The first few tracks on that Big Tobacco album are aces, then it calms down a bit.

Love that Centro-Matic album. "The Execution of Some Sixty-Odd Drummers" is just massive.

I got that new Twilight Singers album this weekend.  I'm still digesting it, but damn if "On the Corner" ain't a slab of straight up greatness.

I can't bear to part with actual cash money for mp3s, because I consider the format worthless. However, I'm looking hard at the CD for $8 from amazon. That's a good price. Or maybe I'll just hold out for the vinyl next month? That said, my feeling from having heard several songs is that it'll be a step down from Fame Monster, and I only have that one on CD. I'm thinking that if I want vinyl I should pick up the Bad Romance 7 inch with the uncensored version of the song (since all of the CD versions are mysteriously censored, even the supposedly-uncensored ones) or something like that. So yeah, right now leaning towards the $8 CD.

Anyway, since last time I posted about the records I've bought, I got a few things:

Devil - Live Entry tape (this is a three-song cassette reissue of a two-song 7 inch released by a blackened-thrash side project of Gehenna--the American hardcore band, not the Scandinavian black metal band. More info about the band, told in Mike Cheese's inimitable psychopathic style, is here. This shit is kvlt as fuck, which is to say, horribly recorded. It sounds ridiculous on my car stereo. I love it.)
Title Fight - Shed LP
The Menzingers - Chamberlain Waits LP (Bought both of these at a show both bands played last night here in Richmond. Would have bought the new Touche Amore LP--they seem from their live set to have gotten significantly better in the last year or so--but I ran outta money.)

I've been buying music regularly again, which is kinda cool. But also kinda financially problematic. Oh well--I'm still spending way more on books, so it's all good, I guess.

God damn it, dude, I wish you'd come to that show. It was so fucking good.

(And bonus! I got an excellent spot despite arriving after the opening band was finished, and I got back home to Athens before midnight.)

Haven't checked it out yet but what I've heard hasn't overly impressed me. I still can't get past the album cover YEEEEEESSSHHHHHHH. Just.... aauuugh the horror!!! Really, why get a CD (or god forbid, vinyl) to look at that... thing? that abomination. But yeah, I'm gonna listen to it though.

Un/censored wha?  Explain please.

(really, that album cover isn't bad. it's top 5 bad. it's up there with the Scorpions' Virgin Killer for serious)

There was a mistake with The Fame Monster that caused all copies to contain the censored version of the music. The only way to get uncensored versions of "Bad Romance," "Monster," and "Dance In The Dark" was to get the singles and play what was listed as the "album version" on those singles. Google "Fame Monster censored" and read dozens of message board threads about this very subject, if you'd like.

Um, yeah, it's an awful-looking cover, but dude: it's Lady Gaga. You bought into this. Nothing about this cover is any more abominable than the default "Lady Gaga" aesthetic.

think the lady gaga cover is hilarious, only the font is irredeemably terrible

also think the new record is way better than the fame monster, though it's a bit too long.

Conversations I have had about songs from the new Lady Gaga without hearing the whole thing:

"why is there a sparkly unicorn there?"
"why is she covered in amniotic fluid?"
"OH MY GOD WHAT IS THAT?"

(from lesbian coworker) "I am going to have to hear this song ["Born This Way"] for the rest of my fucking life."
(from my boss) "Would you like a copy of the new Lady Gaga when I get it?"
(me) "ABSOLUTELY YES PLEASE."

No. Why? Because any good artist can release an album with a bad cover. Behold:

My argument is not the same as jm's, but I also don't see why you'd be surprised. It isn't that Lady Gaga is a bad musician and so her art must also be bad. The point is that Lady Gaga's go-to aesthetic is self-conscious, campy-stupid weirdness. And she pursues it with abandon.

I ain't give a shit about Lady Gaga but

Lady Gaga's go-to aesthetic is self-conscious, campy-stupid weirdness.

Not necessarily a bad thing

And she pursues it with abandon.

Probably a good thing, I mean if you're going to do a thing, do it balls up right?

Surprised? Yes I should be. She's a fucking motorcycle!!! the font, the little "blings" on the chrome. they even photoshopped her arms to be the fork. portrait-portrait-motorcycle... if that's a natural progression of her album covers then i obviously don't know what i'm talking about.

I mean, what you feel her aesthetic is is your perception of it and many people would probably disagree, but I really don't pay much attention what she does besides music. I don't have MTV or E!, I don't watch awards shows and read gossip magazine and all that shit. All I know it that album cover is fucking horrid. But I've decided to do like BAoH and perceive it as merely a hilarity with a bad font. Hahaha, she's a motorcycle  Razz

Not sure if Ig meant to address me here instead of jm, but yes, this is pretty much exactly what I meant.

Those Shocking Shaking Days
A comp of Indonesian 70's Funk, Hard Psyche and Prog. There's some really great stuff on here.

Other records I got this week:
Silver Apples - S/T
Home Blitz - Out Of Phase
Thurston Moore - Demolished Thoughts
Pantha Du Prince - V Versions Of Black Noise
Johann Johannsson - Viroulegu Forsetar
Overnight Lows - Slit Wrists 7"
Home Blitz - Perpetual Night 7"

I'm looking forward to the Thurston Moore record. I've heard good things about it. Produced by Beck. Not sure what effect that'll have.

The only Calexico album I have (besides the split EP with Iron & Wine) is Garden Ruin. It must have been the wrong one to get, 'cause I've had it for quite some time, yet I hardly ever listen to it even though it's pretty decent.
