(this is the worst thread title of all time, continued from here)

Has anyone heard C'mon yet? Am I remiss in not buying it the second it came out or is this me being all breathless and hyperbolic in a bad way again?

I got the pre-order in the mail a few days ago. I was very unsure about it on first listen, but it's grown on me since. It sounds a bit like a relatively unadventurous "recovery" album after the uneven Great Destroyer and the terrible mess that was Drums & Guns, but it's nice. Nels Cline guests on a couple of songs, where he is being awesome as usual, and their kids sing harmonies on the lovely closer!

To be fair, I think there are some excellent songs on both... but Drums & Guns... I could never just get past the uncomfortable, embarrassing teenage angst on songs like "Pretty People", which is probably one of the worst album openers I can think of (in terms of bands that I love, that is) .

I didn't like either of those Low albums much either, although I really liked the song Belarus - I can't remember which album that was from but it's the only song that survived for me.

My opinion of Drums and Guns turned around pretty quickly. It started out as a shoo-in for my yearly top 5, but then didn't even make my top 20 and by that time Bury the Hatchet was the only song I was willing to listen to. That song at least made my end of year mix. If nothing else, that album taught me that Boss once made a handclap pedal. The Great Destroyer was my first Low album and I still like it a lot.

Oh man, but Drums and Guns has one of Low's best songs!  "You May Need A Murderer" makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, that song is so haunting and sinister.  At once a horrible and wonderful song to listen to while standing on a subway platform, just...watching people.

That whole album (with the exception of "Hatchet," which I also love) is really nervy and angry, so I see why people find it repellent, but I really like it.

The Record Store Day Sub Pop sampler also reminded me that I really oughta get that new Twilight Singers album.

Yeah, 'Belarus' is off of Drums & Guns and is pretty unfuckwithable.  I take the BAoH position here, I liked both of those albums.  They're not my favorite Low albums; I have a stronger connection with their earlier music.  Low isn't one of those bands that I feel too strongly about, though.  I don't necessarily return to their work again and again in different contexts.  Sometimes I am in a Low sort of mood, and when that mood strikes, nothing else will quite do the trick.

Just located my misplaced copy of Drums & Guns - this discussion has made me want to give it another try!

And Maaik - I do like "Murderer" a lot - in fact, I remember thinking that the last three or four songs of the record went some way towards redeeming it.

ME TOO
I think that Low works best as a band when they are angry with each other.

NB Low is one of my all-time favorite bands and I love pretty much everything they've done (I could take or leave the Christmas album)

I still haven't listened to C'mon in its entirety, but what I have heard is really good. I was a little bored by some of the songs, but then I saw them played live and they were sort of unlocked for me.

I think Great Destroyer is a fantastic album, maybe one or two songs I'm not fond of, and I pretty much love Drums and Guns front to back, though I prefer the RGC and live versions of "Breaker."

My only big complaint about C'mon is that it has the ugliest album cover in Low's discography.

Hey all you noise-niks and bleep-n-bloopers, have you heard about the new Amon Tobin record? It came out last week. Tobin has always been more of a drum-n-bass sort, but the new one -- titled ISAM -- is basically just abstract processed noise, and it's pretty fucking mindblowing. Getting high praise across the board. Popmatters gave it a 9/10.

I don't know a whole lot about noise as a genre, be it electronic (which this certainly is) or otherwise, but I'd describe this as pretty intense. It's not at all relaxing, like I've found Books and Isolee to be on occasion...this is hardcore noise, but at the same time it's quite beautiful. I've never heard sounds like this on a record before.

I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about. But I know I love Amon Tobin. And I know that what I read about this album had me really worried about whether or not I'd be into it. And the first couple times I listened to it, I wasn't. But this morning I really am, and I'd like to hear some reactions from the LPTJ gallery.

Oh yeah. you can listen to the entire thing for free here: http://soundcloud.com/amon-tobin/sets/isam/

I listened to it on Friday. I guess I should listen to it again, because it just sounded like an Amon Tobin record to me :/

Thanks for reminding me, I had planned on giving it a go, but forgot (although I fear I'll have coldforge's response - I haven't been much into Amon Tobin in the past).

The type of sounds he uses are similar I guess (maybe?), but there's no jazz samples and no breaks. Amon Tobin records are usually all about jazz samples and breaks.

I'm in the 2nd half of it now, and some melody has crept in. Not much, just a little, but it's there. Really digging it.

I do want to listen to it, but it's difficult because I kind of know his dad, and well, it puts me off a bit I suppose.

But I will give it a go - I just can't right now because I'm in the middle of Tim Hecker's recent album, and it would be unthinkable to interrupt such righteous noise.

I'm glad to see the cover art is genitalia-free this time round though.

Bumping this because I mistakenly bumped the old one, which is at 24 pages. Use this one instead.

I'm looking forward to the new Miranda Lambert side project. The Pistol Annies, being her and two other ladies, have an album coming out this month I think. Here's a song.
