragmented (wait, mama, bed, up, down, pau-pau [pick me up], water, gong-gong [grandpa]) until she comes to a bit and it settles down (mama, boob, boob, boob).

How old are Iris and Unnamed Sibling?

When her sister was a bit older and learning a load of capital cities, Grace, then only 2 years old or so, picked up on a couple.

As a result, I used to enjoy surprising friends and visitors with the following quick-fire exchange:

Me: Hey Grace, what's the capital of Madagascar?
Grace: Antananarivo!

I'll work on it B ;-)

E was kind of slow to talk (he only had a handful of words at 2) and he didn't do the whole 'practising random words' thing so much. I think his brother did though. Yesterday's word was "trapezoidal" which his dad taught him, to describe the shape of the seat of a chair, but he's probably forgotten it by now. He also uses "beverage" and "vehicle". Again, his wanky dad is to blame.

Iris just turned 4, and Petra is 2 months tomorrow. She's the easiest baby imaginable - already sleeping through the night! - but this effect she has on Iris sort of cancels that out.

At least Iris isn't taking it out on Petra. It's just K and I on the blacklist.

I weep. My kid is still not sleeping through the night, nor indeed showing any signs whatsoever of starting to sleep longer. She's got bicuspids (I think -- it's a tiny mouth, they could be molars) in already. Hopefully she'll start sleeping through before puberty or I may break down and CIO.

Well, if it's any consolation - and it probably isn't - Iris didn't sleep through the night her whole first year, either. Which is why we're kind of shocked about Petra.

It isn't consoling, but I don't begrudge other folks their good sleepers. Enjoy sweet dreams, fishfamily.

Oh yeah, E (32 months) still doesn't sleep through reliably. Sometimes he will though, which is awesome when it happens.
