I thought of this thread today at the Pacific Science Center.

It's a crappy picture of an axolotl!

Before this thread, I had no knowledge of axolotls. When I saw the embroidery I thought, hm, that's odd. It has taken me days to break down and GIS the damn thing, but I just did, and holy shit.

They're cute and they regenerate limbs. They have superpowers.

Plus, they arise from a mysterious underground lake.

Do any of you crafters make your own colognes/perfumes? I feel like that should be up at least one of your alleys.

Nope, I let DKNY handle that department.  The most I've done is a little scent mixing in soaps.

I gave my friend a little distiller once and she made some nice things.  natural scents tend not to last very well, though.

I thought about trying it, but I don't think I'd be good at it. My scent needs are fulfilled by Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab and Tokyomilk.

I want somebody to make an eau de toilette (or whatever) out of Saphir Renovateur shoe conditioner, which apparently smells primarily of turpentine.

If you can't find someone to make a specific dupe, check out Comme de Garcons fragrances. They have a line that features weird, chemically stuff like that, though it won't be cheap.

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab! Doesn't matter what it smells like: wear it for the name.

They have about four billion scents. I have many, because I love smelling things.

What about that site that was talked about some years ago that had scents like "grass". I have no recollection of what it was called though...

Hmm, there's this one: http://www.cbihateperfume.com/
and this one: http://www.demeterfragrance.com/
but I don't think either have a turpentine scent, could be wrong though, haven't looked for one.
By the way it's the Comme des Garcons Series 6 Synthetics that I was thinking of, which include Garage, Tar, Dry Clean, Soda and Skai.

And here's a review of them: http://hypebeast.com/2008/12/comme-des-garcons-series-6-synthetics/

This Black Phoenix site is great! cf, how about this one: BLACK FOREST
This is the captured scent of a cold, moonless night, lost deep within the darkest wood. Haunting and desolate, this scent evokes images of fairy tale tragedy and half-remembered nightmares. Thick, viscous pine with ambergris, black musk, juniper and cypress.

The pine, juniper, and cypress sound like they might give the impression of turpentine without actually being turpentine.

Yeah, it's hard to say exactly, but at least with BPAL you can order $4 samples and not get roped into a whole thing. (Says someone who has like eight full size bottles and 15 samples right now.)

I got a free sample of their "hag" scent recently.  It's sort of oddly buttery.

I think smelling like a christmas tree would be a wonderful, cheer-inducing thing. I have a friend who smells wonderful all the time - she just puts essential oils in all her clothing drawers (usually a vanilla-y one). That, combined with her tendencies towards baking things for you, makes her easily the most sensorily comforting person to be around ever.

I just finished reading The Last Unicorn last night, which means now it's OK to open and try out the set of samples I bought from BPAL that were inspired by the book. They just released the second set yesterday. DAMMIT.

In actual-craft news, the other night I was feeling terrible after watching and reading entirely too much news about natural disasters and shitty bills in congress and other crap and mindlessly started sewing everything in my scrap bin together. Last night I sewed even more together, and cut all the things up into usable rectangles (YES TO ROTARY CUTTERS), and I think I might be able to make something out of it? It will be hideous, but I can't stop thinking about hideous things.
