fuck yeah carl sagan! (that autotune thing that was doing the rounds last year is still one of the best things I can think of in the world) and http://fuckyeahnouns.com/babies (which is actually slightly creepy and pretty much totally matches a dream I had last night with kittens subbed for babies. weird)

Getting ready for my trip to Seattle tomorrow!  So excited!
So excited that I spent all night dreaming about it, except that it kept turning into a trip to somewhere in Greece (I suspected Athens, but even when I was there, I couldn't quite figure it out- maybe a subconscious terror of getting lost while I'm there?).  I just printed out maps and directions to like 20 places.  All packed except underpants, because I'm waiting on more clean ones from the laundry.

A drive in my server died, and I recently had to wipe & rebuild my laptop. Going back through everything, restoring it all from my third copy of my documentary materials -- and I couldn't find the primary audio for two interviews. Shat pants, then found it still on the SD card in the back of a drawer. I am going to have an AWESOME amount of hard liquor and hope my hands stop shaking.

There was a little bit of sun today in Seattle!  It was between patches of clouds and frequent short bursts of drizzling, but still.  Day one: Seattle is pretty awesome.  I rode the monorail to the Space Needle, because you kind of have to, and also it primarily required relaxing rather than walking.  Sat up in the observatory with a locally brewed ale and tried to watch the sunset through the clouds (not much to see for the sunset, but still, it was an amazing view and the beer was tasty).  The monorail ride is pretty neat, and I'm looking forward to going to the Experience Music Project on Monday even more after monorailing through the building.  Mt. Ranier looks awesome.  Pike Place Market tomorrow.
I made myself stay up until 10, but I've been up since 5:30 in GA (which is 2:30 here), so it's sleepytime soon.  I'm torn between wanting to get up early and get going tomorrow and wanting to change my sleep cycle a bit so I'm not horribly exhausted at the show tomorrow night.
Oh, the flight was bitchin' too.  The first part was all clouds, but then there were tons of mountains!  The mountains stopped, and maybe we flew over the Grand Canyon, I'm not positive, but it was a big-ass canyon.  Then there were some even better mountains, starting off with what looked from the air like some serious plateau action, and then going into just crazy mountains.  I'm assuming those were the Rockies.  My western geography skills are pretty weak, sadly enough.

Oh, also there were some great boxes in the Space Needle gift shop that were handmade by a local artist and were gorgeous and amazingly low priced.  I stopped to look at them because they were pretty, then turned one over so i could scoff at the price I couldn't afford and ended up buying one for me and one for my room mate.

Man, wish we could be there.  You should stay there until we get to Oregon in April then come down and hang out.

Consider it done.
Seriously though, it's really great.  I got a ton of great snacks at Pike Place Market, and I found the Zig Zag Cafe for later drink(s) getting.  I'm chilling at my hotel now before the show, snacking on my fresh cheese curds from Beecher's, Raspberry Truffles and Cabernet Cherries from Chukar Cherries and dried fruit and veggies from a stand with a name I didn't catch right by the stand where they throw fish around.  I thought about buying some fish for my room mates, but I didn't want to pay for them to ship it.  Better that I make people come visit with me later.  I'm having a very strong urge to move here someday, though I think two days in to my first visit is a little hasty to make a decision on that.

I also went traveling! Not to Seattle, though—New Orleans, my first time, for an academic conference. It was a pretty exhausting trip, but mostly in a good way: saw a lot of friends, went to a few interesting panels, ate some excellent food (paid for by my mother, as a wedding present), didn't have to wear a winter coat. And my paper presentation went better than I'd expected. Someone told me he was going to cite my paper in a book he is writing! Hey now!

I would take a nap, but, oh, shit, I have to babysit and write a twenty-page paper and respond to all the emails I've been ignoring and...

Never heard of the Fremont Troll before, but that is awesome. My brother was in Seattle during most of January. I'll have to ask him if he ever visited it.

The Fremont Sunday market was pretty great too.  I got an awesome industrial spring that I'm going to turn into a wall decoration (because that's my kind of of souvenir) and a t-shirt from some event in Seattle in '93 (because that's my room mate's kind of souvenir) plus some totally awesome buttons and earrings, and a sweatshirt silk-screened with an elephant on one side and a lion on the other.  It's a pretty bad-ass haul.  Fremont is pretty great.

If you're there in the middle of summer the Fremont Solstice Parade is pretty much the best thing ever.

It's spring break. Iris and I are playing Candy Land on the living room rug. I was 3 spaces to the Candy Castle when she cheated in a major way. Now she's laughing in my face.

This is awesome, right? Grr.
